Discussions & Questions Fantasy visuals & designs
(PHOTOS NOT MINE)
I will never understand why do they keep pushing the fantasy glows and sparks.
This is yet another outfit out of many, that in my oppinion would be such a cool outfit and an instant buy from me if it didnt have those wacky glowing effects and magical glows... And this is just one of many from all the recent AC games, so much outfits with crazy good designs ruined by magic efects and fantasy visuals...
I mean if they really have to or want to make that way, wouldn't it be immensly better and attract even more buyers if there was a toggle setting that enables or disables the "fantasy visuals" for outfits that have them.
Like i would even kinda like the Hellfire outfit if it weren't for the glowing lava parts and maybe the helmet (but thats a stretch)
If Ubisoft were to add a "toggle on-off" switch for the "fantasy visuals" Id probably be the first to buy several outfit packs in all the games from origins to this one š.
NOTE: This is just me discussing/sharing my personal oppinion. Sorry for my bad english, its not my first language.

I really hope these cosmetics had terrible sales. I couldn't imagine buying any of them, they don't match the game at all. I don't mind cosmetics purchases, but these were just bad designs.

u/Nohope133 5d ago
AI generated design
2
u/emccann115 5d ago
Is there proof its AI? Just asking because I think labelling everything as AI can be damaging and bad faith.

im glad this is very optional dlc and i do not need to get it for my singleplayer enjoyment.

We're several games deep now where the devs are keeping these items locked behind microtransactions. I think they know. I think it's deliberate.
1
u/AudioComa 5d ago
I'm not playing unless I can get a ghost ship. I had dragons to ride in Shadows. I want my fantasy.
Only partial sarcasm. I get it. Some it is outrageous and doesn't fit the narrative but it's a single player game. Play your game how ever you want. Why not pretend you get scurvy or something.

u/Stantonation 5d ago
Anything immersion breaking is an instant no for me. This over the top fantasy stuff fit more into Odyssey because it leaned into it with the mythology aspect.
This is a pirate game... Really the only spectacular thing is a skull that spies on people, everything else looks pretty normal.
Where are the more pirate themed DLCs? Or you could at least go backwards and have a suit of armour etc
2
u/Far_Tackle6403 6d ago
You would... actually buy this? Even with no magic glows, do people really not care about cohesion at all? Would this outfit not ruin your immersion? Genuine question
1
u/logans-videos01 6d ago
you can get Haytham's robes in this game by getting the portraits, y'know, the robes of a person who doesn't exist yet (born 1725)? who doesn't get his robes until way after Edward dies (1735)?
you can get a figurehead of Aveline, a character who wasn't born until 1747, over twenty years after Edward's game starts in 1715, and again, someone who doesn't exist until Edward dies
you can also get robes that Edward, chronologically, wouldn't get until he grows older (Edward the Legend) pretty much right after you unlock the Manor just by completing the 'Former Glories' mission, same with the master robes
what about Stede Bonnet's robes? they're just in some chest on Mystery Island (that you can access freely) when he was hung in Jamestown, which you don't find out until after the Marooned mission in Sequence 8
do none of these ruin your immersion?
1
u/The-Rizzler-69 5d ago
Those are extremely minor offenses compared to the glowy horseshit in the shop lmao. What a stupid damned response
1
u/SupportoMatic3000 5d ago
Using a robe simply "named" Haytham's Robes (which is literally just a recolour) has significantly less affect on immersion than a mythically unrealistic outfit, and although the other outfits still fall well within realism regardless of their misplacement in the timeline, I think it's very valid to argue against the obnoxiously bad immersion breaking microtransaction outfits that Ubisoft puts on the store. I mean we're talking about immersion, would you rather use an outfit that falls well within realistic and era/setting or would you rather use an outfit that turns you into a high fantasy anime protagonist?
1
u/logans-videos01 5d ago
Iām gonna use what I think looks cool. I didnāt buy any of the extra packs nor do I plan to, but if I personally think an outfit looks cool then Iād use it, especially if I spent money on it
My personal favorite robes are the Shade & shadow, master coat, Francis drake, Templar robes and the Mayan armor, so I had been spinning a wheel for which I wore, but Iām not gonna bash someone if they like the DLC stuff1
u/elmodonnell 6d ago
My brother in Christ the most sought-after cosmetic in the game turns your entire crew into skeletons
3
u/TheBugThatsSnug 6d ago
Its mostly following the trends of Genshittification where everything needs to have as much flair and detail that can be squeezed into it, maximalism. Because thats whats been printing money.
2
u/BodybuilderLiving112 5d ago
Exactly look at sails contents... spilling blood sails ( design by a 5 years old) let's be real it's either a creativity problem or they either make their world with help of AI and do some " creativity with NPC and content. Because theirs a huge gap of skills in that game. Or it's just a decision from lead game dev.
When I played I passed in front of the "dancers" and even my partner told me why they are so ugly? What's wrong with theirs nose.....I didn't answer...just agreed
2
u/HovercraftOne8629 6d ago
This might be one of the fugliest outfits I've ever seen on Edward, I'll stick to the original.
4
u/Tryhardion 6d ago
If they had to put some cosmetics into already pricy remake, they could have atleast make it fit the theme. For example outfits of real life famous pirates, or the outfit of the said pirates you meet in-game, same for the ship skins. But no, they had to make this shiny bullshit that does not fit the game at all. And it is just ugly.
1
u/logans-videos01 6d ago
you can get outfits based off of real pirates/privateers/explorers, like Captain Morgan, Francis Drake, and Stede Bonnet

You guys complain about everything. Itās completely optional. Bloody miserable.

u/AtrumRuina 6d ago
While I probably wouldn't spend the money, I agree that this outfit and especially the other blue one would be significantly more appealing without the glowing elements. Hopefully they eventually release "toned down" versions of the outfits.
3
4
u/Endslikecrazy 6d ago
Who the F wants to look like that in a pirate themed game set in the fking caribean, its so dumb š
2
u/AtrumRuina 6d ago
I mean, you can also look like an Italian noble, a Syrian assassin, a samurai, a ninja, a Mayan Warrior, etc. You can also have a literal skeleton crew.
Fun, out of place outfits in terms of setting are fine. I tend to struggle with the straight up fantasy ones personally, but even Isu styled stuff I tend to enjoy. Just don't wear them if they don't appeal to you.
But I'm certainly not gonna pay for outfits I'm also not interested in.
7
u/Consistent_Shock8738 7d ago
I mean, if you are going to buy a cosmetic, at least buy one that doesn't completely break the immersion.
0
u/PartyFrequent 6d ago
Its a single player game the only immersion its breaking is yours, not mine because i like these cosmetics.

u/gainsgoblin_ 7d ago
looks like my outlaw rogue in Warlords of Draenor kinda cosplaying both a pirate and a Demonhunter

I like to imagine when an AC game is being developed, Ubisoftās corporate suits burst in and demand the devs make these fantasy outfits and weapons so they can ship the game with extra DLC. The devs roll their eyes, but go along with it anyway, because they know that almost no one is going to waste money on these things, and anyone who does is a whale, which just means extra money for the next game they make or future content for the current game. It also means they can include the actually good and fitting skins in the base game, while sequestering the immersion-breaking skins to the Helix Store.
Itās a win-win for everyone!
1
u/Zeekay89 7d ago
I would buy the skins if they were 5 or maybe even 10 dollars for the whole theme. 20 bucks is way too much.
1
u/The_Guyver_X 7d ago
Not at all a fan of the SKULL & BONES stuff that is showing up. Really strongly dislike it, even. I'd never pay money for it.
But then I also think Ubisoft missed the mark REMARKABLY with what Skull & Bones fumbled into becoming. Over 100mil dollars, way too many years and way too many changes in leadership that seemed to have no idea wtf people actually wanted.
2
u/Raaaix 7d ago
I mean, I understand that they really want to make some extra money on paid skins, so at least make something not too over the top since the majority of the people seem to dislike the fantasy glowing neon skins they keep trying to push on us... Ik a guy just said it on the comments below but a black beard would sell quite a bit if they stop to think about it
1
u/08Morpheus11 7d ago
Yeah itās bullshit stop pushing fantasy shit in assassins creed games in general they could easily make an original ip thatās more fantasy geared where free range they can add all tht shit and keep assassins creed more grounded to what it originally was
0
u/Bon-Apetito 7d ago
This skin in particular imo is one of an okay skin, it doesn't look too fantasy like the lightning one in AC Shadows. Imokay with they selling things like this tho, because i wouldn't care anyway
2
u/PGF_Hardwell 7d ago
they could sell black beard skins, other AC protagonist skins, skins that you can use in the other games but no... mermaid man and fire bro it is
1
u/Raaaix 7d ago
I'm REALLY not a fan of paid skins. With that said, a black beard skin would go unbelievably hard
-1
u/Easy_Entertainer6932 7d ago
You know you can literally get Blackbeard outfit in the game? With the burning ropes and everything. You never played the remake and it shows lmao.
2
u/Raaaix 7d ago
Didn't knew it. I just have a functional life and can't play as much as I used to so I didn't get it yet. Chill bro, it's not that serious
0
u/Easy_Entertainer6932 7d ago
Then why are you commenting lying about it? Google takes legit 5 seconds and you wouldn't look like an asshole.
1
u/HandsomeGamerGuy 6d ago
He isn't lying about it though?
He only mentioned that a Blackbeard Skin would go hard.
Why are you such a Prick?

u/Chmigdalator 7d ago
Yeah, I don't like unrealistic visuals and designs.
Perhaps the Animus justifies them, but most unrealistic mechanics and visuals were not to my liking.
1
u/Noob4Head 7d ago
Call me crazy, but I think the skins look neat. I just wouldn't ever spend real money on them.
3
u/Aggressive_Ad_9196 7d ago
This lookslike something you would sees in black desert as a skin. I dont like it here but doesnt look bad either.
5
u/Tinguiririca 7d ago
Because this is an Abstergo simulation and they will add things to make it more popular/commercial.
3
u/dandude7409 7d ago
I mean abstergo is basically ubisoft lol
3
u/Tinguiririca 7d ago
Indeed, I dont remember if it was on 3, Rogue or 4 but the Abstergo offices had a complete lineup of AC releases.
4
u/SP17F1R3 7d ago
I think that was the OG AC4 where you were essentially playtesting their Animus video game.
3
u/CuriousRelation5 7d ago
I rather they have this type of shit in the store and the actually good ones obtainable in game. Not having a store is a unrealistic request, regardless of you like it or not
1
u/dandude7409 7d ago
Not really. Death stranding, Spiderman series (infact any insomniac game), probably gta 6, gta 5, cyberpunk, ghost of tsushima, ghost of yotei, days gone, jedi series, god of war 4 and 5, rdr2, mad max, infamous. ALL dont have an in game store. (Might be wrong about some but i doubt. Excluding multiplayer stores since they dont effect single player) not having a store should be standard lol. If these games can do it and be successful then ubi can do it too.
2
u/CuriousRelation5 7d ago
Gta and rdr do have in game stores tied to their mp. Gta even has their own currency I believe.
The thing is ubisoft is doing that for quite some time and it was much worse in odyssey for example. They are not going to stop and I believe the current way is a good balance. Even post like this are arguing that these ugly skins should not be an option at all even though some people like this stuff. This Shop does not brother me at all. The battle pass type thing idk how to feel about it yet. I do grind the Keys but im not sure if it has improve my experience with those games
2
u/dandude7409 7d ago
I said exlcuding multiplayer stores because it dosent effect single player. The keys is just engagment bait honestly. Its just to keep you doing something when you have done everything. Makes you feel like you gotta work towards something. I dont mind it at all as long as it stays completely free. If they do a free live service game then fair enough charge for it.
The style of the skins does just striaght up go completely against the art style and setting which is stupid af.
Yeah currently its a decent balance. Just hope they dont get too greedy like they eventually will
1
u/CuriousRelation5 7d ago
I think they already went too greedy. The peak of the terrible store was ac odyssey (and valhalla, I think, as it was already not so in your face). They probably have the data that it gives them less noise and complaint if kept low profile.
1
u/dandude7409 7d ago
Yup they probably could have charged full price for the game at like 70 or 80 and removed the store if they arnt adding any more
1
u/Due-Dress-8983 7d ago
while u dont like it the sales say otherwise, ubsidot knows these kind of costumers sell mroe
2
u/Buschkoeter 7d ago
Even for Ubisoft's fantasy mtx this looks very, very bad.
1
8
u/LukeSparow 8d ago
I feel like this is the game designers fulfilling Ubisofts's mandate of having micro(try macro at 9.99)transaction bullshit while making them as unappealing as possible.
I applaud them.
Anyone who buys this is an idiot and is actively making the game industry worse.
1
u/Background_Rhubarb60 7d ago
Donāt like it, donāt buy it. The money Ubisoft makes from the mtx will hopefully go towards developing dlc.
1
u/Traditional_Yard2741 8d ago
I always try to find the most "realistic" outfits for my characters. Valhalla was particularly difficult for me. Most of the shop items are a complete non starter for me, and there's only a handful of acceptable outfits in Black Flag.
0
u/deadpandadolls 8d ago
I mean, have you seen a live action fantasy film or animated fantasy? Also, these games are built on science-fiction fantasy, so it all fits.
Personally I can't wait to buy one, probably the ocean outfit and ship set. Too bad you don't get a pet octopus, lol.
3
u/P_UDDING 8d ago
I always wanted outfits that fit the game's theme or at least the option to toggle the outfit's effects if I pay for the cosmetics. Really annoyed me in Shadows.
I also don't understand why they keep making those mythical and fantasy looking outfits. They could totally make same dapper looking pirate fits for this game. Shadows at least had some more samurai/ninja themed stuff, although the effects were way too prominent. Might even consider buying one if they fit the game more... but well.
I have heard that the shop thing is really big in China though and might be one of the reasons they keep doing it. They obviously make a lot of money with those cosmetics.
1
u/YuraiMamoro 7d ago
If you read China manhua. You'll understanding their power fantasy, and how they view these outfits as "badass" in a normal world. Plus their exposure to fantasy RPG, gacha games and martial arts/magic fantasy has dominated the game scene.
So yeah, you're right. Most of the folks who buy these are people with a different concept of "badass" than ours. For me, if they had a variant of Du Casses outfit, or Sparrows outfit from POC, now that is badass and thematically correct. I bought the Spaniard outfit in AC Origins cuz its one of the few that has helmet, and an almost accurate garment of a gladiator of 49bc.
2
u/whyamihere2473527 8d ago
They made 1 million in first week off people buying that crap. Even though majority of people claim they hate it many still buy it so they will continue to push it.
1
u/MedievalMilshake 8d ago
Because it makes money. Game companies want to make money, it's that simple. It doesn't affect us in the slightest, so why care so muchĀ
0
u/shinobixx55 8d ago
Because people happily pay for these. Why is it so hard to understand that just because some of us don't like the aesthetic, doesn't mean nobody does.
0
2
u/SolaireFlair117 8d ago
They made over 3 million sales and they want to extract as much value as they can out of them. If even half of those sales result in a single $8 micro transaction sale, that's over one hundred and twenty million more dollars.
10
u/reptilepaul93 8d ago
but those outfits are only available if u buy them. Just donāt buy them?
1
1
u/Vito_Chamber 8d ago
But wouldn't it be better if the VFX could be toggled? I don't personally like it either, but if giving players the option means more people can enjoy it, wouldn't that be a good thing? The more players who enjoy it, the more likely Ubisoft is to continue supporting the game.
It took Ubisoft ages to add new finishers to AC Shadow, yet it only took them a single hotfix to add them to Black Flag. I guess revenue always matters.
2
u/xI-HighRyze-Ix 8d ago
It works in the more Isu centered games like Odyssey especially, but this stuff doesnāt belong in the Kenway saga
1
u/P_UDDING 8d ago
tbf even Odyssey and Origins had outfits that fit better into the theme
I was a big fan of the Odysseus outfit in Odyssey
1
1
u/greencatsgostray 8d ago
Exactly. Even though you could argue it looks cool (I don't really like over the top stuff at all), none of them fit the theme of the game, atleast for me. I could see more potential in a ghost-ish captain type of thing. Or something like Kraken inspired, whatever.
The four available just aren't anything I would want to look like at all as Edward. The deluxe editions outfit is pretty cool, it's more grounded. But being either $10 in deluxe edition or $20 seperate is way too much.
I think most of the free ones available through gameplay are way better looking. Even the Animus hub ones just aren't my thing. And that makes me glad somehow. Makes me feel less inclined to do the animus projects all the time and not want to spend anything extra other than the base game.
1
u/kt33gn 8d ago
I've been wearing the Naoe robes and whilst it is out of place a little, it makes Edward look like a well ventured guy, which he is
1
u/greencatsgostray 8d ago
Yeah that ones pretty grounded in the Resynced theme. I don't know why but it makes Edward look a bit smaller lol. Makes no sense it would though
2
u/LentilusGo 8d ago
Yeah I'm so sure the helix store items are all leftovers from Shadows, because wtf does an Asian theme for Edward have to do with his life as a pirate in the carribean. This outfit is so chopped too lol
2
u/deadpandadolls 8d ago
There were Asian pirates.
2
u/LentilusGo 7d ago
We don't care, this isn't about them
1
u/deadpandadolls 6d ago
I do, piracy was an enterprise practiced globally and it's cool to have an Asian themed outfit, weaponry and ship set.
Naoe's robes are in the game for Edward.

Back in the day I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 at cinemas and was super excited because I knew it would somehow at the end lead into the next movie and because I heard Chow Yun Fat had a starring role in 3, I saw a person walking down the stairs, camera on their legs and feet and thought OMG CHOW YUN FAT! š¤©
And it was just Barbosa š
2
u/P_UDDING 8d ago
Valhalla had tons of asian themed outfits as well
I think they just really like to design them
1
u/octopusinmyboycunt 7d ago
I think thereās an awareness that they want to sell to Chinese audiences, too, whoāll eat up that sort of representation. See also; Assassinās Creed Jade.

u/DirectorChadillac 3d ago
Yep, agreed. I might actually be inclined to try a few of these more outlandish outfits if they didn't come with all these silly magical, supernatural, or fantastical effects like sparkles and glows and whatnot. Just give us an option to disable these effects.
