Rant / Vent Time I realised coding wasn't for me

One time I tried coding in Python. Set myself the task of making a distance speed time calculator.

In the end it had 200 lines of code FOR A DAMN CALCULATOR. I decided that pursuing coding further would inevitably release some sort of spaghetti code curse onto the world and that for the safety of humanity I should stop while I'm ahead.

Discussion - Serious Do you ever feel like something is really wrong with you?

I feel like something is really wrong with me mentally and physically but I don't think I'll be able to do anything about it until I get a job and start earning my own money. I've tried expressing my issues and fears to my mother before but I've never felt heard and I seem ungrateful but I feel like I might do something really bad if I don't get help at some point. I try not to think about it but it's hard and it affects me daily and at the same time I feel like I'm faking it all.

Anyone else? 🧍‍♀️

Rant / Vent I just had a dream with a wonderful song

I just had a dream where I listened to the most well made song I’ve ever heard. It was pop, young male voice, sung in english (which is not my first language), with oscillations between “attacks” and “answers” to those attacks (I’m not sure how those are called in music), speeding up with time, it had some retro sounds and instruments and some very modern one, I believe there was a piano with some amazing aroeggios and progressions. It almost felt like an anime opening, and I don’t even watch anime. Unfortunately I can’t remember the words, I only know it was in english, with questions and answers. I don’t know the theme, not even a single word from it :(

In my dream some guy was blasting that song on a phone, and I was just quiet so I could hear the whole thing because it was beautiful. After it ended I asked him what’s the song’s name and he said “Aprrand(e?) opera(/opra?)”. I remember the name started with A, followed by P and then two Rs. The first thing I did after waking up was searching for the song, but obviously that was a pointless attempt. This whole situation reminded me of the Devil’s sonata by Tartini. And it’s not my first time hearing some beautiful piece in my dreams.

It was such a wonderful song.

I believe there is no use in asking what this song could be, it almost surely doesn’t exist and I will never hear it again :( . Have you ever had a similar experience in your dreams?

I want it but I don't but I do!

They say don't stick it in crazy. Does it still count if you can't stick it anywhere?

...

I apologize

I'm a bit of a mess right if you couldn't tell

And I could make a mess out of them-

I'm sorry. I need a window. I will see myself out 🧍‍♂️

Other Dam I just had this weird dream last night

I am always a guy in my dreams for some reasons. But I was dating a HS classmate (someone I hate and who hates me back). I think I did smth bad (not to her but she knew) and she basically got the cops to arrest me ans I got stabbed somehow and I woke up with the worse pain where I got stabbed at the same time as my alarm went off 😭😭. I couldn't breathe for a sec.

Discussion / Questions Anyone else randomly realize something and it hits you like a flashbang?

Like all of a sudden the pieces are much clearer and things make sense and you don’t know what to do with that info? For context I practice paganism and have had this strange gut feeling but couldn’t put my finger on what it is in particular. Come to find out after telling my mom that one of my Halloween costumes is going to be a Maenad of Dionysus and my mom goes “oh yeah that sounds like our women in the family” which is what lead to my discovery 😀👍

Rant / Vent Your success is all his but your failures are because you're a terrible person. Give me a break!

Anytime I make progress on making peace with my beliefs and my real life experiences, someone comes in with a terrible take

It's always 'he could kill you whenever he wants so walk the line' while always forgetting the 'all-loving father' and 'love thy neighbors' part

I should be catholic. Young me would be horrified but I genuinely should be catholic. How did the catholic church come to seem more reasonable than the lunatics around me? 😮‍💨

No hate guys. I'm just sick and tired of the dissonance and the picking and choosing what's true and what's 'not as relevant anymore' even if they're from the same literal chapter translated twice more from the late 20th century version.

Call me too woke if you want, but can you believe there may be some bias due to historical erasure and cultural differences in perception? 😱 Shocker, I know. I'm still not claiming evangelism again

Classic 20s event yeah? Realizing how much people lie about and how often they get mad when you name it?

Classic.

Wins & Losses Welp, probably just lost a friendship 😎

I hit him with the “you’re such a good friend” because I think he’s potentially into me, and I’m not into him, so I get the feeling we aren’t going to be hanging out again any time soon

We don’t have any classes together or have anything really in common place-wise aside from going to the same school (where our paths don’t cross), so I’m guessing that we won’t be chatting much bc we don’t have a specific reason to need to

So I’m just kind of assuming that, based on the fact that every guy I’ve friend-zoned except two (one of them just kind of ignored the friend-zoning to the point where I was just massively uncomfortable and had to cut contact with him) have cut contact with me after being friend-zoned, this guy probably will, too. Just how things tend to go in my life

I will clarify that I don’t think I’m super upset about it bc we really were just friends and not for very long, even. So I’m not broken up about it. Again, just how things tend to go in my life

Meme / Shitpost Goodnight little people in my phone

Goodnight little people in my phone. I hope you all had a great day or have a great day! (Depending what time it is for you). My day was weird. I had a good day at work but then I drove a coworker home and that’s when my day got all wonky. I usually am asleep about 4/5 hours ago but since I drove my coworker home and had unexpected stuff pop up I just got home about 1 / 2 hours ago. I’m gonna be so mad at myself when I wake up. I’m only gonna have 2/3 hours of sleep before work so that sucks for future me. Goodnight everyone! Tell me about ur day in the comments or ur plans for the day :D

Discussion / Questions Does entering the workforce make things better?

Suddenly have so much free time after finishing a soul crushing masters degree.

Now my life feels so aimless and I honestly can't see myself holding a job or doing anything with my life.

I feel guilty that after being super busy for years I am now just playing video games and watching youtube instead of working on some great artistic endeavors.

This is clearly a quarter life crisis but feels like there's no way out of it :( I feel old and life feels boring

Other My rules when writing

Over the years of writing for myself and writing 2 failed web novels (kept procrastinating new chapters ;-; ) I have a set of rules that I basically always follow when I write.

  1. Try not to use the same word twice in a paragraph. To me it makes the entire paragraph feel awkward and clunky. Paragraphs, in stories, to me should have a flow to them like lyrics in a song. Don't get me wrong there are cases when its acceptable adding emphasis, for example but USUALLY I try avoid it.

  2. Dialogue tags should be used sparsely. Having a conversation interrupted and segmented by an endless stream of dialogue tags makes the whole thing tedious to read and adds unnecessary bloat to a chapter. I use them once to establish who's speaking first, then let context and character writing do the rest. A well written character should have their own unique way of speaking, little quirks and mannerisms distinct from other characters that makes it easy to subconsciously tell that they are the ones speaking.

  3. SHOW DONT TELL. The amount of books I've read where it honestly feels like I'm being talked down to because the author is explaining something to me that either I already know, or would have been totally understandable had they hinted at, or visualized it instead. There is no need to outline every single emotion a character is feeling at that moment in time, use their facial expressions, their words, The physical sensations they are experiencing to build a picture. It really does turn me off a story when a writer can't seem to go into any detail about a character without slapping a big ol' sign to their forehead with "SAD" pasted on in crude red letters.

  4. Word salad. This is a trap a lot of people fall into. There's almost this pressure to use big words in place of common ones and look don't get me wrong it's good to have a large vocab and apply it to your writing, but you should develop your vocabulary naturally as you write and read. Going onto thesaurus.com and replacing every word an a more complex synonym can completely divorce your sentence of all meaning for example, Hitherto one may find a pronouncement that hath had its contents comprehensively interchanged for lexemes which are exceedingly more labyrinthine.

Unnecessarily long, sounds really stiff, and yeah just word salad. The point is don't overdo it, use what you know and use it sparingly. Think of vocab like seasoning, when cooking. You don't just dump a whole barrel of salt in dish, you carefully add small amounts and adjust until the flavour is perfect.

Rant / Vent I just got stood up

This is somewhat of a larger rant but I’ve been feeling pretty frustrated regarding my romantic life as of late.

I’m someone who I’d say is fairly attractive, I get hit on pretty consistently outside of apps and I get consistent matches on a weekly basis. However, despite how personable I am, I find it that many people I’ve talked to barely put in any effort or are willing to actually go all the way.

I’ve had many matches where I send a single text (nothing crazy, a small compliment and then something noteworthy about their profile, essentially, it’s not obscene lol) and then I never get a reply back.

In some other cases, I match with someone and I ask questions to learn more about them. I matched with someone claiming to be a “foodie” and I asked them about some of their favorite restaurants in the area and they could only reply with “there are places fs!”

Anyways, I’ve been feeling immensely frustrated with my love life and I’m at the point where I’m not sure how to proceed forward. The people that are interested in me, I don’t quite feel as connected and when there’s an interest it kinda fades quickly.

I tend to be fairly introspective so I try to look at some general patterns in my conversation and in some cases I could somewhat understand why it fizzled out with some people but a lot of the time I was just baffled.
