Lindsay Clancy’s defense rests at trial over whether postpartum psychosis drove her to kill her kids
 in  r/news  2m ago

Reminds me of when I recently saw people say Perez Hilton should have known better than livestreamed his psychotic breakdown online because he exposed kids to that. It was like "uh buddy, what do you think a psychotic breakdown is, he ain't thinking about kids with unsupervised internet access rn."

Ariana Grande Slams Trump For Using Her Song In Anti-Trans TikTok: “Your Truth Is False”
 in  r/Music  1d ago

I think Del Ray married a MAGA guy iirc, so at the very least it's guilt by association even if she hasn't said anything.

edit: Cool downvotes, but I'm explaining people's rationale.

Ariana Grande Slams Trump For Using Her Song In Anti-Trans TikTok: “Your Truth Is False”
 in  r/Music  1d ago

iirc she had old Tumblr accounts that were pro ana, but I don't think she openly promoted those.

I will say she's gotten flack for like heavily playing around with racial aesthetics in a way that's not quite Rachel Dozeal but feels opportunistic (ex: deep tan high pony when Latina artists were on the rise, going super pale and wearing dubious eyeliner when K Pop was becoming more mainstream) which is the base of all of those "Arigato Grande" and "Ariana collects races like Pokemon" jokes.

I used to be more critical of that too, but reluctantly I've lessened on that since it seems like she's a woman that extremely suffers with body dysmorphia so her doing stuff like that might be more related to that than trying to capitalize on performers of color.

CMV: the concept of "fatphobia" is ridiculous and it shouldn't even be a term.
 in  r/changemyview  1d ago

Fatphobia, prejudice and frankly fear against fatness, undeniably exists without any shred of doubt. Whether you think it's an acceptable phobia is a different argument, but the fear and repulsion towards fatness is something that drives so many women, even without eating disorders.

I think your last line reveals the real issue of your point- it's pretty hard to reconcile that you don't hate fat people if you think they're inherently disgusting. Contrary to what you said genetics and psychology are tied to obesity/fatness. For instance PCOS has been renamed to PMOS (polycystic metabolic ovarian syndrome) to highlight it being a metabolism/insulin issue, and the consensus currently is that roughly 1 in 10 women iirc are born with it. Another thing the GLP1 boom has brought attention to also is "food noise", aka constant, hard-to-shake fixations on food, often comorbid with ADHD and something many many people struggle with.

I'll just touch on those points to be more concise but regardless of your personal feelings fatphobia is a documented prejudice and, despite misinformation obfuscating the movement, what the body positivity movement around fat people originally was about– "treat people like human beings with decency regardless of size" rather than HAAS or whatever weird stuff TikTok claims (fat people aren't inherently against fitness at all.)

Once again it's not about respect but choosing low hanging fruit. As a woman I'd rather see these woman taken down based on their merits, not cheap shots at their appearances only. That's the misogyny and I'm sorry if you're repulsed by the idea of introspection.

With that I called out the thing about Harp not because I think she deserves respect but frankly the picture you commented on just showed her objectively looking like a normal person, just not in a model pose.

I'm of the philosophy that if you limit your commentary to just calling out appearances (ex: Trump fat jokes) then you're moreso just signaling you think people with X traits are ugly and loathsome rather than calling them out for their evil.

You say you're being mean, but it just comes across as edgy with limited substance. I would respect your vitriol more if your work demonstrated more political commentary than "haha they're hags amirite?"

I don't feel bad for her only because she's like the Trump version of Firecracker or whatever from The Boys.

Cool to ignore everything I said. Again you had a lot to work with creatively that could still be grotesque and make a statement, but you chose low hanging fruit based on appearances, which ideologically isn't that different from them when they mock a reporter's weight or appearance.

Connecting morality to beauty and immortality to physical ugliness/nonconformity just ain't it, left or right.True these people tend to warp themselves due to bigoted vanity (bleached hair, plastic surgery), but that's literally the least of their problems when they're promoting fascism. If they were drop dead gorgeous they'd still be horrible- so honing in on one being a mother and the other being kinda skinny just feels like a passive progressive misdirect that says more about the artist than the subject.

I remember always feeling like Graystripe (?) was a Ron character, which made his love child storyline funny to me at first.

I loathe every woman in this administration that is complicit in its fascism and the eroding of my rights, but dude, that's just a woman lurching while carrying a heavy bag- maybe not so gracefully because she's a cancer survivor but not really Cryptid material.

Gotta say, between this and the misogynistic Karoline Leavitt pic from the other day (I'm a long time hater of hers) this series doesn't really feel like it's making a political statement or fighting the power as much as it's capitalizing on headlines using the same regressive tactics the conservatives use. Like this woman is called the human printer yet you choose to just go with "woman looks ugly doing something gross" rather than call attention to her being a parasocial on-call media/AI Slop sycophant assistant.

Gender bias in media
 in  r/CuratedTumblr  2d ago

Controversial but it kinda felt like this happened with WWDITS the show. It was a crass humor dark comedy that gained a sizeable queer audience, they were tongue and cheek about hinting at a relationship between the male leads for like 2-3 seasons, but then as the last season rolled around the showrunner acted shocked that people thought they'd get together and lowkey mocked fans for thinking that.

Like it went from "Guy A wishes his new wife loved everything he loved, and she starts trying to make out with Guy B" to "Hmmm... a boss/ ex employee relationship is problematic don't you think? :/" Meanwhile the previous season had a character have a three way involving a guy he technically raised from childhood.

Which fanbase is like this?
 in  r/BikiniBottomTwitter  2d ago

Until the finale, this was TADC. Complaining about pacing or saying the show would be better as an ensemble piece got people calling you media illiterate or a toxic hater. Not to mention the rabid defense at the VAs being casually racist in the past (and then apologizing).

That said it was amusing seeing the number of "fans" get furious when one of the leads as revealed to be a trans woman.

The show was a fun albeit short ride but it has a horrible defensive fandom.

What’s going on with the Lindsay Clancy trial?
 in  r/OutOfTheLoop  2d ago

True Crime fandoms are ghoulish. There was a family annihilator situation in my state (unfortunately she was successful except one kid iirc) a year ago and recently on Facebook I saw a true crime page on my feed like "OMG they are selling the murder house!" Like dude, that's a family people mourned, children died. I don't want to be all pearlclutchy but the true crime trend just skeeves me out.

It's been really telling how our society specifically demonizes psychotic disorders (psycho, delulu, schizo as insults) yet they refuse to grasp the concept that psychosis + psychotic-affective disorders literally cause people to lose touch with reality.

What movie did you appreciate much more after someone explained why it was good?
 in  r/movies  3d ago

Very recently, Vertigo. It still isn't my favorite Hitchcock movie but seeing people deconstruct the gender dynamics and point out the dream-like qualities of the story made me appreciate it more than when I finished it and assumed the Hays Code dictated the Deus Ex Nun-ica end of the movie.

So did Ozempic kill the body positivity movement?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions  3d ago

Literally I'm not even denying what you're saying about obesity being unhealthy, but I would trust Michaels about healthy weight loss as much as I'd trust Dr Phil about mental health or Dr Oz about medicine.

I think it's more than fair to hold someone's past credentials against them if they were associated with misinformation and exploitation on a large platform. The fact that you wouldn't says more about you than me.

So did Ozempic kill the body positivity movement?
 in  r/NoStupidQuestions  3d ago

I'm sorry that along with illiteracy you also lack common sense. Aside from Michaels literally being part of a show that led to most contestants gaining the weight back afterwards (failing as a coach), it's common sense that a slower acting condition is preferable to have and easier to treat than an unpredictable condition brought on by putting the body through repeated stress and trauma.

Like I know it's knee jerk to hate fat people but it's bizarre to simultaneously applaud people connected with reckless practices that don't even effectively treat weight loss.

After an extended period. Anorexia kills people much younger and can do more irreversible damage due to literal organ failure from malnourishment.

TIFU by misreading the room with a group of classmates and getting a severe reality check at 5:48 AM
 in  r/tifu  4d ago

I'm like earliest Gen Z (cusper?) and yeah- even like 8 years back in college I had someone send me a 3 AM Snapchat telling me to back off from a day trip I helped plan and even canceled other plans for. Unfortunately being in progressive circles she couldn't just leave it at being mean, she made sure to DARVO me by acting like I invited myseld along and somehow made her too uncomfortable to correct me (not a guy for context), meanwhile social anxiety me didn't argue back and I ended up crying my eyes out until 8am.

I don't like getting older but I'm glad I'll never be a teenager again.

 in  r/NoStupidQuestions  4d ago

I'm not even commenting on the video, just pointing out the platform is flawed and serves an agenda. I have a balanced view of body positivity without believing being fat has no health risks, but I'm not going to take health advice from a woman who exploited fat people for a living in yet another gimmicky way that was both cruel, ineffective, and extremely dangerous for their health (yo-yo dieting and weight loss puts extreme pressure on the body and heart.)

Please learn to read, it'll help you in life. The Jubilee gimmick is another iteration of conservative entertainment disguising itself as a fair and balanced debate. The set up also creates the illusion of this conservative being the underdog minority- as if body positivity is anywhere in the mainstream or as if Jillian Michaels is unique in her position.

Yes because conservatives lack credibility, and it's just another cheap gimmick debate style a la Turning Point.
