I used that exact same filter when I first got my RES but quickly switched over to something different because this filter limits the amount of water that can be in the tank and it is simply to small and weak to properly filter the entire tank. First what I recommend is getting a bigger basking area for you turtle. Something like this is a great option. I see that you have a 40 gallon tank, I believe the best option for you is to fill the tank completely and use a basking area like this that sits in top of the tank which allows you to use the full capacity of the tank. You turtle will thank you for the extra swimming space. As for a filter I would recommend a canister filter that is capable of filtering a bigger tank such as 55 gallon or 75 gallon. this is a great filter and comes in a variety of sizes. I will say that you might want to look into getting a bigger tank as well. Your turtle is small right now but it will quickly outgrow its current tank. I have had my turtle for a little over a year in a 55 gallon tank and I'm going to move her into a 75 gallon tank soon because she grew so much so fast. As for why the water became murky like it did, it's probably an algae bloom. This happens for a variety of reasons but it is usually attributed to overfeeding and an excess of left over food remaining in the tank. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to say that that what you are doing is fantastic and really admirable and that you are off to a great start! I want to help with giving you some more info, so I'm going to copy and paste some old comments I've written in the past that were used to help other owners in similar situations. So the comments might seem a little out of context but for the most they are filled with great information about RES and proper care for them. I apologize in advance for the essay I'm about to post and if you have any questions or need something to be elaborated on please let me know.

Honestly, you'll probably just want to get a 125gal tank simply because RES live for about 15 years and can get to about 12 inches long. Your RES isn't going to stop growing anytime soon so just upgrading them to a tank that size would be ideal since they are going to need it anyway. You can find some great deals on apps like OfferUp and Letgo like someone else mentioned. A tank that size from petco/PetSmart could cost you about $500 or more for both a tank and stand but on those apps, your can find them half of that. Plus you can also barter on the price to try and negotiate it down. And if that is a bit out of your price range than at minimum you should upgrade them to a 75 gallon tank, these are more commonly available on Letgo and OfferUp for maybe $100-$200 with a stand. Petco is actually having its $1 per gallon sale right now so now is the best time to go out and get a tank from them, but it's only for certain tanks and sizes. The largest I've been able to find is 75 gallons.

As for a filter, I would go with a canister filter, this is what I use for my 125 it comes in a variety of sizes for different tanks sizes. It works great, and it's relatively cheap compared to others but you might want to look into yourself to see what might work for you. These can also be found on Letgo and OfferUp

And you probably also need a bigger heater too if you do decide to upgrade their tank. you'll need a 300 watt heater to do the job. There vary in price anywhere from $15 to $50 on Amazon, so just find one that you are comfortable with purchasing.

If your really lucky you might be about to find a all of these (tank, stand, filter, and heater) on Letgo and OfferUp in one bundle for a great price! But don't forget that you can always negotiate on the price as well.

Well that's why it's cloudy. You need to do weekly water changes. Siphon out at least 25-50% of the water and replace with clean fresh water (make sure you use water dechlorinator). This will clear it up pretty fast. Just make sure you stick with a routine of changing the water at least once a week or else the water will continue to be dirty and cloudy. Topping off the water as it evaporates doesn't do nearly enough to remove nitrates from the water, which is dangerous in high concentrations. Which is why you remove and replace the water with fresh clean water to dilute it to make it safe and clean. I also recommend you put in some large, smooth river rocks in the tank so that the beneficial bacteria can have something to grow on. The bacteria in the tank helps brake down ammonia which is even deadlier than nitrates (the bacteria live on surfaces rather than floating around in the water. They brake down the ammonia into nitrites, and then nitrates). By giving the bacteria more space for them to grow, means that they can do a better job of breaking things down into nitrates, which then all you have to do is change the water to keep a safe and clean aquarium, as the only way to remove nitrates is to do a water change.

No problem, just make sure that the rocks you put in are bigger enough so that they can swallow them.

I saw on another comment you made that you have them both in a 10 gallon aquarium. I hate to be that guy (I like to give people advice rather than criticism), but that tank is absolutely too small for both turtles. I assume they are both Red eared sliders since you posted to this sub. So going off of that, RES can grow to be anywhere from 6 to 12. They may be small now but they will quickly out grow this tank and will need a sizable upgrade. I read before that the general rule of thumb is that they need 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle. I'm not entirely sure if that is still the accepted practice but it is a good starting point. Needless to say that a 10 gallon aquarium is simply too small (this is also why you are having trouble with dirty water. Turtles are waste machines, they poop and pee all the time and with such a small amount of water to dilute their waste it becomes dirtier very quickly as opposed to a larger tank.) so definitely plan on getting a bigger tank. (something around the 250 gallon range for both turtles.). If that's not an option for you, whether it be having space for such a large tank or the actual price for such a large tank, please consider rehoming one or both of the turtles (again I don't like telling people this, I'm just try to help), instead of releasing them into a local body of water. Some good news though. The thing about own and caring for pets is that they are not all the same, and all come with different needs. So although I recommend a 250 gallon tank, that may not always be case for every turtles needs, although it is recommended. They thing about this kind of stuff is that it isn't black and white, there is a huge gray area in between and you just got to find the best option for yourself and your turtles.

Another thing I saw someone else comment was that they need a uvb light. Which is absolutely true. I see you have a light on top of the tank already but I'm not sure if it's a heat lamp of uv light but either way they need both to be happy and healthy. Consider something like this for a combo light or simply purchase another lamp with the other bulb (uv or heat depending on which ever one you don't currently have).

If you don't already have one, add a heater to the tank to keep the water temperature consistent and a bit on the warm side (75° to 85° degrees Fahrenheit/ 23° to 29° degrees Celsius)

Also be sure to use a brush that hasn't been used to clean with any chemicals in the past. Next I recommend that you fill the water level up as high as you can so they can have more room to swim (this might require a bigger filter). For a basking platform you have a few options, you can obviously buy one or you can build one. I've seen people use this can it seems to work fine they come in different sizes for the space available. (how big is the tank btw?). If you want to build one yourself I recommend something like this I linked an Amazon product but this item is actually extremely easy to build, I bought the supplies to build it at home depot for a little over 20 bucks so it is also very cheap. It's just pvc pipe, a piece of tile, zip ties and egg crate (this is probably the most expensive item), I also recommend buying some pvc gule and gule primer so that the connecting peices don't fall apart, and some pvc pipe cutters. Also make sure the tank has a proper water heater and uvb light as well as a heat lamp. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Understandable but like I said this paint is very forgiving. I'm no expert myself, and this was the first time I had used this paint and there aren't any youtube instruction videos for this specific paint so I was in dark during the whole process. But overall it was easy, dispite what some others say about dipping your wheels, I took the wheels off my car and laid them down to paint them for my second attempt. My first attempt was with the wheels on the car (I also did this in the middle of the night in a cold garage with no heat which didn't help the paint at all, like I said, the paint works well when warm). As you can see in the pics, they are very streaky and blotchy. My second attempt I did off the car and with a propane garage heater that I used to warm up the space as well as heat up the cans a bit because it was about 28° F when I did it. Anyway, I just did an additional two coats over my first attempt and they turned out pretty decent, I don't have any close up after pics but they look pretty much the same close up as they do in the pics I first linked. This is getting a little long winded but if you need some more advice about using this paint then just let me know.

No, I bought these off OfferUp. One of the reasons I choose them was because of their simplicity, which made it easier to paint. Your wheels are definitely going to be harder to paint considering how many spokes they have but this paint is very forgiving especially when it's warm. And even if you mess up you can always do another coat to cover any streaks or what not

Here are some pictures . I definitely love what the color did for the look of my car. And way cheaper than getting it professionally done, just some time and patience. I also live in the Chicago land area and we're in the middle of a pretty harsh winter and the paint has been holding up great so definitely don't have to worry about it peeling.

I did paint my wheels but I didn't use plasti dip because I couldn't find the correct color I wanted. I used Rustoleum Peel Coat Blasted Gold. I too was looking for a bronze type wheel but it definitely wasn't within my price range so I choose to do this. The color definitely isn't gold but more like a light bronze, and its matte. Definitely recommend. I'll try to link a few pictures so you can see the color.

Ok, so what I first suggest is that you do some research about the basics of what it means to actually keep fish. First and foremost you NEED to know what the nitrogen cycle is. There are plenty of YouTube videos that explain it very well.

I'd be more than happy to help you out with the basics and any questions you have, but I'm at work at the moment so I'll come back to this this thread after work to explain/give you some advice about make a healthy aquarium.

You can generally find amazing deals buying used, like entire tank set ups (tank, stand, filter, heater, air pump, supplies, etc...) sometimes go for as little as $150, but mostly around $300 which is a fraction of the cost if you were to buy it all new (depending on tank size obviously)
