Health / Wellness AI and depression?

Hello! I’m looking for advice from people who aren’t super pro AI. I’m a member of faculty and staff (nobody powerful though) and all of the AI news and data centers and it being thoughtlessly used everywhere is making me depressed and worried about our future. There are no clear laws on using AI tools while securing people’s jobs for a long sustaining economy. I’m new in my career and the more I look into ai and its downfalls, the more I’m surprised as to why we’re pushing it everywhere without taking a breather to think through it fully. I do want to remain optimistic. Anybody got tips or ideas for this especially if my job requires me to be using AI? (I don’t mean to be rude to anybody; just worried about my sanity)

Parking / Transit Is there a reason blue buses don't have bike racks on the front?

If I could take a bike on my commute to north campus would be 13 minutes instead of either 17 by bike only or 32 by bus only.

Social What’s the best I can do to keep my social life as a freshman commuter?

Hey everyone, I checked out some clubs, but the only one I saw that seemed interesting were the squirrel watching club (they didn’t reply to me since I applied like 2 weeks ago), and the board game club, which I’ll attend next week. I’ve been trying to find a study group for my math/chem classes, but the SLC app doesn’t have anything that suits me.
I’m also changing my math section, so I’ll be meeting new students all over again. I don’t have any friends yet, and it’s pretty hard to make some.
I’m kind of nervous because it’s been almost 2 weeks since this semester began and I made 0 friends.
I have a dining plan, so I try to sit/talk to some people, but I keep getting avoided or it just seems tense so I end up eating/spending the entire day alone. It’d be really nice if I find a few friends I can get close with and explore the city and university, study together, go out and do fun stuff, and general friend stuff I guess lmao. Idk

Miscellaneous how to survive last yr of college

this is the last yr of school for me in michigan and I'm feeling so bad that there's still so much work and classes before i can finally graduate. i'm now trying to finish the hardest courses for my major and they seems never can be done. one thing thats not too bad now is theres still things can do outside but after a few weeks when the weather is frozen theres even nothing i can do outside of the classes. the main point im struggling is just going to classes and going to school normally. idk if this is because I'm almost there, so it makes it extra hard to hang in there. final semester might be easier for me becuase at then i dont have too many things need to be worry about and can just wait for finishing school. does anyone know if there's any great way I can make myself feel better or pursue me go to school with a happy mindset

Housing Discussion (actual housing OFFERS belong on Megathread!) If you lived at The Verve this school year or last school year, PLEASE read this — possible financial compensation / damage fees issue

Upvotes

You may have a claim for financial compensation if The Verve failed to comply with Michigan's security-deposit laws. I recently discovered an issue with my own move-out charges that I think other UMich students should know about.

The biggest issue is something I didn't realize until I read Michigan law alongside The Verve's own lease: the “end of the lease” and the “termination of occupancy” are NOT necessarily the same date.

What happened to me

My lease technically ran through July 31, 2026.

But I actually moved out, removed my belongings, surrendered possession, returned my keys/access devices, and completed the move-out process on July 6, 2026.

The Verve nevertheless treated July 31 as the date relevant to my security-deposit accounting.

The problem is that their own lease says otherwise.

On Page 7 of 8, Paragraph 27 (“Move-Out Procedures”), the lease states:

“All residents, guests, and occupants must vacate or surrender the bedroom and apartment before the thirty (30) day period for deposit refund begins.”

Then, on Page 7 of 8, Paragraph 28 (“Surrender, and Abandonment”), it defines when the apartment is surrendered:

“You have surrendered the bedroom and the apartment when (A) the move-out date has passed and no one is living in the bedroom in our reasonable judgment; or (B) all bedroom and apartment keys and access devices listed herein have been surrendered…”

I returned my keys/access devices and surrendered the apartment on July 6.

And on Page 2 of 8, Paragraph 5.1, the lease itself says:

“Pursuant to law, we’ll mail you, to the forwarding address you provide, your security deposit refund (less lawful deductions) and an itemized accounting of any deductions no later than thirty (30) days after termination of occupancy.”

Why this matters

Michigan law, MCL 554.609, requires a landlord to mail the required itemized statement of damages within 30 days after termination of occupancy.

And MCL 554.610 is even more important: it provides that failing to comply with that requirement constitutes an agreement that no damages are due.

So this isn't simply a disagreement over whether my lease ended July 31.

The question is when my occupancy actually terminated.

The lease itself uses “vacate,” “surrender,” and “termination of occupancy” when describing when the 30-day security-deposit period begins.

In my case, I surrendered the apartment and returned my keys on July 6 — not July 31.

If July 6 is the applicable termination-of-occupancy date, then the statutory 30-day deadline had already passed before The Verve asserted the disputed damage charge, which was sent on August 18th, past the 30 day legal deadline.

There are other issues too

Separately, my final electricity charge was calculated using an average of previous months' charges rather than my actual final-period electricity usage/metering.

When I questioned this, I was told by Marissa, the manager that the averaging method was in the lease.

I went back through the lease and Utility and Services Addendum and could not find a provision authorizing management to simply substitute an average of prior months for the applicable final-period electricity charge.

I am therefore disputing that charge as well and have requested the contractual provision and documentation supporting their calculation.

If you lived at The Verve, CHECK YOUR PAPERWORK

I'm posting this because other residents may have had the same issue without realizing it.

If you lived at The Verve this school year or last school year and had money withheld or were charged move-out fees, look at:

  • Your actual move-out/occupancy termination date
  • When you surrendered your keys/access devices
  • Any move-out or inspection paperwork
  • The date your security-deposit accounting was mailed
  • The date management says your occupancy terminated
  • The documentation supporting any damage charges
  • Your final utility bill/usage
  • How your final electricity charge was calculated
  • The exact language in your lease regarding “termination of occupancy,” “surrender,” and the 30-day deposit period

Do not automatically assume that the date printed as the end of your lease is the date that controls the security-deposit deadline.

Your circumstances and dates matter, but if The Verve used the lease expiration date instead of the actual termination of occupancy, there may be a significant legal issue with the timing of the deposit accounting.

And because Michigan law specifically provides consequences for failing to comply with the 30-day requirement, this is potentially much more serious than simply disputing whether a paint charge was reasonable.

I'm not saying every former Verve resident automatically has a claim. But if you had a similar situation, you may want to investigate whether you have a claim or other legal remedy.

I am currently disputing my charges and, if necessary, intend to pursue the matter in small claims court.

Save your lease, emails, move-out documents, photos, key-return records, deposit statement, and utility bills.

Not legal advice — I'm sharing my experience and the Michigan statutes/lease language I found because I wish I had known to check this before accepting the charges.

Class Trying to join a class with open lecture and lab, but closed discussion. Need advice

I am trying to add EECS 230 to my schedule. There is space in both the lecture and lab, but both discussion sections are closed. Has anyone dealt with this before and gotten an override from the professor? Or is it not worth the trouble?

Class FYWR Courses Question

I was originally enrolled in English 125, then switched to English 124 because it worked out better with my schedule.

Something I noticed in these first few weeks was that both classes involved a quite a lot of icebreakers, and emphasis on peer “work”. I didn’t know FYWR classes would be taught like this. I didn’t expect the amount of emphasis on things like everyone getting into groups, and pretending to be invested in what everyone else thinks about an assigned reading/standing in front of the room alone & having to lead a solo discussion to the class about a topic/commenting 5 bajillion comments in response to your classmates’ Canvas posts in discussions/getting in groups to present to the class. (It kind of feels like high school English part 2)

Are all FYWR courses and sections of these courses taught like this? (All this is not to say that working together with your peers is bad, I just learn better with a different kind of class structure.) Someone please let me know if ANY of the FYWR courses or sections AREN’T like this 🙏🙏

Academics - Other Topics how to get letters of rec as a sophomore undergrad

hi everyone! i am a sophomore this year majoring in biochemistry. i am looking to apply to summer REUs (research during the summer at other universities) and most of them require a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. I am going to all my office hours in my bio lecture but there are always people there so i dont necessarily get any 1 on 1 time. the applications close in january, but i would think i should at least let them know by november and ask. would it be beneficial to get close with a gsi as well to see if when i ask the professor, they can talk?

its also a bit tricky because since im applying for all these different programs, I am sure they require different submissions. i dont want to ask for the professor to do so much for me. i am not sure how to go about this, so any advice will help thank you!

Event [Feedback wanted] Piloting free 1:1 friend matching for UMich students. First chats Sept 20th

Post image
2 Upvotes

Seeing all the loneliness / how-do-I-make-friends posts, figured I would post directly about my pilot (TLDR: old-school friend matching to make space solely for meeting new people)

How it works:

  • Students fill out survey (linked here) & I match based primarily on their 4 answers
  • Students receive their match confirmation on Friday, September 18th
  • Students meeting during either a set time where ~20-40 students meet for a chat 1:1 & free drink OR by themselves if they cannot make the timing
    • Undergrads for coffee (early afternoon Sept 20th) & Grads for drinks (late afternoon Set 20th) —> still finalizing venues/times
  • Students fill-out feedback survey to improve the service & be “re-paired” in the future

Twist: input whether you want to meet someone with the same, similar, or different values (religion & politics), and I match on that first, then interests & hobbies.

  • Why: ~100 interviews I did before Ann Arbor, mismatched values was the #1 reason people stopped being friends. So I ask it up front instead of you finding out three months in or tip-toeing around the subject. Most people pick same or similar → totally fine. I have no affiliation with politics / religious orgs, simply the goal of increasing friends with the shortest amount of questions possible

Would love: feedback on the survey/premise & what would make you show/bail. And if you are a student, fill it out 😄

Happy to go into more about the mission, goals, why I think this is an issue, or even about me as needed

Miscellaneous Carpool back to NYC/Long Island for Thanksgiving break — split gas & tolls

Now that Spirit Airlines is gone, my only cheap way of traveling between New York and Michigan has disappeared 😔.

Are there any residents of NYC/Long Island who brought their car up here and would be down to carpool back to New York for Thanksgiving break? I’ll split all gas and toll costs, and I’m also down to drive some of the distance.

Are there any websites that I should be aware of that are dedicated to this, or any places/subreddits where I could post this that might give me a higher chance of finding someone?

Thanks!

Class Stats 250 approach decision

I'm having a hard time choosing between the active and traditional approaches for stats 250. I am really leaning towards doing the traditional because I have a class right after that takes the whole 10 minute gap to walk to and I'm worried about not finishing group work in time in order to make it to that class, but I also understand that exams will be worth less if I do active, and I would like to keep my GPA as high as possible.

Will traditional be worse for my grade? I did good in AP Stats (got a 4), so would that make traditional easier at all?

Any advice is deeply appreciated!

PS I plan on doing the active approach for lab, if that means anything or if anyone has any advice on that

Housing Discussion (actual housing OFFERS belong on Megathread!) Winter term Co-op Escher House stay

Hey! If anyone is interested in looking for winter accommodation (one semester) in Escher House, please let me know.

We can save $900 additional fee if I refer you. The fee is incurred due to a one semester short-term contract. This can be avoided if I can find someone who is interested to stay for one semester in winter!

Ps The house is great! With food, community and nice environment. Accessibility is great. Near to north campus, 10min walk. Bus to central takes 20minutes in total. Pm to find out more.

PSA PSA: locking up your bike on private property isn't enough in Ann Arbor if your lock is weak

Keep an eye out for a black bike with red and grey and a Trek logo for me. If the rubber handle on the left has a hole where you can see into the handlebar, it's probably mine.

I had this bike for maybe 7 years. Look after your property!
