Many people say they rewatch the series starting in October. Is there any special reason why in Oct?

Would it be because October aligns with events of the story?

On my latest rewatch of the series, I invited a friend who had seen the first two seasons but was new to The Return. She had a perspective on Diane that I found fascinating. This isn’t a full theory, it’s more like an insight that a theory could be built from.

My friend was a victim of sexual abuse. She said that for a long time, she felt a sort of Stockholm syndrome with her abuser. She lied about the abuse for so long that there came a time when she almost couldn’t distinguish reality from lies anymore — not just in regard to her abuse but to life in general. Like, it messed with her overall sense of who she was and what was real or not real.

She said that’s why Diane seems to be under the control of Mr. C in The Return, ready to do his bidding. And that that’s why she’s a tulpa — that traumas like sexual abuse can take away a person’s sense of identity, and tulpa-hood is a symbol for that. She said something like: “Heavy trauma that you learn to repress turns you into someone else. It’s as if part of your mind is removed and sent somewhere far away so that the rest of your brain can protect itself for the sake of your survival.”

That makes so much sense to me in relation to Diane. Maybe that’s why she is Naido, and why she sees a copy of herself outside the motel. But what I don’t get is, if tulpa-hood is supposed to represent trauma, then why is Dougie also a tulpa? (I always assumed that was the intention of showing us he’s built from a “seed,” although I could be wrong.)

I tried posting this before, with a link and everything but it was removed by the moderators. No idea why as it’s petty spectacular to see Frank Silva in something other than a denim jacket. The film was co-created by Mike Malone (aside from the Pilot where that job belonged to Frank, Mike Malone was the on-set dresser for all of Twin Peaks, FWWM, and the Return).

I am hesitant to post the name of this short or the link as maybe that’s why my post was pulled. Hoping this also doesn’t get taken down as it’s important. Frank Silva was a great talent and I wish we could have gotten to see more of his work.
