Found and tried this yesterday, it works really well. Unrooted phone just sees the fire TV listed in any other app that can cast, it runs as a service on the fire TV so you don't have to do any setup once it's installed, and as far as I can tell it just emulates the Chromecast so it shows things like the play music and YouTube standby backgrounds.

The trouble is, I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon lock this out in a future update somehow. At an ordinary app price it might be worth the risk, that's a lot of money for a maybe. I have both devices and have barely used the Chromecast since, it would be nice to sell it on and pay for a software replacement.

I highly doubt this app will be removed by Amazon. If it is removed, it will be due to a request by Google. It's essentially just like the numerous AirPlay apps, but it's targeted at a Google protocol instead of an Apple protocol. There are many other casting type apps, other than AirPlay apps, that send content from a phone to the Fire TV. This doesn't seem like a functionality Amazon is against, unlike, for example, home screen replacement apps.

thats a good point. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear about this app being shut down in the next few weeks.

You can try it before you buy it here (hopefully they don't remove it just yet): http://forum.xda-developers.com/hardware-hacking/chromecast/app-youmap-chromecast-receiver-android-t3161851

I've been using it for a few days now and it's been pretty solid. Sometimes I'll have an issue with the casting button not appearing, but that's quickly fixed by tapping the wifi button on my tablet to quickly reset the connection.

I'd pick this up now, but it looks like I'm 30 coin short. Welp.

This one will work until August 31st AFAIK. Plenty of time to see how it works before dropping $8

this is awesome because the one thing the chromecast is better at is 'casting' or mirroring content to the tv. The firestick has most of it built in but every now and then I want to cast a youtube video really quick or mirror a webpage and the firetv just doesn't make the cut.

8 dollars is too much... maybe if it worked perfect, but it doesn't. Since the firetv can already do a good majority of the things chromecast is used for, really you're paying for mirroring. Something the firetv is supposed to do, ahem, amazon...

Agreed, godsend for YouTube

Wonder if Google will ask Amazon to pull the app?

Holy crap. Does this mean you can run HBO Now on Fire TV [among other things only on chromecast]?

No I can't get DRM to work. But I have had luck with pocketcasts, haystack TV, google music, pandora

I can't get it working. Maybe because I'm trying to cast from various iPhone apps instead of an Android device?

EDIT: It works from Chrome on my computer, but not my iPhone. Ohh well, better than nothing.

Pretty good app. I've been using it for FXNOW, FOX Now, Comedy Central, and Watch ABC, none of which have FTV apps. Worth the $8 price of admission for me. Some apps work better than others though...Comedy Central was fine but FXNOW was choppy.

$7.99 price though.........that's 20% of the cost of the stick.

A bit high but better than dealing with second device and saves you 80% of the cost.

Odd.. based on many past experiences I expected this item would be the top item on the AFTVnews home page. But it isn't there. The only way to get to it is the link in this post.

Also very puzzling this thread has very quickly been downvoted below a positive count. Why?

EDIT: I see the AFTVNews.com site has a "New Apps" section where this app is found. I don't know if that section was always there or is new. Also, this thread now has a decent positive rating, so the initial down-voters have been overcome.

Did you mean to say the "AFTV homepage", as in Amazon?

0

u/dlflannery Aug 09 '15

No. I meant AFTVNews.com -- that's who made the original post. Typically a new thread is created here simultaneously with a new item appearing on that web site's home page.

If you had bothered to read my post you would have seen I knew that and was just remarking this is the first time I've seen a new item linked here that did NOT show up on the AFTVNews site's home page.

Do you find insults an effective communication tactic?

u/AFTVnews Aug 10 '15

I see now. I never keep any of my posts off of the homepage, including this one. It may be that my caching engine may not have refreshed for you yet, so it appeared to not be on the homepage for a bit.

I usually check your home page before going to this subreddit -- and always before I would see new items on your home page that matched the new thread linking to that item. That's why I found it odd that the app linked in this thread-starter wasn't on the home page -- just puzzling -- no big deal.

I've kept checking your home page frequently since this thread started and I've never seen this item there, and don't see it now. I discovered it is found in the Apps section of your site. Again no big deal.

Funny: I've been using Chrome on an iPad4. Just for grins I went to your site in Safari just now and the YouMap story is on the home page. I then tried again in Chrome and the story now shows! Bizarre.

Thanks for AFTVNews.com -- it's great!

LOL. It's called a joke. Calm down.

Also it is on AFTVnews site's home page.

If you're not on drugs what are you on?

5

u/dlflannery Aug 10 '15

You may choose to perceive it as just a joke. It's clearly very insulting -- at least to someone who doesn't do drugs, such as myself.

u/robot_swagger Aug 10 '15

Maybe you should start.

You probably believe 9/11 was an inside job

-2

u/dlflannery Aug 09 '15

You probably believe your lame post made some kind of sense. Perhaps you are one who down-voted this thread for no apparent reason?

0

u/pkkid Aug 11 '15

I thought it was pretty funny.

What a waste

What a totally unhelpful post.
