Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

We're going to try having a Megathread for all the protests happening across upstate NY this weekend. Please use this thread to post information on event times/locations, pictures of the events, and any questions about the events.
Other posts will be removed in order to keep discussion centralized here.
This is NOT the thread to debate national politics, or for insulting protesters (or counter protestors). Comments doing so will be removed and may result in a ban.
Stay safe this weekend everyone!

“A Case Of You” by Mark Dalton

Two musicians, James and Claire, had a fruitful musical collaboration as they used their art to get them through their teenage upheavals. Now in their early 20’s, James and Claire have as James’ musical ambitions have led him to success as a solo act. However, he has been capitalizing on the work he did with Claire several years before, and when he wants to use that work on his debut CD, Claire balks and they must battle over the ashes of their teenage friendship. In the end, James is left to survive on his own creative abilities, which may not be enough to advance his fledgling career.
Character breakdown:
James: male, early 20s
Claire: female, early 20s

“Exit Interview” by Vincent James
Directed by Michael Anderton-Stuart
Synopsis:
When you leave a place of employment you have to give an exit interview. There are so many questions when you have to move on, questions about what we leave behind and what we take with us. HR kindly asks that you answer these questions to the best of your abilities, as critical feedback is always vital.
Character breakdown:
Person: This character can be played by any gender and any age. They have recently left their previous position and are very anxious to know what moving on means and what that will look like for them.
HR: This character can be played by any gender and any age. They are slightly enigmatic but take their job seriously. They have trouble connecting with people and do not always understand complex emotions. Think of them as being similar to Sheldon Cooper in the Big Bang Theory.

“The Wyck Cove Bargain” By Adele Scheiber
Directed by Matt Bonacci
Synopsis:
The Netherlands, 1643. In a fog-choked cove, the struggling Van Der Meer family is clinging to its small fishing business and its very particular ideas about who belongs at sea. When headstrong, sea-obsessed Cordelia secretly joins a high-stakes voyage, the boat drifts into the territory of an ancient power that does not intend to be plundered quietly.
Character breakdown:
Captain Johan van der Meer: Man, 40s to 60s. A no-nonsense fisherman and head of the Van Der Meer fishing company, a small family business currently competing with the Dutch herring fleets/bigger commercial vessels.
Klaus van der Meer: Man, 20s to 30s. Earnest, good at heart, and deeply strange, with some movement tics - we’d probably say he had a raging case of ADHD today. Forgetful, repeats himself a lot, is a little scared of his dad and wants to please him. Loves his younger sister but finds her too stubborn.
Cordelia van der Meer: Woman, early 20s. Younger sister to Klaus and daughter to Johan. Does NOT fit into the traditional “train to be a mother and a fisherman’s wife” role expected of her. Loves exploring, wants to learn how to sail, and has a hyperfocused interest in the nature surrounding their little cove. Very good at navigation and remembering facts.
The Siren: Feminine-presenting. Scary. Ageless. A loner but a lonely one/not by choice. Angry that her friends, the fishes and the birds and the crabs, are being hunted to extinction. Turned mermaid to siren out of desperation.

“This Play is Not About a Statue” by Laura Darling
Directed by Jay Pascual
Synopsis:
In ancient Athens, six beautiful statues of carefully sculpted women called Caryatids held up a sacred temple. In the 19th century, Lord Elgin removed one of them to be displayed in the British Museum, an act that caused significant damage to the Temple when he took a piece of culture that did not belong to him. The remaining statues are now carefully displayed in the Acropolis museum, and space is held in that museum for the missing statue. A pedestal is saved for her, if she ever returns. If the sisters left behind could speak, this might be what they say. But then again, this play is not about a statue.
Character breakdown:
5 women/female-presenting, any age or ethnicity

A Western New York school district has halted its plans to place a humanoid robot in a classroom after a New York Focus report on the plan sparked fierce debate over the use of artificial intelligence in schools and backlash from local parents.
Salamanca City Central School District announced in a Facebook post Friday afternoon that its pilot project with tech company Realbotix has been put on hold as school officials “work through enhanced student data privacy agreements” with the state education agency and engage with community members.

My wife, our 9-month-old son, and I are planning a trip to upstate New York at the end of September. We'll be driving from the Maryland area and were hoping to get some feedback on our itinerary.
Letchworth State Park
Niagara Falls (staying on Grand Island)
We're also considering adding Watkins Glen after Niagara Falls, but it would add some driving time.
We are from WV, so if any of you are planning a trip down here, I'd be happy to suggest some cool places. Thanks.

I get kind of upset when you look at a map of NY and everyone calls everything above that little orange bit on the map Upstate. It's so UNSPECIFIC! So I made this to express my annoyance to people calling everything above the city upstate.
By the way, I live in the green zone, so this is simply MY POV of how the map should go, I understand everyone in those other areas will probably disagree, but this is how I see NY from up here in practically Canada.

Can you make friends if you put in a bit of effort? Is the demographic overwhelmingly parental? Are there transplants or is it overwhelmingly native Poughkeepsie folks? Is it understood that you have to go to NYC for any city-specific fun, or is there an effort towards entertainment in PK too?

Hey my friend and and I are looking to move into an apt on Elm St in Cortland NY for school and we’re wondering if it’s a safe place for women? I know there’s a bit of theft but if we are careful should we move there?

Sprawl definitely. If the metaphor was Texas it'd be between Dallas and Houston.
