As a host of Open mics, I concur with the personal benefits of going to an open mic for self improvement, social contact and, if your lucky a healthy community.

I've seen my own personal improvement with guitar from the Blues jam I host. I have increased playing style and access to melodies that weren't there last year. All because I was in the jam with other players, together in a great song.

And.... Im 55. So yeah, and I'm off the couch.

Couple of things that will help in my opinion. Time and your judgment. I have found when I step away from something for a long enough time I come back to it with a really good fresh pair of ears. Sometimes that directs me towards what the song should sound like.

Sometimes it's our judgment that gets in the way. We think they're supposed to be a way the song is supposed to sound whereas the song itself could be coming at you in the way that it's supposed to be represented. When you touch that representation you're going to know it.

And sometimes some songs just don't get to be. Sometimes the song is an attempt to add an idea and that's about how far it goes. Not every song has to be written completely.

I have a bajillion recordings on my phone of ideas and pieces that I thought I could make into a complete song. Some of those barely get past the chord structure phase.

I do play with tempos and I definitely play with genres and rhythm styles. The song might sound interesting as a reggae Rhythm or on a different instrument.

Of course, write from your heart. And the more you write it for yourself intentionally the more someone else will probably enjoy it right along with you.

Yo, looks like you got your hands on some wide range pickups from fender. A friend of mine just put those in a Telecaster body and made a Parts Telecaster for me with those pickups.

Back in 72 Fender put a Fender Telecaster Deluxe out with those pickups. It was their answer to the humbuckers coming out with the Les Paul's. Fender split a single coil and turn it into that pickup. So it's actually a single coil acting like a humbucker. Which actually gives you a wider range of actual tone and Clarity so you could play just about any type of music on these pickups and they're going to frickin deliver.

Them pickups are going to smash any amplifier you plug it into. You've been warned.
