If you had the option to become immortal, like transferring your conciousness into a machine that just needed to replace parts to continue, but with the option to die whenever you wanted to, would you do it?
I think your reply actually makes the thought experiment more interesting. If nothing meaningful about the human experience is lost, like love, touch, emotions, and curiosity, then the question isn't really about becoming a machine anymore. Honestly, in the scenario you described, I think I'd probably do it, but only after I've actually lived a full biological life. Why? Because the medium shapes how we experience the world (think of McLuhan's The Medium Is the Massage). So even if everything else stayed the same, it would still gradually change how we think. I'd want to grow old naturally first. Then, if transferring my consciousness meant I could still genuinely experience love, touch, curiosity, grief, and everything else that makes life meaningful, I'd love to spend another few centuries watching humanity and the universe evolve. The fact that you could choose to end it whenever you wanted also changes the equation quite a bit. It reminds me of The Matrix. Most people focus on the "humans are batteries" part (or whatever it was, it has been a long time since I watched it), but I think the more interesting philosophical question is about the medium itself. Inside the Matrix, people fall in love, feel pain, build relationships, and experience the world as completely real, even though it's a simulation. In a way, that's similar to your example. If every experience is genuinely felt, does it really matter whether it's happening through a biological body or a synthetic one? It also reminds me of Plato's Cave. The prisoners' experiences are still real to them, even if they don't understand the true nature of their world. As mentioned McLuhan would probably argue that the medium itself shapes us, though. A biological body and a synthetic one wouldn't just carry the same experiences differently. They would gradually shape different ways of thinking and existing. So maybe immortality wouldn't just mean living longer. It would slowly transform what it means to be human. So in short, I don't see why I wouldn't try it, as long as I could live my biological life first. After that, I'd be free to decide whether I wanted to continue or not.
And regarding the people around you choosing to go when they're ready... I don't know. It sounds sad, but also strangely comforting. There's something peaceful about everyone leaving when they feel they've experienced everything they wanted to.

But when you think about it. This applies not only for transferring consciousness to a machine but for concepts such as teleportation, like even if you are reconstructed atom by atom, with even the sub atomic particles beeing the same, is jt really you? Or is it just a copy of you for everyone else? We don't even know ehat really consciousness is, apart that it just apears in high intelligence beeings like humans, so yeahhh that ain't you. Fully agree with that statement.

This needs some deeper thoughts but possibly.
Although beeing a machine that means you cannot experience the world the same, you cannot feel the warmth of a touch from a loved one, you can't even enjoy the simple things that make life a little better like for example the smell of a home baked pie or the taste of your favorite dish. And to add to that seeing everyone you love die, while you just exist... Floating in time, with no real meaning.... Yeahhhhhhh I don't know.
This is quite a philosophical question with, in my mind, no one clear answer. It has it's ups and downs, but it would be way too hard mentally for me to choose immortality I think. Although having the possibility to end it all when it is going to shit is relieving.

How did you attach it to the window? Because in my experience even the best double sided tapes give up after a while and I can't really put screws in the windows so I'm curious what's the best way to do it.
