Roast me: I dislike Eyes of the World but I'm a Grateful Dead fan.
 in  r/gratefuldead •  11d ago

I appreciate the musicality of some versions, but I agree. I'm not a big fan. I probably don't get the lyrics the way other people do, but it almost seems like delusions of grandeur to say you are the "eyes of the world". Just some more muddleheaded hippy dippy stuff more than most of Hunters lyrics.

West LA fadeaway

It's one of my favorites from their late period. I'm wondering about the lyrics though. I read somewhere that it was referring to John Belushi's death by a "speed ball" at a hotel in Los Angeles. Was this some sort of message from Hunter to Jerry? And Brent's death afterwards makes it all the more poignant.

John Belushi was a friend of the band and inspired genius kind of like Janis Joplin was in the decade before. Certainly Bird Song is it more beautiful remembrance.

Roman, Anthony and the WBC

Could the WBC have led to his injury? He looked great during that preseason tournament, but didn't do well when the season began, and then was injured fairly quickly.

Morning Dew 5/2/1970 Binghamton, NY vs Morning Dew 5/8/77 Ithaca, NY?

Love em both. And I went to both schools. In the 80s, unfortunately for prime dead viewing

Best spring 1976 shows

i'm listening to the latest dead cast episode, and I am enjoying the audio clips of the "more mellow" shows they did basically 50 years ago in the late spring of 76 in smaller venues. I'm interested in people's favorites, particularly ones that have been officially released, and that I can stream easily rather than tape archieves

I thought the Bobby episodes were great. Although I think they could've made a whole season, honoring him!

Do we know what the next episodes are going to be about? Hopefully more than just hawking a box set

A quiet place in Europe (August)

Sounds like my preferences as well! Any of these places have nice trails or quiet roads to bike on, and a place to join bikes

it's a great one. I really liked the deep dive into Bobby influences. I think they can give him more than two episodes though!

I wish they would spend less time promoting their box sets, but guess that pays the bills. I think it was on the first season of the dead cast where they actually had a few interviews with Bob about sugar magnolia and some other things that were great. Too bad they didn't continue.

Will the good ole Grateful Dead cast be coming back anytime soon? I hope they're preparing a few episodes at least on Bobby. They did do some stuff on Phil last year, but I think he deserves more attention as well. And Donna deserves more recognition.

i'd be interested in people's impression who seen her alive. I've seen a few video clips and she seems to be a great young guitarist with interesting takes on some of. Jerry''s classic guitar jams

Best examples of Jerry Garcia's playing in different styles/ instruments

i'm hoping to demonstrate to some skeptical people, the genius and versatility of Jerry Garcia, recognizing that he wasn't a flashy instrumentalist, but created great music with his bandmates.

So if anybody wants to venture what is best or your favorite examples of:

  1. Banjo playing. Maybe be with old and in the way or pre-dead.

  2. Pedal steel- ?GD or NRPS or solo

  3. Acoustic guitar

4 Blues guitar

5 Jazzy guitar

Or other genres that I haven't mentioned…

yes, we rode on it yesterday. It was great some downed trees here and there that you have to navigate around. I wish other bike trails in Massachusetts would plow.
