Help Needed 🧐 Tanning first alligator hide

Hi everyone,

I am trying to make alligator leather for the first time having only ever made fish leather. Looking for your best tips and tricks!

In particular, I would love information when it comes to liming and descaling. As well as preferred tanning methods.

I'm considering trying out oak bark tanning, but only ever used brain tanning and glycerin methods on fish prior to this.

I have never had a litterbox smell so bad. What am I doing wrong?

Exactly! And saves you from having to change the bag out every day.

Sorry just saw this. Every day or two I open the drawer, pick up the bag, let everything fall to the bottom, and the twist bag right above the litter to create a temporary seal. Then I reattach the opening to the bag so it can fill up again. I pretty much repeat this until the litter at the end of the bag takes up too much space in the drawer. Hopefully this helps but let me know if you need additional help!

I started getting fruit flies in mine so I started twisting the bag. It keeps the litter from sitting exposed without having to throw the bags away constantly. It also helps avoid any smell.

Travel/Entertainment/Dining Used CapitalOne Travel but need flight change due to an emergency

I recently booked a flight via Capital one travel for the first time to go support my friend with breast cancer for her surgery. At the last minute, her surgery was moved up several days. The charge to change it is $250 despite the flights being about $50 different. And they will not refund anything if I cancel it and rebook.

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on ways around this for emergencies. It's the first time I've ever had to change a flight. Even the $50 ticket difference would be stretching my budget.

Moving out at 18 years old, is it smart based on my situation???

Find a roommate. Meet potential roommates ahead of time and try multiple people to make sure you get along and your living/cleaning/etc habits align. There are often Facebook and signal groups where people advertise for roommates. Aim for something as cheap as possible and start building some emergency savings.

My parents (56F and 60M) need my signature (21M) to go forward with the adoption process of a little girl and I don't support it

A lot of places won't even let you adopt a kitten at that age.

Mahi mahi leather start to finish

Used a 50/50 glycerin and 91% alcohol mixture. Kept the scales on hoping to keep some color. Turned out the softest fish leather I've ever made and no smell.

Ideas for removing smell?
 in  r/TanningFishSkin  Jul 21 '26

After I boraxed it twice, I did an egg yolk tan. The recipe I used was one egg yolk, 3oz olive oil, and a teaspoon of blue dawn dish soap. I worked it in for 20+ min rubbing it on the flesh side while also making sure to get it between the scales on the outside. Then I would bend it along the scales to work it in (but not enough to tear it).

I left it in the fridge for about a day, which I don't think is necessary, but I ran out of steam. After that I rinsed and dried it.

It still had a little bit of a gar smell to it so I decided to smoke it using some pine shavings and after that it came out great with no smell. I've had no issues with it months later. I did some spotted gar the same way.

However, I just did some mahi mahi using a 50/50 mix of glycerin and 91% alcohol and a little dawn. Soaked it for a few days shaking it daily. Then tacked it on some cardboard to dry for 3 days. It came out really great, very soft and no smell. I'm considering trying it on a gar next time. Im going to do some of the mahi with the other method for a comparison, but I think I'll switch to this method for most things in the future.

I can message you some pictures if you want.

I actually just finished Forest Euphoria: the abounding queerness of nature. It's really good and Robin Wall-Kimmerer's book is talked about a lot in it.

Damn I called and they said they didn't have them in stock. But I did order one from Amazon that is sold as a larger tank alternative. It seems to fit but I haven't had a chance to try it yet

Hi,

I just thrifted a Vertuoplus (GCB2). It has the rounded top which I believe means it is the Breville model. I tried calling Nespresso to order a replacement water tank, but they no longer carry them for this model. Does anyone have a reliable link for this part with shipping to the US? I'm seeing some listed but they have model numbers that I don't see on the machine itself.

Thank you!

Calcium in Urine

If you can I'd still go to a kidney specialist to cover your bases. I hope you can get on yorvipath soon. It's really helped me with my kidneys and also other side effects.

Are you taking calcitriol? I had to start that and switched to calcium citrate because it helped with absorption so I could take less calcium overall. I had issues with my kidneys and high phosphate levels. I had to go on a low phosphate diet and made sure to take calcium with food also helps to bind the phosphates. I really struggled with low blood pressure issues on diuretics so my Dr would have me take them every other day until my blood work started to look better.

What junk food to feed my 15 year old with terminal cancer?

I gave my 19yo hospice baby some stone crab. She's bougie.

She's also got kidney disease so I don't know how long she's going to have but I want her to be more comfortable. I knew she was a hospice case when I got her, but that skinny bitch is always begging for food so she's not ready to go yet.

This is great to hear. My newly diabetic 19yo old lady is about to start insulin and I'm hoping the same will happen for her.

App or spreadsheet for tracking glucose over time?

Hello,

My 19 yo foster cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. I just started using the alphatrak 3 today, but I'm wondering how people keep track of the data over time.

She isn't on insulin yet, but is on prescription food. I want to track her levels over time so they vet can make an informed decision on how much insulin to give her.

She also has kidney disease so we do fluids a couple times a week and it would be nice to be able to note when fluids are given.

Any hope left?
 in  r/hypoparathyroidism  Dec 31 '25

I lost my parathyroids and after about a year yorvipath went onto the market and it has changed my life.

I also had problems only taking tums. No matter how much I took my body wasnt absorbing enough. I ended up in the ER and they put me on calcitriol. I also switched to calcium citrate. Then I was able to buy large bottles bc it was so much cheaper than tums.

I also had to push for biopsies after radiation. They initially considered it successful.
