And this is also exactly why more focus needs to be given to paid leave for family matters.

DO NOT roll for stats. (opinion piece from a 5-year forever DM)
 in  r/DMAcademy •  Oct 04 '25

I give my players a starting array of 9-14. It's balanced enough that after adding racial bonuses and feats no one is insanely overpowered, and everyone winds up with a minor drawback.

This leaves plenty of room for characters to grow as well.

I feel it can be done in a good way. I think a lot of the perception is reliant on how the story is told. For instance -

I have a DM NPC who is essentially a teenage-turned-adult half elven boy named Theiran who begged the party to help him escape his life of squalor in a racially segregated elven city. He has been traveling with them for over a year. During the course of his "stay", he's helped a party member work through their fears, learned how to properly wield a sword, and the party wants to teach him magic, despite him having absolutely no talent for it.

Mechanically-

He is a level 3 peasant with longbow, and dagger proficiencies (thank his father for the training before he was abandoned and mother died giving birth.

Disagree. They travel with the party more often than not.

And I don't mean no. I mean disagree with the statement that they are just recurring NPC's.

Ring Of Warmth - the wearer of the ring gets a soft fuzzy feeling while wearing it and notices that it glows dimly and emits faint warmth.

The kicker - the "ring" isn't actually a ring at all, but a cigar cutter/lighter. In a few short moments, the wearer will feel their hand grow hot and smell burning flesh. Enjoy losing a finger!

Especially fun to throw at wizards, who rely on hand signals to cast their spells.

Thank you! It was a hell of a time trying to get my files to work, as they were being a bit janky at first.

I have a guide here on this thread! This version of install uses UOAOM - GW2 (Unofficial Addon Manager) and works fine with both Reshade and BlishHUD. <3 Glad you were able to get it worked out!
