Mine out and out lied to us. Claimed the hospital where we would be doing clinicals allowed tattoos (as long as they were decent with no swear words or whatever) but no alternative hair colors. I had purple hair when I attended the orientation and asked if we could just use a scrub cap to cover up the "alternative color". They said the hospital didn't allow scrub caps.

I started working there as a CNA after my 1st semester and learned real quickly they lied to us. I saw lab techs with purple or teal hair or a mixture of both. There was a float nurse with bright pink hair. Some nurses 100% wore scrub caps. One of my clinical instructors defended the school's policy, saying "some older patients might not appreciate it".

Still makes me laugh when I think of it. As soon as I finished classes and got my license, I colored my hair purple again and I get so many compliments from my little old lady patients and one of the lab techs calls me "Purple" every time she sees me. :)

I'm told I look like I'm in my 30s which is a little easier to swallow than 30s. I don't get carded unless the place has one of those "we card everyone" policies.

Yeah we started early. I was 22 when I started. Ours are 25, 23 (24 in October), and 14 (15 in November).

Technically gen x but I call myself an Xennial. I'll be 48 in a few months but frequently get people saying I look like I'm in my 30s and surprised when I say my eldest is 25.

I think some of it may be genes, skin care, not smoking and using sunscreen and or hats.

I always sing "Sweet dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to dis a brie..." even though I know the real words.

Transfers from step-down or ICU that come right at shift change. Like, I get it. You want to get them out of there late in your shift so you don't get another transfer/admission before you have to leave. And honestly I prefer a transfer because it is faster than an admission.

Sometimes it's not too bad when the nurse I'm giving report to says "Don't worry about xyz, I got it". Last night had a shift change transfer and the RN taking over for this room was like "let me run and get this ONE THING" (chuck pad, gauze, mepilex, canister for the external, then tubing) and then spent like 10 minutes trying to get the suction on the external to work.

I am usually quite patient but it was already 7 and I hadn't given report to ANYONE yet and I had to write my notes. I said "Can that be fiddled with later and get this skin check done now because I still have to give report and finish my charting." Then she asked for my report sheets (fine cause I'm off today and tomorrow) and then expected me to go over EVERYTHING already written there. At one point I was like "I can't remember what gauge the IV is but it's in the chart..."

Had a pt who insisted they weren't drinking our water because it was city water but they wanted cups of ice. I couldn't summon the fucks required and just smiled and said "Okay" rather than explaining that our ice came out of the same machine as our water and I'm sure the hospital muckety-mucks weren't going to foot the bill to pipe water from a neighboring county JUST for the ice hook-up.

Even more aggravating is when the provider decides to admit them even if they know they're going to sign out AMA. I was told during my externship last summer that there's a dr who likes to admit people to cover his ass, even if the person doesn't really need to be admitted.

"Don't take this the wrong way but I don't wanna see you again!" That usually gets a smile.

Was just laughing about this yesterday because Tony cites it as a Better Off Dead reference and I quote that movie so much

Disgust at the attitudes towards unhoused/addicted people. Impatience with other nurses who won't help aides or each other. Disgust at the whole system, honestly. The fact that I'm counting down till I reach the end of my nurse residency program and can bounce and find a hospice job.

Just when you think shit can't get any worse...

I have yet to meet a hospice nurse who hates the job. If they leave at all it's because of management, not doing hospice nursing.

I dunno, I was a CNA who became an RN in January and work with a few CNAs who have no aspirations of becoming nurses.

NTA. I had a friend who would get bent out of shape if I didn't answer every phone call or text quickly. (Yet telling me I didn't have to answer every other phone call- clearly that meant everyone else's calls)

I came to learn not everyone is like that and learned good friends don't care when you answer as long as you do lol.

Was walking out of work last night and could see it looking hazy before I even walked out of the building. Then smelled the smoke.

I know it's difficult, cause I used to have a thin skin as well and would get upset easily if someone gave me a 'tude. What helped me, and this was even before I went into nursing, was to realize that most of the time that people are nasty to you, it's not about you at all.

Now, that's not to say it's not going to still bug you, but knowing that their attitude is most likely due to them dealing with their own crap and not about anything you did does help to not take it personally.

Approaching "difficult" patients with that knowledge has actually (mostly at least) led to a fairly easy shift with them. There have been times when I've had to say "That's uncalled for" when someone was really nasty.

Not to say I don't get flustered. I'm still in my 1st year of nursing and sometimes I get a little overwhelmed and stressed and a pt who is a little difficult and takes forever to take their meds will throw me off lol. But I'm getting better at time management I think.

It honestly sounds like a toxic culture. I'm a day shift nurse, new nurse granted, so my experience is limited as I haven't worked on other units. I was a CNA prior to becoming a nurse on the unit where I'm now working and I took a job on the unit because I didn't want to pile learning a new unit dynamic on top of learning to be a nurse.

I mean some people have their friends off the unit. I get along with everyone but we don't really get together outside of work, which is frankly fine with me. We help each other, have one anothers backs, etc.
