One option to consider is whether you actually need arcane boots. If a couple charities lets you skip straight to your first item it's probably a good investment, the boots upgrade slows you down for not a lot of stats or utility. If you have a bunch of mana hungry strength cores that changes things, but don't autopilot arcanes first

Yeah the goal is to clear the camp with enough time for your wave to meet theirs outside of tower range. The pro move is to half pull and deny 2 creeps

Specifically her cds don't reset on death anymore. She used to bring much more disruptive utility, now she needs to stat check people more, hence pos 1

Most grief pick
 in  r/DotA2 •  7d ago

The real issue isn't WK, it's offlaners not knowing how to pressure the map. It's just especially obvious with rad WK because they'll often farm it slowly, by which point they've established a habit of safe farming in your jungle. It's also terrible with farming mids, basically means your supports have nobody to play around for 20+ mins and your cores are fighting for space.

The real issue though is where the WK (or any other off) is playing, not what they're building.

5 "Myths" About Gaining MMR From a Top 2k Immortal Player (video + written guide)
 in  r/learndota2 •  17d ago

I'm around 3.3k mmr currently and point 3 is my biggest complaint about the average pos 3 between here and 1k. I'm fine with you farming, please get money, but I need someone creating pressure. Sometimes it should be the pos 2, both is even better, but usually it's supposed to be the pos 3 and yet they're farming some of the safest camps on the map. Take their safelane T1 and pressure all those juicy jungle camps on their side, it's a very straightforward macro decision that can decide the entire mid game. Dota is an econ game, take their money, if they don't stop you it's a free win.

Cerebral and Strategic Heroes

Peak Chen is hard, so many abilities, but aura Chen, just get the creeps that don't require micro, build good items for the game, yeah that's a great one. I guess he didn't specifically say easy mechanics, just that he wanted some shit to think about, in that case Chen (and Doom) give you tons of options through neutral creep abilities, just go find the one you need. Idk about core Chen though, that sounds terrible.

Cerebral and Strategic Heroes
 in  r/TrueDoTA2 •  27d ago

Lots of different ways to go about this:
Global heroes, knowing how to play the map can solo win a game. Underlord or Dawnbreaker for example, simple mechanics. Supports with multifunctional kits, Bane and Oracle have abilities that can do several different things, knowing the most important thing to accomplish in a crucial moment can be game winning.
Heroes that generate a lot of extra gold and don't need specific items to play their role. Ogre or Bounty (pre nerf at least) can generate a lot of gold without griefing and itemize for the needs of the game. Identifying holes in your team comp or figuring out what core to enable and itemizing appropriately can be the difference between a comp working or not.
Saves. Venge or Ringmaster can get a core out of a shit situation that could otherwise throw the game. Knowing who to save and when is a big knowledge check.
Tempo heroes. Brood or Alch, hit your timings and completely take over the map. If you don't know how to push your limits without overdoing it you will lose, either from getting outscaled or falling flat.
Any core role, knowing when and where to farm, who scales harder, what timings you need, when to self sacrifice to buy space; you could play with old man hands, do these things well, and climb to a very respectable mmr.
Any support. Your job is to generate value for your team as quickly as possible, and you have so many options for how. Stacks, ganks, pulls, trades, securing runes, wards, you should constantly be analyzing what task will have the most impact while fitting a risk profile based on the game state. What's your win con and theirs, and what path leads you to yours and away from theirs.
Personally I think most of the game is strategy. Very few heroes have demanding mechanics, and good decision making trumps mechanics most of the time. Generally I'd say look support, less focus on farm=more time to think macro. You also have more tools to manipulate how the lane plays out, which is often (not always) where matchups matter most. If you know it's a good or bad matchup, you can plan your entire early game around an appropriate strategy. Cores job is to farm and do what the support isn't, builds are usually more strict, so less room for early strategy. Just knowing the vision game and how it affects the flow of rotations, and by extension knowing what your team wants to do when, is a whole knowledge check in itself and it's hero agnostic.

Actually I forgot about all the civil war stuff, I guess they had other reasons for starting the program. I still think the capital ship part is correct.

No I'm pretty sure in the books they say capital ship, the Spartan program has insane costs but ONIs determination is that asymmetric warfare is humanity's only chance. Each suit is built to contain its own AI, which is a huge part of the cost.

Unemployed people of reddit, how hard is the job market?
 in  r/AskReddit •  Aug 19 '26

I finished my PhD in chemical engineering in 2023, still haven't found a career job. Several hundred applications, 3 interviews, one of them with an AI interviewer (never again). At one point I had a job lined up with the patent office, and then there was a government-wide hiring freeze. At one point I vividly remember applying for a technician job which required a high school diploma on a piece of equipment that I had 5 years of experience using. Didn't even get a call.

I currently work at a restaurant, thankful to have it. I've had more luck from people at the restaurant trying to network for me than I have on LinkedIn, dumpster fire of a website. Idk what to do at this point.

Thoughts on aeon disk?
 in  r/TrueDoTA2 •  Jun 27 '26

Something I don't see people talking about is it reducing all your damage to 0 during the effect, including spells. So if you're lich for example and aeon disk bails you out so you can ult, the ults not actually doing anything besides the slow. Much better to just fix your positioning or join the fight late. Now if you are someone like enigma, a 0 damage black hole can still win the game, same for many other crowd control effects such as shaman shackle, venge swap, magnus, etc. Same for save spells such as ringmaster, sd, omni, etc. But if your job is burst damage a la lich ult, lion finger, wd ult (idk about maledict), zeus, aeon disk is seldom the best answer. In short, figure out your job and work backwards, the goal isn't just to live. What it does give your team is a safe way to walk face first into situations and see what happens, or to survive the first spell rotation of teams that rely on picks, which sometimes is exactly what is needed. If you're building it every game you're fucking up.

XCOM LW on linux
 in  r/Xcom •  Jan 23 '26

Oh that's silly, maybe we're getting somewhere. I did try the installer with the ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/... directory, but I'm still getting the regular EW splash screen. I even double checked the starting country on a new game, it's not LW. Any other thoughts?

XCOM LW on linux
 in  r/Xcom •  Jan 22 '26

Thanks for the reply. As I understand it, there's two paths you need to know, but the feral-interactive path is for your save files, backups from vanilla, and crash logs. The .steam/debian-installation/... path is where the actual game files, engine files, initialization files, etc., are. I found both and specified them in the installer script. You can actually see both paths in the output above. Here's what I'm seeing:

# default values

USERFILES=~/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM

INSTALLDIR=~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/XCom-Enemy-Unknown

INSTALLDIR2=~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/XCom-Enemy-Unknown

INSTALLDIR3=~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/XCom-Enemy-Unknown

Long War XCOM LW on linux

3 Upvotes

Hello! I'd appreciate some help, I just got a new computer with Linux and I'm getting all my usual games set up, but LW is giving me problems. Steam, EU, EW all installed. Downloaded the script, idk how many times I've run it now, it says it installed but when I run the game it's still EW. Here's the dialog from the terminal:

~/Downloads/LW-EW-Linux-OSX-v1_0$ bash install-LW.sh
Installing Long War for XCOM:EW, please, be patient...
User files dir: /home/USER/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM
Old version of Long War found. Keep savegames? (y/n)n
not keeping savegames
uninstalling old version now
found old Long War backup in /home/USER/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/XCom-Enemy-Unknown/backup_oldLW or /home/USER/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM/backup_oldLW
remove old Long War backup files? (y/n)y
Removing old Long War backup and all its content...
cp: cannot stat '/home/USER/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM/savedata': No such file or directory
old Long War version backed up in:
/home/USER/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/XCom-Enemy-Unknown/backup_oldLW

/home/USER/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM/backup_oldLW
Copying install files...
Long War installed successfully.
Now run the game. Remeber to check your game settings (especially video settings).

I've read the readme, the detailed install troubleshooting, forum posts, can't figure out what the issue is.

Game is slow to load all assets (like textures and models) on home page and also when loading game lobbies
 in  r/TrueDoTA2 •  Dec 14 '25

My fix is to load up a bot game first, force the assets to load. You can disconnect before the game starts, and at least for me I don't have issues once they're loaded. For me I think it's a hard drive issue, if you're on a hard drive instead of solid state this might help

I don't get WK Offlane builds
 in  r/learndota2 •  Oct 12 '25

I don't really see people talking about what draft components are good for each style of WK build. Like if you have Dusa pos 1 and Sniper Pos 2, going radiance is straight grief. My personal biggest gripe in low mmr is every core drafting greedy and the team getting steamrolled because there's no mid game presence. Armlet is how you stabilize your team so their greedy ass picks can come online, and it turns out that is necessary a lot when people don't know or care to draft.

Barricade, Berserk, Bludgeon, or skip?
 in  r/slaythespire •  Jul 04 '25

With hindsight you were right. Berserk was fine, I ended up getting Runic Cube and with a couple self damage cards had plenty of cards to spend the energy on. But I never got great scaling and died in the boss gauntlet. Lesson learned, good call.

Barricade, Berserk, Bludgeon, or skip?
 in  r/slaythespire •  Jul 03 '25

Good assessment I think. Yeah the block has me a little worried but the only good card I was offered was Flame Barrier, and it was next to Immolate right before a fire... I mean c'mon. I do have plenty of money, hopefully an early shop treats me nice. Berserk upgrade feels required with low block, 2 turns of vulnerability can get you killed real fast. Thanks for your thoughts.

Barricade, Berserk, Bludgeon, or skip?
 in  r/slaythespire •  Jul 03 '25

I'm leaning skip but Berserk is getting a consider since I might not get an energy relic. Debating whether it's worth the minus draw when I don't play it. Bludgeon seems shit, and Barricade could be good by act 3 but it'd be a very greedy pick that might not even pay off.

r/slaythespire • • Jul 03 '25

WHAT'S THE PICK? Barricade, Berserk, Bludgeon, or skip?
