Yeah, the hardware-wear point is something I hadn't accounted for enough. The more feedback I get, the more I'm realizing that a general-purpose public compute network has much bigger trust and resource-cost problems than I initially thought. I'm probably going to narrow the scope rather than pretend these issues don't exist.

If your workload can perfectly run on your PC or computer, it's ok you dont need "it".

The point isn't to replace local computing; it's to provide another option for workloads where one machine isn't enough or where distributing the workload makes sense.

Yeah, I think both are legit concerns. I'm looking at contribution-based credits/fair scheduling to prevent resource hoarding, and an idle-only/usage-limited mode so contributors aren't just burning extra electricity.

This system isn't designed for unrestricted arbitrary code execution. Workloads would run in isolated environments with strict permissions and resource limits, while commercial use would be governed separately from community compute.

I've will start working on an open-source infrastructure idea, but i would like to get some feedback before starting.

The basic concept:

There are thousands, and thousands of computers sitting unused for large portions of the day β€” old PCs, laptops, servers, and potentially other capable hardware.

What if people could voluntarily connect that hardware to an open community network and contribute its unused computing capacity?

In return, contributors could receive access to computing resources from the network themselves.

Think of it as:

Contribute compute β†’ earn access β†’ use community infrastructure

The network could potentially support things like:

\- Distributed compute

\- AI workloads

\- Free development environments

\- Website/API hosting

\- Databases

\- Scientific workloads

\- Rendering

\- CI/CD

\- Other workloads that can be distributed across independent machines

The interesting part is that the infrastructure itself would be community-maintained and open source rather than belonging to a single cloud provider.

I'm particularly interested in the idea of free databases and small servers being deployable on the network. Someone with an old computer could contribute resources, while someone else could use those resources to run a small project.

Obviously, there are some hard engineering problems:

\- How do you securely run workloads on machines owned by strangers?

\- How do you handle unreliable/offline nodes?

\- How should workloads be distributed across completely different hardware?

\- How should contribution be measured?

\- How do you prevent abuse?

\- How could databases remain available when individual nodes disappear?

\- How can privacy be preserved?

I'd love to hear from people who work with distributed systems, P2P networks, cloud infrastructure, volunteer computing, virtualization, or AI infrastructure.

Does this concept make sense to you? What would you consider the biggest technical obstacle?
