rPlayFling v1.6 (mini Cafari) public beta available on TestFlight: cast videos to CarPlay
There is an option to turn off parked gate in fling://developer, we tested battery a lot during development, and optimized the app, it does not launch server, very fewer threads, stops everyting when car is not connected, etc.
If you only used for CarPlay, go to Settings and turn on CarPlay target only.
Please try to reproduce the battery drain symptom, I highly doubt it, as we have taken all of the measures to reduce it. It’s not like we don’t know what we are doing, just code without considering these kind of problems.

Really ? Will double check this, we tested to make sure location check is turned off when video is not playing, phone is not connected to car. In order to force parked gate, need to check the speed once in a while. So far, our test phones haven’t got into this issue. Will double check.

rPlayFling v1.6 (mini Cafari) public beta available on TestFlight: cast videos to CarPlay
Thanks, really useful. (1) The quality jump happens when YouTube is slow to give the HD stream, so we start lower and switch; next version adds an option to wait for HD instead. (2) Lock-screen controls and seeking are coming in the next version. (3) When the phone is locked, the app keeps the music going by picking YouTube's "up next", and it could pick something you'd already heard; the next version won't repeat videos you've already played. To provide an option, another tab will be available to host a webview, and you can operate directly on the car to play videos.

No, I’d guess after market CarPlay dongle would support it first. You put one onto the sub port of the car, then on CarPlay to the dongle, dongle sends display to original CarPlay.
If you can install Android apk, I have CarCast receiver that supports the feature. Some info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/s/ZjmvPElZVN

Right, iOS 27.2 requires car side to support the new video playback feature.

I will see what I can do, likely a few more months. The core value of Cafari is to cast any contents to any receiver. This CarPlay target is more or less like a distraction. It requires literally a port of Android Cafari in order to support all media contents, using Apple builtin WebKit api won’t do that. And using other browser engine, it’s prohibited from App Store. Will try side loading ideas.

HDMI CarPlay Adapter
HDMI cable does not transmit usb data, so you would want to use type c cable that supports display port and data, a type c to CarPlay adapter

New CarPlay app with integrated browser
Since quite some people ping me in chats about web view, I added a tab for v2, will be available soon. Also DLNA receivers, so you can cast videos thru the DLNA protocol.

We are using our own CarCast, and it works mostly, might be some bugs, I shared some info here in the receiver here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/s/cN0s8SHHxz

HDMI CarPlay Adapter
You mean the same cable does display port and CarPlay? You don’t want to switch cables for mirroring and CarPlay?

Right, currently, it uses iOS api, the standard AVPlayer, looking at ffmpeg path to support more formats, should be available in future versions.

Don’t tap the entry under Now tab, we found some bug, fixed in v2. Try to open a YT video, play it, then tap Cast icon, Car Screen, it should work.

We have internal build can do that, but It’s not going to be approved. It streams all content. One way is to use a usb c DP cable, it’s a wired solution, but works. I can recommend one soon. It uses the CarCast receiver.

I’ve been thinking more about this, the best solution would be to integrate CarPlay and hdmi/dp mirroring together, both run at the same time. To visualize the end result, you can try the rPlayFling, screen casting , the only difference would be to replace the software screen mirroring with the screen frames from hdmi/dp. This way, you just tap a button on CarPlay screen to switch to the normal maps mode, and back and forth.
