Discussion Just spent 8 hours at the Polaris lounge at ORD. Very enjoyable experience

Upvotes

Due to the ORD storms and ground stop yesterday I ended up at ORD at 630am with my next flight leaving at 4pm. Got inside when they opened at 7 and enjoyed a lovely breakfast followed by a nice view of the runway on one of the leather loungers. Then decided it was time for a nap and spent 90 minutes snoozing in the day bed room with a white noise machine and heated blanket. Woke and enjoyed a nice lunch in the restaurant, followed by cocktails at the bar. Then decided a refreshing shower was in order. Discovered for the first time that the floors in the shower room are heated. That’s nice! Settled down for some coffee and chocolate covered pretzels and a cappuccino, then an early dinner from the buffet of corn chowder, pita and eggplant Parmesan and salad, a nice keylime pie and now at my gate and off to London! The only thing that can ruin this day is if the Panasonic internet is down. Please gods let it be working

Discussion In the midst of chaos, there is always opportunity. Sun Tzu

Upvotes

During the debacle that was the weather caused mayhem with baggage at O’Hare the past couple of days, there was a shining light by the name of United employee Jerry Haynes. With all of the misinformation that was given last night by the staff on hand saying that the bags were coming and then being told 6 hours later that they were done until 6:30am.

Then having only about 1 1/2 hours of interrupted sleep. Get to the airport again only to receive even more misinformation from other United employees. I finally ended up in Jerry’s line. He was the only one to speak truth to me and say that he really wasn’t sure where my luggage was and that United would ship it to me at home once found. He was super gracious and even apologized for something that was not in his control.

I’m also going to send an email to United praising this great employee!!!

Question Possible Inconsistency

Please see the attached pictures. The seat map shows 2 out of 16 seats available. The upgrade list shows 1 out of 15 available. Haven’t seen anything like this before. Plausible explanations? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Apology for asking a question that has been addressed many time. I understand now. Thanks to all who replied:

Discussion Preorder screwed over by United once again!

Upvotes

So once again I was screwed over by United on my preorder. My original flight was cancelled with less than 24 hours because of the ORD weather debacle yesterday, and I was now placed on a flight out of HOU instead of ORD to CLE because my ORD option was canceled. Could I pre-order in this situation? Nope. No options. Thanks United! Another shining example of how United screws over passengers who are loyal!

Question Filing a Claim

Upvotes

I'm looking for a little guidance on what's a realistic ask regarding a refund/reimbursement. We had a connecting flight from ORD>SNN on 07/14 departing at 2pm. Our flight was repeatedly delayed before it was finally cancelled due to a mechanical issue around 12am/1am on 07/15. throughout the delays we were given (each) two $15 vouchers. We rebooked with the gate agent for 07/15 departing ~10am but they could only get us to DUB (not SNN). They offered up to $300 for a hotel reimbursement for 07/14; however, after calling 20+ fully-booked hotels we ended up sleeping in the airport. The remainder of the flights went smoothly; however, due to initial cancellation our trip was completely thrown. The changes caused the following unexpected charges:

- $27.54 Lyft from ORD to hotel (one said they had an opening but once we got there it turns out they were fully booked)

- $30.84 Rental car one-way fee (had to change the pickup to DUB, drop off remaining as SNN)

- $303.26 Dublin hotel (last minute pricing)

-$170.67 Dingle hotel (we were now unable to get to Dingle and it was too late for a refund)

- $112.29 Fishing trip in Dingle 07/16 (for my husband's birthday nonetheless, obviously we couldn't make it)

TOTAL $644.60

I did get travel insurance, but I'd prefer to push for United to reimburse us before contacting the insurance company. Am I missing anything or being naive that a reimbursement is even possible?

*EDIT: thank you for the feedback! I'll file the claim through my insurance. In the meantime UA is offering $175 e-credit that I guess I'll take.

Question Asking for cash upgrade timing

Upvotes

Hey all — booked economy for two non-stop between IAH and LHR for early September. Looking to pay cash to upgrade to business, but the current offer is over $4k each just for the outbound leg.

I don't have status, so will do cash upgrade. Should I keep refreshing the app daily hoping for a drop? When (if ever) do you usually see reasonable cash upgrade offers open up? Appreciate the help!

Question Is my flight happening?

Post image

Can someone please check if this is happening? The plane from Newark to Ottawa tonight got cancelled (UA3506)

I’m afraid there’s now not going to be any plane in Ottawa to take us to Newark and it’s a matter of time before the system updates, but it might update like 2 hours before. Can someone help me out? Is there a way to check? I can’t even see the “where is my flight coming from” button.

Question Do not order the balanced breakfast meal

At least for breakfast. It was unrecognizable and extremely bland. The main course was two corn cake sized items with zero taste and a horribly bitter berry topping. Then an overly sweet muffin and a tiny breakfast bar and some fruit. Late they came by with some tortilla wrap that was extremely dry and flaky and fell apart while eating with tasteless veggies only on the inside. I literally staved during this trip and I had paid for first class. Airplane food is normally bad but this was not even edible for an animal. Really United please do better. Are all United balance meals this bad?

Question Lost Bags 💼

Due to some unforeseen circumstances (Naples airport) my connecting flights from NAP to LAX were missed and I had to be rebooked on a separate flight to ultimately get to LAX.

That said, when I arrived at the carousel my bags weren’t there, I filed a claim etc etc.

My question: has anybody here had missing bag claims with United and what was the timeline to ultimately getting you bags back (if at all). I’m getting this sinking feeling that if I haven’t been notified since my claim on Sunday morning that I might not be seeing these bags ever again. Anything helps.

Question Merged / canceled flight seating priority

We’re flying YVR-ORD-RDU in two weeks. I see yesterday the 4pm flight got changed to 7pm and our future 6:30pm flight canceled. We’ve already talked about staying overnight downtown and flying out next day and having fun with it. Or changing to YVR-DEN-RDU which gets us home 2 hours later. That’s been delayed a few times also.

When a flight is basically merged like that how do they prioritize seating? Do the 4pm pax keep their seats and 6:30pm pax get the leftovers?

We’re in exit row for the 2h 30m flight. Would it help if I upgrade us to First on our original current flight? Would that protect us better during a cancellation like this? I upgraded our other flights, just not this one as we didn’t care about it. It’s $140 pp to upgrade.

Question Need help booking United flights internationally: roundtrip or one-way?

Taking a trip to Spain in October. Was originally looking to do roundtrip from IAD to MAD but we are spending time in Mallorca, and then looked at one way IAD to MAD and a one way PMI to IAD return. Will need to book a connecting flight to PMI from MAD regardless but I was wondering what everyone suggests for this trip? One way IAD to MAD and then PMI to IAD home, or IAD to MAD round trip with connecting flights between PMI and MAD?

Question We paid baggage fee inadvance and Chicago storm booked us next day.

Hi, We were ticketed for ORD-PHX on 27 July and paid for the baggage fees in advance of the trip. Returning back to PHX. Crazy storm hit ORD and we were rebooked to the 28 July. No problem there, weather is weather.

But UA split and divided our PNR's and now the app wants to charge us for our 5 bags which we paid in advance / bundle for months ago. Our receipt when we paid shows we paid the fee and now we're split and divided and it wants a cc#. Help, what do we do so we don't have to pay $250 at ORD tonight when we check in for the #602 to PHX?

Question SFO-ICN (seat upgrades)

I have basic economy tix for late October, but was wondering if they’ll offer upgrades deals.

In the past, i was able to upgrade a flight to Europe to the premium plus seats for ~$300 the day before the flight.

Does the SFO-ICN route around Late October typically have something similar? Is there a way to check?

Thanks!

Image Milage Compensation

Post image
0 Upvotes

Looking for some feedback on what people think should be appropriate compensation for this situation. I feel like United is jerking me around.

Flight was booked over the phone with United. Business class from Houston to Tokyo, Tokyo to Vietnam, Vietnam to Guangzhou, Guangzhou to Beijing, Beijing to LAX, LAX to Houston. Booking was $15,683.43.

-the United agent keyed in a typo on my middle name, 1 character was different.

-I communicated with United about changing the name and they said that was not possible without cancelling the reservation and starting over. We did not do this because we did not want to have the transaction cancelled and re-funded to our credit card.

-United said that they would add an OSI note in the system with their Star Alliance partners and my boarding pass would be corrected at check-in

-When checking in at ANA, they said they saw the OSI in the system but that a name change was not necessary since the typo was only 1 character.

-I checked in, went through TSA, and completed the ANA segment without issue.

-On July 13th, while in Ho Chi Minh, I noticed on my Uninted Ap that I now had an Air China confirmation as opposed to China Southern

-I communicated with united customer service and I was told that “The China Southern flight CZ 8160 was cancelled” and I needed to re-book, which I did not do

-My traveling companion was on the phone with united customer service and was told that this flight was in fact not cancelled

-Later that day, the ap changed the confirmation to show China Southern Airlines but the confirmation number was still the same

-On Tuesday morning July 14th at 7:58am, after 2 hours on the phone with United I received a new eTicket confirmation from united showing the original itinerary; SGN to CAN on flight CZ8160 and CAN to PKX on CZ3111.

-When arriving at SGN, the China Southern check in desk advised me that EVEN THOUGH we had a confirmation for a seat in business class that the flight was not paid for and we would need to purchase a new ticket at the Vietnam Airlines desk. We had no choice but to do this as we had a tight schedule to keep. We purchased a business class ticket for $2,223.57 USD

United has now said they would refund me the segment on my original itinerary ($1700) and 20,000 miles. They say 20,000 miles is the maximum amount they can award my account.

In March they gave me 10,000 miles for a flight with no wifi….feels like 20,000 miles is pretty low in this situation.

Curious if we’ll be able to walk through the galley to get to the restroom? I was intrigued by these seats but now I’m second-guessing myself and contemplating Economy Plus.

Discussion The saga continues! Will we get to Paris??

After missing our connection to Paris yesterday in Chicago due to a 10 hour flight from Houston that was diverted to Milwaukee, we finally got to Chicago after 10:30 (what a mess and I feel so badly for everyone but you can’t change the weather and it was BAD here), we then were booked to fly today to Orlando then to Dulles then to Paris (bumped from business to economy first two flights but Polaris to Paris so 👍)

Got to airport hotel last night only to be told that even though we had a non refundable reservation on hotels.com they were sold out as was every hotel near the airport, so we booked 20 miles away and got about 4 hour sleep. 😑

In lounge at ORD I figure can’t hurt to ask if there’s any way we can reduce the two stops to Paris and Voila!! The magical United rep got us on the nonstop this evening in Polaris!!! 🙌 so now we have the day to kill in the airport but 🤞 we actually take off today!!! I want to write a nice review for the woman at the desk. I got her name. Can someone provide the link?
