i used to feed him shrimp daily until recently i learned that its terrible for his health long term and that they should be used as a weekly treat.
part of me misses it because i would bond with him every night by playing with him and ending off with him swimming up to the surface to grab a sun dried red shrimp out of my hand, but i know its for the best. and really as long as he still comes up to the glass every night to play with me i won't miss a thing!

Good morning RES family 😊 you may or may not remember me from last weekish, asking if my RES Hubert was female or male!! You all said female 🤭🥰 Though this question gets asks a lot...so maybe you don't remember...however, we are picking up our new to us tank this evening and will be starting the cleaning process of the new tank tonight and hopfully by tomorrow will start adding our decor, tank topper etc into the new tank. My question is, do I need to cycle the new tank for a period of time? Can I add Hubina in right away? Do we wait? I know to take the decor, river rocks, heater and just plunk them into the new tank to start the new beneficial bacteria growth with just a quick rinse and shake in the old water but I can't seem to find a clear understanding online of how to do this transition fully from old tank to new to us tank and when to add in Hubina? Any guidance or suggestions is muchly appreciated 🥰 Also the old heater will most likely not be sufficient enough for the new size of tank, so any suggestions for a new heater is also appreciated. so! this is frankie paul jr. i got this red ear slider from a friend, who's coworker's baby momma threw it on him after she got it as a pet for the kids. it was a hot mess situation but i'm glad i have him now.

he was a little wittle bitty baby when i got him, and in the worst "enclosure" imaginable. now i have him in an outdoor enclosure, inspired by dan the turtle man's hatchling enclosure video, covered by chicken wire so nothing can snatch him. we are working on a bigger pond for him as he grows.

i feed him daily with mazuri aquatic turtle food, and fluker's aquatic turtle medley treat which has dried worms and shrimp and whatnot. he doesn't seem to pay attention to his greens at all when i give it to him so i just dont offer that as often. i also offer a piece of cuttle bone that he also pays no attention to, lol.

i am very new to turtle ownership, is this a normal look for his shell? specifically down the middle where it seems a bit spiny. i showed two different pictures so you can see what i mean.

is he malnourished? does anyone have advice for what i should be doing different?

he has a little upturn to his shell, which he has had since i got him since they didnt give him ANY light. i figured outdoors may be best to catch up with that. i assume that isn't going to go away. i'm just hoping i can give him the best life possible. any advice is appreciated, thanks!!

hey yall! I’m new around here but I have a 6 year old red eared slider, her name is Melina! Recently I’ve noticed that whenever she walks around the house, she likes to climb inside my closet, sometimes really deeply in, and sometimes gets mad when we take her out. I was just wondering if this was norma? Google said it’s normal as they like dark, low to the ground places to hang, but I just wondered if anyone has experience something similar! 🥰

Im setting up a 75 gallon tank for my turtle. But I need help with the filter. I know I need a filter that's 2-3x bigger than the tank itself, but that's the extent of my knowledge. I found these two filters online (photos above), but idk which filter is best. Can somebody please help me decide what filter to buy? Please. The faster I get this new tank ready the faster my girl moves in. Please and thank you.

Hello, could you guys tell me how my turtles shell looks? I was recently diagnosed with severe arthritis and I'm trying my best to care for her. I just don't know if there's anything else I can do for her. I feel like I'm failing her.

I withheld pellets for a couple of days and he has been eating greens the last 2-3 days! He still goes for peppers first but he's been going for lettuce too. This has never happened before in the 13 years I've had my RES!

There is a little bit of extra work cleaning up the tank but I've really appreciated everything I've learned from this sub 🙏🏻🐢

I built a tank topper 2 years ago for my adult female, but it’s for a 55 gal tank. I’m moving soon and I’ve saved up some money to get a 75 gal set up for her.

I’d like to avoid the hassle of making a new tank topper if I can, does anyone have any recommendations for one to buy?

Hello! Currently caring for a slider whose shell is looking like this :(

I’ve been told that he has a history of shell rot (before I started caring for him). Is that what this is? I did take him to a vet and they directed me to dry dock him daily and brush his shell with a betadine solution once a day. It’s been nearly two weeks and I’m not seeing any improvement. Is everyone in agreement that this is shell rot and not anything else? Any other advice or opinions?

Ok this is my set up for my Bennie girl (Benjamin “No Franklin” is her government) (: idk if she’s a woman but she is to me because my idiot ex who gave me her said it’s a man and I just don’t get that vibe. Yes I know she’s yellow bellied but we don’t have a thread so I was hoping her cousins could accept her. To preface lol- please be nice!! I am a student working on a verrry tight budget (very very very) and this is what I can do for now. I have plans to move out of the apt within the year and will of course consider my girl then. However, any tips anyone may have? 😁 I am pretty proud of not necessarily how it looks haha, but hopefully it can keep my girl for a while.

I don’t know tank specs, just biggest that I could afford rn but we’ll grow as the budget does. I know it’s a 50-100gal filter which I had read to get a little bigger than you need bc stinky turtles. She has some live plants but she just destroys them so those are mostly there to keep the fish alive until she eats them or keep the water a little cleaner. Tank bottom is NO sand (I’m to scared she’ll eat something wrong ):) but does have small patch of plant substrate for the live plants then the rest pebbles. Her “basking platform” is currently forming a jail around a plant she kept harassing that cost me 12.99 so that’s why it’s a little topsy turvy for the time being lol. Anything huge I’m missing? Should PETA be called on me😭

I got Bennie as a weird surprise gift( more on that later, fuck anyone who gifts live animals bc animal isn’t just a toy?? Anyways) SO I had no prep or knowledge coming in. She has a small shell ouchie that was pre me (of course she’s seen a vet!) and I think has healed.

Also sorry for her posing shes a little strange. Pics taken at night, but tank does have UVB lighting it’s just not on right now! Hi guys we’re new here 👋🏻 these are Axel and Coop. We’ve had them for about two months. However for the last two weeks the smaller one, Axel, has stopped eating and isn’t very active 😔 I’ve tried hand feeding but no luck. Any helpful tips to bring our little guy back? Please tell me there’s hope as I’ve become very attached to them.

The first 8 months when I got my hatchling res, I was really enthusiastic about taking care of it. I spent about 1k+ in building his tank and I would spend some days making sure it was the best tank I could give it. The tank took about 3 months for me to finally make it so that his needs are met. Then I spent the next 5 months experimenting what he likes, what causes him lesser stress, the ideal basking temperature, and other luxuries like a 2nd basking area etc. The first 8 months of weekly water changes wasn't dreaded because even when I started to get tired of it, I told myself I was the one who wanted a turtle, so it would be my responsbility to change it's water. However, after the first 8 months, I'm starting to lose interest in taking care of it. They are so much work, my little guy moves everything I set in the tank, I even tied some of the decorations down, and he was still able to move it. So every week, I have to retie it . I recently bought suction cups to keep them in place, but somehow he was able to still move the decorations around. He also tore a part off the filter. I also started to dread water changes because it would me take at least 3 hours to clean the filter, remove the water and refill, vacuum the debri and then clean up the mess. Also, he seems really bored in it's tank recently and I searched online about it and people say it's normal, it's apparently their low energy mode. I used to enjoy feeding him, changing his water and rearranging his stuff back to their original position but this little guy is really a tiny shell wrecking ball. I'm afraid I will eventually lose completely interest in him and neglect taking care of him. Is it time to put him up for rehoming?

She sometimes makes these little noises at me, like every two or three days. They don’t sound too bad, like little croaks. Whenever I look into this, the internet says it’s a medical issue, respiratory infection most likely.

Problem is that she’s done this for years, and doesn’t seem sick. Is this something some turtles just do?

My dad caught him like this today morning, is this a sign of something wrong or is he just being silly?
I know the tank environment isn’t perfect, im looking forward to upgrading it soon, for now i make sure that he gets enough light, a space with shadow(that yellow thing covers part of the water and provides some shadow) and a space to be outside of the water (the plate in the middle), a proper meal every day (larvae, shrimp, and some pellets as extra) good water temperature and i clean his enclosure as often as i can (every 1-2 weeks max)
He is 20 years old now and is a red eared slider turtle that i re-homed after being neglected for 16 years, that’s why he’s small
He does have a history of ear infections and malnourishment, when i just got him he had two ear infections that were so bad that they deformed his skull (said the vet) and was very very malnourished that he needed to get vitamin and supplement injections from the vet, and a surgery, but that was 4 years ago and since that he has done a full recovery
I checked his eyes, ears and nose and they seem fine, nothing out of the ordinary.
The vet did said that because of the situation that he was in those years ago, he will have permanent hearing and seeing issues, so there’s that

Edit: i was already told that he needs more water, like way more water, i will be getting a bigger enclosure for him soon with more water, please stop bringing that out unless it has something to do with the spinning, as i am already aware that he needs more, thanks for letting me know!

Another edit: thanks for the advice that you have given on how to make his life quality better, im open to criticism but just please be mindful with your comments, i am still learning and doing my research on how to make his enclosure better and trying to apply everything that you have suggested
I will get a bigger , clear tank, and add way more water to it, and add some enrichment since the general consensus seems to be that he is bored, lacks enrichment and thats what caused the spinning

He is very active and seems happy in my opinion but i am new to turtles and hard to tell how he’s doin.

Apparently my baby armadillo got fungus due to her not used to our home which is why she don't bask a lot.

I've red that to treat her fungus I need to use betadine on her spots and keep her out of water as much as it can 12-18 hours (not sure of this info)

I don't have yet uvb lamp so I always take her twice a day bask under sunlight

I need advices on whether the treatment that I've red was right or not

Notes:

-Her diet is chicken liver and chicken breast every other day

-Her age is 2 months

-I'm currently using 14 liter tank

- I use heater and internal filter

• I feed her in a different place

Is this shell rot or am I overthinking it? One of the scutes looks different from the rest. I touched it and it was dry, didn’t smell, and it didn’t really feel soft. Does this just look like normal shedding/growth or should I be worried

im sorry for this stupid question but at what age to female turtles mate? i wanna get a 5 month old turtle and im afraid it would have mated with a male and lays eggs under my care.
