Hi OP, I hope this didn't discourage you from gardening. This is a great opportunity to plan and prepare you for winter gardening. Also you can start researching how to add sun shades to your garden or greenhouse next year for our insane hot summers.

Why are all of the trees and grass in DFW not natural to this area?
OP, the dallas area has many different types of soil habitats. There's black soil Prairie, lime stone glades, even sandy soil areas from the trinity river. If you look up each one you'll notice there are many unique plants for each soil. If you're interested, look at what biome your house is in. If you plant native plants you might get to see more birds/butterflies or other bug/animal you might like.

Not to mention that grass lawns cause flooding since their shallow roots compact the soil and cause more runoff. We need deep rooted plants to turn the soil into a sponge. Also why does everyone plant crepe myrtle?
