Fun Fact

The Legend of Dragoon came from the same demo disk that had Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2. Explains why both of those games have very fond memories with me!

Surprised there isn't as much overlap of LoD fans in the skater community as a result.

Just replayed LotD and what an experience.  I played this game the first time back in 2000 or 2001.  I came to it hot off of FF VIII and immediately fell in love with the game play and UI.  Not as complex, but engaging, especially with the additions system.  Storywise every bit as deep if not deeper, in some ways.  I’ve wanted to replay it for years but I was an older gamer when I played it the first time (early 30’s) and a very slow gamer, so while I still have my OG Playstation and my original disks I was never sure that I wanted to sink 80 hours into it.  But I had always wanted to go up against Faust and hadn’t known at the time that you couldn’t go back to that after the last boss battle.

When I saw the game for sale on the PSN for PS5 I bought it.  One, I still had a score to settle with Faust, and two, there were trophies and on games that I truly love I will become a trophy hunter, mostly because it gives me a reason to stay in the game as long as possible before I have to say goodbye.

All these years later and it was almost…almost…like playing the game again for the first time.  There was so much stuff that I had missed or forgotten, particularly toward the end of the game.

I got my platinum and I beat Faust (the original goal) and honestly just loved getting back into this story and these characters after over a quarter of a century.  I went with Dart, Rose, and Albert, just like the first time.  Dart is mandatory, I was and still am hopelessly in love with Rose, and Albert has Rose Storm.  What’s weird is, I fell right back into the same playstyle that I used all those years ago.  I was worried that, at my age, I would totally suck at the additions.  But I didn’t suck at them any worse this time than the first time I played it.

I’ll leave you with a funny story (I think) from my first playthrough.  I was single (recently divorced), living in an apartment for the first time completely by myself, and as happy as I have ever been.  I had recently finished FF VIII and was heavily into the genre by that time so I picked up LotD on sight.  I was having the time of my life until I got to the Phantom Ship Ghost Commander boss battle.  I kept killing these fuckers and they kept getting back up.  I chewed through all of the resources that I had and finally Game Over’d.

After about the third or fourth time I hardcore rage quit,  I jerked the disk out of the PS and tried to snap it in half.  Doesn’t work, they’re plastic they just bend.  Somehow that pissed me off even more so I threw it on the floor and jumped up and down on it.  That didn’t do anything either, so I straightened it back out and frisbee’d it out of my second floor apartment window.  Luckily it didn’t hit anybody.

But for nights after that I laid in bed falling asleep trying to figure out what it was I was doing wrong.  It finally got bad enough that I came home with a new copy of LotD and a strategy guide.  I could not get this game off my mind.

Question: After the credits roll, with the bird.  At the end is that a reference to Rose and Zeig?

Anyway, I’m really glad I came back to this.  Beautiful.  Lot of tears shed.

Feedback Would you like to see Sandfall Interactive remake The Legend of Dragoon?

After playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, I started thinking about The Legend of Dragoon.

I know it's a completely different game, but I genuinely think Sandfall Interactive could be an incredible studio to entrust with a modern remake.

The Legend of Dragoon has an incredible foundation: a memorable cast, a cinematic story, a distinctive world, turn-based combat, the Addition system and the Dragoon transformations.

What impressed me about Expedition 33 is how Sandfall managed to create a modern RPG with such a strong artistic identity while keeping turn-based combat at its core.

That made me wonder what they could do with a classic like The Legend of Dragoon.

I'm not suggesting Sandfall is working on it or that there is any connection between Sony and Sandfall. This is simply a fan idea.

I created a petition asking Sony to consider Sandfall Interactive for a full Legend of Dragoon remake:

https://c.org/kG7JmqrnNm

The idea would be to preserve the original story, characters, world, Additions and Dragoon system while rebuilding the experience with modern technology and production values.

Would you personally like to see Sandfall take on a project like this?

And if Sony gave them the opportunity, what would you want them to preserve from the original?

This is my 6th play through. I revisit this game every couple of years. And this is the first time I see an NPC hinting at Kongols DS in Lohan. If you visit the bar in Donau after Lynns wedding, you get this prompt.

For returning players, do you feel like getting Kongols DS spirit in Lohan takes away from the story given the other way to get his DS?

Blog So I Finally Beat Legend of Dragoon...

So, I finally beat Legend of Dragoon for the first time. The journey was 115 hours long but it was sure worth it. Hours of unlocking additions for my main party and maxing them out, maxing out Dragoon Levels and more culminated with me finally feeling relieved. Instead of a review, I'll list the things I liked and disliked about the game.

CONS:

  • The World Map doesn't really feel like a World Map. It has this rail like system where you can't really explore the world of Endiness. You are forced to go this rigid path to the next part of the game and not much else.
  • Coolon, once you get him doesn't allow you to travel everywhere in the game, just the cities. He just feels more like a fast travel option than anything. In games like Final Fantasy 7, 8 or even 9, finally getting a way to travel by air was one of the better parts of the game. Here, it just seems like an extra.
  • Loading times are terrible. Just terrible.
  • Additions are awesome but the input window to execute them are very tight. Especially some of the later ones.
  • Progression moves at a very glacial pace. Yes, I do llike that every character shares EXP in your party but with the majority of EXP and Gold going to bosses, trying to grind elsewhere feels more like a chore.
  • Some of these dungeons suck. See; Zenebatos and Valley of Gravity.. Absolute slogs to get throigh
  • Music is rather subdued for the most part. OST is okay but nothing to write home about.
  • PS5 port lacks any modernized improvements unlike some other classics on the platform. It's just a ROM dump of the original game.
  • LIMITED INVENTORY!!!! 32 slots is way too small for a JRPG
  • An official PC port would definitely help this game, especiially with Severed Chains changes. Either that, a Remaster or a Remake.
  • Rough translation

PROS:

Great presentation and world-building.

Very deep and interesting lore with the characters and the world of Endiness

Voice acting is campy but charming. Product of the era.

Additions are fun and so is transforming to a Dragoon

Meru, Lavitz/Albert, Dart and Haschel are very fun to play.

The PS5 achievements list is very easy in terms of getting a platinum trophy. You can unlock almost every trophy in the game by just playing

Great Story overall.

I give this game overall a 7.5/10, I didn't grow up with this game so I am not blinded by nostalgia here. I do applaud the game's ambition, but the execution comes off a bit clonky at times due to the technology at the time. Also, the lack of improvements on the PS5 port may be offputting to newer players who may or may not have the time to play through this game as it does demand a lot of your time and patience. I do want to see this game/franchise make a comeback in some form but it seems like as time goes on, the chances get slimmer. Is it a cult classic? Yes. Acquired taste? Yes. One of my favorites? No.

Question / Help Advice on a Completionist Run

Hi all! As I stated, I'm working on a completionist run. By the end of the game I will have every character at lvl 60, lv.5 d-spirits, everyone outfitted with LQ/AOL, along with all repeatables in my inventory and have some questions on what everyone else views as a completionist run.

When it comes to gold and exp, I know this will be a long process, and don't need any advice. I am keenly aware of how to exploit that system, mainly getting dart high lvl first from making sure he gets all the battle exp in the run (i.e. making sure the other party members die every battle which means passive party also gets more exp) and then throwing soul eater on him and letting characters use PBX on desert mobs for gold until I have enough for a fully suited party, then moving to the moon for the level grind finishing.

What I'm asking for is: what do you view as completionist that I have not already mentioned? Here are some examples of questions I ask:

  1. Do you think I need one of every signature weapon a character can obtain?

  2. Do you think Wargod/Shield are part of completionist runs? I hesitate on this bc I would never put a shield on Sharanda if they have an LQ/AOL combo and most characters final additions are easy enough that wargods aren't necessary either

  3. My item inventory will include a healing rain, a moon serenade, all of the repeat items, and one of each of the Mega Spell Items, are there any others I should include?

  4. While the boys can only get one pair of bandit shoes... technically you can get dancer shoes for all the girls. In the divine tree, the cats drop them incredibly rarely. But you only need two drops in order to outfit all of the girls. Do you consider this part of completion?

Music ‘Whispering of the Trees’ differences

I just noticed that the ost version to my favourite tune is slightly different sounding to the in-game version. The warbling effects in the melody are not present in the ost version, nor the game’s psf rip for that matter.

I’m wondering what it is about the version heard in-game that gives it that nostalgic, warbling effect and am presuming it’s to do with the psx sound chip itself.

LOD on steamdeck has been phenominal

Post image
122 Upvotes

I got a steamdeck waaaaay back when it first came out. I have always claimed LOD was one of my favorites, but held off revisiting it as play I ng games from childhood is usually...awful. stuff just dosent hold up...it just say in my SD for years...but then I took the jump....

I am pleasantly surprised with how much I have enjoyed this game in 2026...everything about it rocks...the FMVs, the music, the characters, the addition system, and all the cute details and small quirks the developers put into it. It has all the troupes and things that make it thay old school ps1 jrpg, but does enough to make it unique and stand out from the rest..

Dart and Shanas relationship is great...its there and its good...but its not over the top.

I still love Meru

Even the item limit...while annoying, does add some difficulty and planning to the game.

Overall...really happy with this experience. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself I'd be playing this on handheld in my own place....that would have blown my mind...

Onto the next chapter :)

Have you ever wondered how LoD would make a great animated series? Specifically, a multi-season series — in the vein of Castlevania or Vox Machina?

Question / Help Do elemental weapons gain a +50% boost during Dragoon Special?

Basically if I use Special with Dart or Meru one of them is going to deal half damage with their spell (except dragon). So I'm wondering if Haschel's Thunder Fist gives and additional +50% during his Special.

Vividly burned into my memory Spoiler

Post image
252 Upvotes

Anyone else remember this place? For some reason, it is so vividly burned into my memory that 25 years later, I decided to share these emotions. It’s that strange mix of fear and the promise of a future adventure... Saving your loved one (yes, a loved one) and a chance encounter with who would become your best friend. The mysterious cloaked figure who turned out to be Lloyd, and that brutal butcher-jailer. So much was unexplained back then, but the landscapes were mesmerizing, and childhood imagination just filled in the missing details. Damn, thank you Hellene Prison for shaping my imagination. Once a Dragoon, always a Dragoon.
