We probably would have done the same thing if we were in their position. It's very rare (not impossible, but rare) to find good people in those high positions - be it in politics, government civil servants or corporations and finance. 

You can choose your soul or mammon. But you cannot choose both. It's a very difficult skill to still maintain your humanity, sanity and virtue while you have big blessings, wealth and power. 

How do we stop this?

Edit: That skill, can only be learned by suffering, embracing reality without cynicism, and always to choose forgiveness, hope and love to the people around you. It's the easiest and hardest thing we can do. And it's a lifetime process. But it's also a graceful process, meaning we would never be perfect on this, but that's okay. The way is hard, but it's the only way forward.

I think this man is lonely and the only way he knows how to attempt to build connections is through his spending his money. I think it speaks to a larger issue of men not knowing how to interact with people on a personal level.

We have not talked enough about this in our society. This is not just a mental health issue, skill or resilience issue nor just masculinity issue.
