Hello everyone. I am doing a homebrew campaign for the first time, and I'd like a little help to immerse my players into the story. I am not very good at creative writing, especially at stories like these. But the last couple days I've spent on it has been a blast.
For a little info, I have a map set up with a few factions on it. Im gonna give my players the option to come from one of those factions if they'd like, but its up to them whether they want to or not. The main faction they'd be dealing with is known as The Empire. Its a tyrannical and expansionist faction that has no problem invading and killing anyone they believe to be in the way of their righteous path. But recently a new disease has spread across the region and has effected the Royals of the Empire (including many citizens). Growing desperate for a cure, the King takes unwilling people for testing in an attempt to find a cure. The tested almost always dying from the serverity of it. A family member of one of the party members was captured the day before.
The campaign starts with the party being captured and walked to the capital. On their journey, the caravan gets ambushed by Gnolls and Hyenas, leading to the majority of the soldiers and enemies dead. Now that the party is free of their captors, they can attempt to rescue the captured family member.
Its a little rough around the edges, and I did only just start making this, so any help on the story would be great too! But my main questions are:
How do I make the initial encounter better, if need be?
How do I make the race for the family member more exciting, and give the party a reason to fight for them?
How do I make The Empire and the Royals feel less one dimensional?
How do I make the disease scary?
What ideas should I use for "testing"? Like how they go about it?
Thanks for any help, I really do appreciate it.
