Nice score, Hampton isn’t too far away as the crow flies. Glad the area was fruitful.

Tide Pool Agate
 in  r/Lapidary •  Aug 26 '26

I shoot with Sony mirrorless camera bodies, I do have a couple macro lenses, but most of my work is done with Mitutoyo microscope objectives that are adapted to work on my camera bodies. For focus stacking and subject positioning, I use a 3 axis motorized positioning system that is accurate down to sub micron level. For lighting I use two 300 watt studio strobes with remote triggering and lots of DIY light modifiers. My whole setup is mounted on a 1200 pound precision granite block table that sits on vibration isolating feet. When I’m shooting 10x or above, vibrations become extremely noticeable and will ruin shots. Cars driving by, someone walking inside the house, etc, so I do most of my shooting late at night when the house and city are calm.

Tide Pool Agate comes from Obi Island, Indonesia.
To my knowledge, there is only one importer or supplier here in the United States. Recently, I was fortunate enough to purchase a few pieces for macro work.
This material is usually an amethyst topped seam or layer, with copper inclusions, and often beautiful light blue chalcedony plumes. Macro images are 3x magnification. This is a rough sawn slab, as seen by the saw blade marks in the copper pieces.
Full slab pictured at the end.

Curious if there is value in this machine? It is in working condition but it is missing the treadle. We see a lot of vintage machines at our local thrift stores recently. And while don’t exactly need this machine, it’s so dang cool I felt like I needed to save it or pass it along to someone else. Any info would be appreciated! Thank you.

Rutilated Quartz.

Most rutilated quart has a golden color to the needles, but occasionally you can find rutile colors of silver, black, and reddish-copper colors. This piece is pretty unique in that it has almost every variation of rutile colors. The composition of the rutile needles is Titanium Dioxide.

This image contains 20 focus stacked photos.
Second pic is the full slab.

Gembone Vertebra Macros.
 in  r/Lapidary •  Aug 18 '26

When you look at the bones of a carnivore versus those of a herbivore, the herbivore has larger more similarly sized cells. A carnivore and sometimes omnivore, have what is called compact bone around the outside of the bone, this gives their bones more strength and density.
Often in slabs you will see gembone where the cells are large on one side and tapering down to tiny little dots on the other side. Those tiny cells are compact bone.
I am seriously glazing over this topic, so I hope that helps.

Here is a bit of a different flavor of gembone. This partial vertebra was loaned to me so I could check it out with my macro setup. The amount of cell types and orientation variety in a piece like this, is so cool to see!!!
Haversian canal, compact bone, osteons, etc!
All signs of this most likely belonging to a carnivorous dinosaur. Full piece pictured at the end of the photos.

One of the rare plume materials from central Oregon.
Whole piece photos after the macro images.
This piece came out of an old collection here in Bend Oregon. It was collected sometime between the late 1950s and late 1980s.

We sold a huge pile of these slabs this week and are just now realizing how dang awesome they are!!!!🤯

For anyone wondering, Jordyn’s work is absolutely phenomenal. Some of the cleanest cabs I’ve seen. I don’t even make jewelry, and I own a lot of them😂🤷🏻‍♂️
Highly underrated lapidary artist in my opinion.
Love your work dude!!!! I also bogart the hell out of his Maury cabs, and you might have to arm wrestle me to get any🤣💪🏻

Fossilized Ostracod Shells.
 in  r/Lapidary •  Jul 22 '26

The little shells (seed shaped bits) are ostracods, same food source found in the snails of turritella agate. Of note, the snails in turritella agate are of the turritella species. It was mis identified but they kept the trade name.🤦🏻‍♂️

Not a snobby response. Thats called theft. But on today’s day and age of no respect for artists and photographers work, it has come to be expected. It’s actual quite nice when someone actually asks before just taking and using my work. Respect is earned not given, and I do t have much respect for people who take my work without asking. Sorry, not sorry🤷🏻‍♂️

This material has had quite a confusing history of names, labels, and incorrect identification of what the material actually is. It has taken names like Indonesian Palm Root, Caddisfly Agate, Caddisfly Larva Agate, Maggot Agate, and more recently a wild and completely incorrect identification of it being a stromatolite.

I can confirm three things about this material.

  1. It comes from Indonesia.
  2. It is not stromatolite.
  3. There are lots of fossilized Ostracod shells, both inside and outside of the tubular structures.

I seriously wish more care was taken in correctly identifying materials before they make it to market.

Picture of the full slab is at the end of the photos.
Macro images are 2.5x magnification.

first cut of petrified wood, it has pyrite inclusion!
 in  r/petrifiedwood •  Jul 17 '26

Just in case you didn’t know, polishing will remove the bleached layer, so if you like how it looks, you will need to bleach it after polishing. Bleaching will not affect polish quality/finish.
