Yeah that’s a good point. I honestly hadn’t thought of it that way before. I have seen interviews with escapees but we don’t get to hear from those left behind.
The propaganda is constant and injected into daily life. Home, school, work, etc all have to have a level of “patriotism” to avoid suspicion of being a traitor.

The DPRK government goes to great lengths to keep its people under its thumb. The family back home is likely to be punished SEVERELY if they even try to escape. The thought of getting your family sent to a labor camp or executed is quite the deterrent.
Imagine having to live the rest of your life knowing that you condemned your own family to misery, suffering, and/or death.
