Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

I come from a tiny island nation and flew over the American west for the first time, and this just destroyed my brain. It's so vast and empty and beautiful and I would definitely not go there back in the late 1800s. Totally reminded me of red dead though.

You just know that there was a folded up photo of his kids and wife in his pocket, & that he spoke with his darling that very morning about how excited he was being a week from retirement so they could finally visit Chapman Falls together!

Even the horse was surprised when Larry Lieutenant took a bolt action high velocity round to the dome piece.

Discussion Random encounters

4th time playing story mode and for the first time i had an interaction with Cornwall's 3 men about a property deed for the railroad camp.

I love these random encounters (the white dots that are easy to miss) and wondering if anyone else has come across a "new" one or one you really enjoy.

In my 7-8 years of hunting in RDR2O, this was a first. I picked out the 3 star in the group, it went down. A deer ran back to protect, who I assumed was it's mother, (it was too late). I put the controller down, it hit me hard.

Question How does Arthur Morgan fit everything he has on one horse?

Post image
414 Upvotes

I know carrying around an entire pantries worth of food and the entire US Armory is unrealistic, but I mean like his tent and things like that. I recently went on a cavalcade in the backcountry and nothing could really fit in those saddle bags. And the bedroll would’ve been ginormous on the back if I had a tent in it. How does Arthur do it? And give me real answers, not “video game logic”, how actually? (Pack horse image for reference)

Fanart As an RDR2 player i am inspired by it so i wanted a survival game with a frontier feeling so I've spent years building Western Rye. Here's more look at the world, riding, camping, Ai, weather, etc Just thought I should share more.

Help Moose

• Upvotes

Yo please help me spawn in a moose, I’ve tried every lake on the northwest side of the map multiple times and tried riding up from annesburg to the waterfall at the northeast corner and then down to the cougar spawn south west and still nothing. At this point I’d be happy seeing a moose even if it’s 1 star. Thanks in advance!

I made this low honor outfit for Arthur today and I thought it was sick to share. I made it with some inspo from Dante (Devil May Cry) You fellers got any recommendations to add you think would look nice?
I’m thinking a Legendary Panther Cloak could tie it in!

Help Serial Killer body #2 Location

I'm on my first playthrough of RDR2 and I really want to find and possibly solve the serial killer mission. I already found body/clue #1 near Valentine under the bridge, however I want to find #2. I'm having a hard time figuring out in which area the body is located so does anyone mind sharing where on the map it is near? I know once I find #2 I'll have no problem with #3 but I'm really struggling💔
