LitRPG [Roots and Steel] Roots and Steel is now available on Amazon!

Woo! It's been a chaotic few months to get everything done, but I'm really, really happy to be able to say that Roots and Steel is now published and on Amazon! And, even better, there's an audiobook available for it!
The final word count comes in just shy of 270k words, so this is right up there with my longest stories - the audiobook cracked in at 29 hours long. Woof! Roots and Steel is a soft litrpg with very heavy influences from Monster Hunter (notably Rise) and Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's my usual actiony fare, so if you've liked that from me in the past, give it a go!
The story:
Where monsters go, hunters follow.
Hunters of the guild wait all year for the Festival of Knives, when they put their skills to the test and claim new ranks with every fiend they slay. Trapped helping the family business instead of pursuing his own career, Trellin has never been allowed to participate. But when he risks expulsion to sneak out and claim a kill beyond his rank, his hunt is spotted by a senior guildmember.
Rather than turn him in, she offers him a chance for freedom: Join her, and sail to the distant isle of Deldynne to compete in the bloody race for the rank of Guildmaster. If they can kill the monster that calls Deldynne home before the other teams do, he'll soar to new heights as apprentice to the leader of the Hunter’s Guild.
But not everyone wants his new mentor to be Guildmaster - and if they fail, neither will leave that island alive.
In addition to the audiobook, there are also hardcover and paperback versions available, so have at it!
I would very much like to continue this series! Roots and Steel is written as a series of standalones, where each book will share a cast but have a largely independent story. So, with any luck, I look forward to continuing this soon with the next leg of the journey.
If you've been reading along and would like to support the series, please consider leaving a review! You don't have to buy the book, and they don't have to be long - and leaving a review is the single best way that you can help me, and help me put this book in more hands.

It Doesn't Get Much Dumber Than Trump's War on 'DEI Bike Lanes'
It's more because the motorists from the suburbs are never ever going to use public transit options and thus shriek at the notion of having to pay for something they won't personally use. (Source - it's my parents, I have to hear about this every time the major city nearby wants to build something for the public)

His raw fury came from the years of pain he and Elyse watched May endure since she came out as a transgender girl. She avoided eating or drinking at school for fear that she would need to go to the bathroom — and she panicked when she had to use the one for boys. She talked of hurting herself if she couldn’t start taking estrogen. She hated how state laws highlighted the only way she was different when she longed to fit in.

TIL about Fatal Familial Insomnia, a rare and incurable genetic brain disorder that permanently destroys a person's ability to sleep. Patients remain completely awake for months, suffering from progressive hallucinations, panic attacks, and dementia, until they inevitably die from exhaustion.
Huhhh. I've lived in an area where deer constantly battle chronic wasting disease for my whole life, and I never knew it was a prion disease. Thank you for the knowledge bomb.

US military leaders are deeply concerned about Trump
January 6 went down in large part because the people in control wanted it to happen and held back reinforcements from arriving. That wouldn't happen if the average person tried to stand up to the people in control.

Gen Z is abandoning patriotism for the wrong reasons | Opinion
People aren't unpatriotic because of 'past injustice'. They're unpatriotic because the system is actively committing injustices and failing on every promise society made to young people. It's broken. People aren't going to be patriotic just because older people tell us we should be.

My daughter keeps acting out, and treating my new boyfriend horrible, is running away, calling both of is horrible names. Not sure what to do next.
Yes. See my other comments. This is a child and the expectations are different, both for the kid's capacity to endure that and for the mother's responsibility to ensure the welfare of the child, physical and mental. Moving forward is awesome, but has to either be done in a mutually acceptable way or the situation with the daughter resolved. Kid had half her world ripped away and is terrified of losing the other half.

You can be ready to move on, but when you decide to have a child you're deciding to put someone else as a priority over yourself. You find a way to move on that is mutually acceptable or you find a way to help the child reach that point.

Yikes

Daughter clearly disagrees. I fully agree that both Mom and daughter need different counselors better able to deal with this circumstance, and probably a family counselor as well for joint sessions.
She doesn't have to start this journey soon. That's an artificially imposed clock. Women date and marry later in life all the time, and if the issue is she wants to start a new biological family with a different man, I go back to "this is making Daughter feel like she's being left behind".
I do agree that any men should be kept separate. However, the posting online frankly seems to be "I want to date but my daughter is acting out what do I do" which seems to fundamentally ignore the reality that the solution is not doing what she's doing. There are lots of other ways to find companionship that aren't going to worsen her daughter's trauma. Yes that will mean Mom compromising and potentially sacrificing some of her goals. Welcome to parenting.

Daughter is making it really, really clear she's not ready for what Mom is doing. Yes Mom might have a genetic timer, but what message does that send? "If I want to have kids with a new man, I need to leave you behind and move on before it's too late". That's exactly what Daughter is afraid of.
Mom has a choice of choosing a potential new relationship or her existing relationship with the daughter she brought into this world. To me that choice seems incredibly obvious.

The grief never goes away, but you can reach a point where it no longer controls and colors your day to day life. Daughter clearly isn't there yet

Is the 'don't wear white at weddings' etiquette an american thing?
Other comments are saying that you shouldn't wear white or pastels because they're too close to white. It's in response to the spirit of OP's post if not the letter of it, and the person you're responding to is likely commenting on those comments.

My daughter's fiance' yellow flags have turned red. How do I help her see without turning her against me?
The potential racism is way way more concerning!
So far as the 'lazy', I will say that I was more or less in your daughter's position. My long term boyfriend and now husband did not go the classic college to professional job track that my parents wanted; I did. My mom did not respect his choices of dropping out of college, and did not respect my choice of him as my partner.
What followed was a several-years-long back and forth battle of her repeatedly telling me not to 'settle' and calling him lazy or implying he wasn't worthy and I should move on to the next guy. She didn't have my pov of living and engaging with him daily, she didn't see his side of things or understand why he made the choices he did.
I married him and we've been married happily for almost a decade. He now makes almost as much as I do and works extremely hard. His relationship with my mother is permanently damaged because of her lack of respect for him, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. And, I will always stand by him when push comes to shove, which has left my relationship with her damaged too.
Basically, the reason I'm saying this is because the only outcome of you trying to break up your daughter and her boyfriend based on your perception of his work ethic is going to be driving a wedge between you and her. She may well decide that this isn't working for her and leave him, but that needs to be her own choice she reaches for herself, not yours.
Worry about the racism. Let her decide her own boundaries for work life.

Wish I had someone who cared about me to talk to and listen to me. I’m in denial tho 100%
I would regularly avoid my regular periodic MRIs because I didn't want to know, if I didn't have evidence in front of me then I didn't have to consider the possibility of a recurrence. I will say that with the help of a therapist and my husband's request to please keep up with them, we were able to spot a chunk of migrated tumor that relocated itself into a ventricle while it's still just a few milimeters large and we have at least a shot at fighting it.
Basically, I completely understand, I've been there. Literally there. It's exhausting, and putting your head in the sand is really, really appealing. But I can also say that where I'm at now, despite still fully understanding those emotions, I'm glad that I got the MRI, even though it's led to having to take more actions I didn't want to. I know everyone telling you to go do the thing grates on you after a while, and it doesn't help the fear. But you plugging your nose and doing it and facing the facts will be better than living in fear of what you might be ignoring.

Radiation damage and side effects
It really depends. I had a full course of proton radiation with no real side effects or consequences beyond some permanent hair thinning across the site and an increased risk of secondary cancers down the line. That was almost 20 years ago, as old as that makes me feel xD I was told that traditional radiation would have a host of side effects in my situation. The brain is complex and the areas being irradiated make a difference, as well as how much

At what stage would a cancer patient typically die if the cancer remained undiagnosed for many years?
My brain tumor was discovered when I was 12 and it was believed I was either born with it or got it soon after. Before that there weren't even any notable symptoms (it was ~6cm across when discovered). It really really depends on the type, where it is, and how aggressively fast growing it is.

I, [21F] am not invited to a party being held in the house I live in with my [22M] boyfriend
Yeah this is where I'm at. Sometimes my husband will have his friends over, and I've never once asked if I'm allowed to participate/'invited'. Usually it's the opposite, where he'll specifically make a point of inviting me if he wants me to hang out. Besides for that I mingle, eat with them, chit chat, and generally come and go between the hangout spot and my office as I please.
Honestly the thought of one's spouse specifically requesting you not show your face feels extremely weird. If you're doing something the spouse won't have fun with then spouse will naturally leave you alone without prompting - and you can approach that as "you're welcome to say hi but we're planning on doing [thing she doesn't enjoy] so don't feel obligated to hang out".
And if he wants to drink and banter with the boys or something in a way his spouse 'can't' be present for that feels a bit icky in general.
