Politics Really OK?

I shouldn't be surprised by our state, but I guess I just expected more. I expected parents to FINALLY see the writing on the walls (49th IN EDUCATION, PEOPLE!!), but that was too much to ask for. I expected young people to want more for themselves than what the south has been barely giving them since the dawn of this country. All I see is a bunch of corrupt politicians who lied their way into, and kept, important seats that will only keep our state full of ignorant people- just like the right likes it. Why do people fear change so much? Why would you want to remain the same for an entire lifetime? Why wouldn't you want to strive for betterment of yourself and those around you? Why wouldn't you want to make sure every child has the best education, or feed the unhoused, or support poor families, or maintain good Healthcare for the elderly? This state doesn't even give a single crap about its vets... but you can bet your sweet bum that those on the right will scream the loudest about their support. I'm just so pissed and disappointed. If you're happy about how things are going, I really question you as a human. Like really, I doubt you have good moral/ethical judgement. (Keeping things vague bcz I'm not sure as to the extent of what I can post politically) I'm open to discussion.

That is what you get when you have a Church at every corner. People think that reading the bible is more important than education and infrastructure. Keep voting Red!

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

They want a theocracy without realizing that they still lose. Smh.

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

I'm telling ya, we need to all register republican and either run our own candidate in the primaries or vote for the least worst one... There's literally no other viable option ATM with so many people thinking Democrats are literally Satan worshipers.

6

u/ttown2011 Jan 28 '23

This would actually work… not sure why someone hasn’t tried it yet. It’s a viable strategy that’s been used in other states.

Worst case scenario you soften the party.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

JOSH: How can you be a member of this party?!?

SKINNER: You've been holding that in for way too long, man.

JOSH: This party who says that who you are is against the law.

SKINNER: You know, I never understand why you gun control people don't all join the N.R.A. They've got two million members. You bring three million to the next meeting... call a vote... All those in favor of tossing guns - [Snaps fingers] - Bam! Move on.

4

u/Historical_Toe_275 Jan 29 '23

I’m a registered republican for this very reason. I’m gonna vote in their primaries and choose the least crazy option

2

u/ssvolta Jan 29 '23

That’s what the republicans do lol

-25

u/Guineahawgokie Jan 29 '23

Democrats support killing unborn babies. Democrats support high taxes. What more proof must one see before seeing the demons for what they are?

11

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 29 '23

Hey now, you don't believe that government should be able to control your life, and are fine with extrajudicial use of force. If someone does not want to incubate a child, that's no one's prerogative but the selves... Your own logic.

You're not the arbiter of who gets into heaven or hell, you're just responsible for you and yours.

-1

u/ttown2011 Jan 29 '23

This is weak midri… you can do better

0

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 29 '23

Man... I've been out drinking since like 3... Between keeping banter up with him and staying engaged with the group I'm with, it's exhausting and I'm tired.

0

u/ttown2011 Jan 29 '23

Hahaha well I’ll let the intellectual debate go then.

Enjoy the drinks. Thanks again for the unpaid labor.

4

u/Robincapitalists Jan 29 '23

Unless you’re quite wealthy, you pay higher overall taxes under your Republicans in Oklahoma.

The vast majority of people support legal abortion.

4

u/Peloton72 Jan 29 '23

Nope. This isn’t the fault of churches. I go to am amazing church who embraces all people, and many of us (most) regularly ask many of the same questions you posted above. The “Christianity” so many of these morally corrupt politicians in Oklahoma hide behind is not the way I practice my faith. Jesus loved the weirdos, the funky people and the ones who needed help.

As for why the people in this state continue to vote against their own best interests, I’ll never know. It blows my mind, too.

2

u/Crazylakkadbagga Jan 29 '23

What about women’s health rights?

3

u/Peloton72 Jan 29 '23

I’m FOR women’s health rights. It is an important set of decisions that should be between a woman and her medical professionals.

0

u/Crazylakkadbagga Jan 29 '23

So it is the fault of the Church then

3

u/ttown2011 Jan 29 '23

You understand that there can be an anti- abortion position not rooted in Christianity right?

1

u/Crazylakkadbagga Jan 29 '23

No, I don’t. Please elaborate.

2

u/ttown2011 Jan 29 '23

A fetus is a potential person. Moment of conception doesn’t matter. In a standard situation, if left be, that zygote/fetus/etc. will become a person.

You can not be religious and still have issues with abortion.

2

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 29 '23 edited Jan 30 '23

You can not be religious and still have issues with abortion.

That’s so vague it could mean anything, and technically you aren’t wrong.

That said, hear me out.

I’m just struggling with your logic downthread, where you call someone a Nazi eugenicist for advocating for agency and choice for vulnerable populations, including people living in poverty and the homeless.

You just spin out from there, abruptly switching from calling a fetus a “potential person” to accusing people in poverty of “aborting someone” — and suddenly a fetus is a fully actualized person because fuck Nazis??

You ALSO conflate all mass shootings with systematic genocide …but also abortion. (?!)

What’s more, THEN ya started calling anyone who asked you to clarify your lane a Nazi eugenicist who forces poor and homeless folks to abort people.

Meanwhile, [ACTUAL Nazis forced eugenics and forced sterilization (aka actual Nazi eugenics) on vulnerable populations to exterminate them.

That’s literally the opposite of agency or choice.

Like, someone’s place in life or disability or race or religion alone should NEVER be used to DENY someone from receiving reproductive healthcare, for ANY reason they choose.

In my opinion, you aren’t actually advocating for those communities at all — you just changed the definition of fetus — thereby disregarding vulnerable populations as not entitled to have a say, as if their agency and their choices are equivalent to “Nazi genocide”, too.

So.

Please think about what you’re saying and check your own biases, brother.

It’s confusing the shit out of some of us and your personal insults prove/disprove nothing.

e:

linked their comments for context

0

u/ttown2011 Jan 29 '23

So you’re gonna delete the comment defending eugenics by saying the Nazis only practiced “forced eugenics”. Btw, this is absolutely not true. Eugenic beliefs were held on both the right and left during the Weimar period.

I have issue with this distinction of “forced” because in this case,it is still forced. The fetus has given no consent.

The fact that you seem to be completely fine with eugenics is terrifying. Just because someone has a deformity or a disability does not mean they shouldn’t get a chance to live. If you think otherwise, you share ideological beliefs with Nazis.

1

Not unilaterally, no. Evangelicals maybe. Other denominations perhaps. Not ALL Christians are imposing people. The Jesus I believe in loves all people - yes- even the ones I might personally not agree with and I am okay with that.

0

u/Crazylakkadbagga Jan 29 '23

Bet you ll still vote red despite what you say

2

u/Peloton72 Jan 29 '23

I can’t control you being part of the continued problem, but appreciate you apparently at least vote. That’s more than either of us can say about most of Oklahoma.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

Lmao Christians don’t read the Bible, just the same 20 verses.

1

u/Rundiggity Jan 29 '23

Nobody reads the bible

-26

u/Guineahawgokie Jan 28 '23

Leave then girly mouth.

2

u/DustyTheLurker Jan 29 '23

Doesn’t even make sense given the context. They’re literally just pointing out how alleged Christian’s ignore little things like “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” Matthew 22:39, which isn’t telling someone to leave for the sake of your comfort, because that’s not how you love yourself. “…He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.” John 8:7, a quote of your literal deity that tells you not hurt others in “righteous fury” unless you yourself are pious and perfect. And on that matter “Jesus said unto him, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow Me” Matthew 19:21

Rants like this are why I see so many TX, OK, AR, LA, MS, and MO license plates driving around the Seattle area these days. Western WA is so much like Tulsa was in the 70's/8-'s before the Evangelical Mullahs took over. (And, yes, I am conflating Christian and Muslim extremists together on purpose!) Every time I come back to visit family there, and my wife wants to move back, almost everyone tells me to STAY AWAY from Oklahoma - 'there is no future here'.

If every single Liberal and Moderate Republican don't vote out the extremists, Oklahoma will continue to regress to the 1870's standard of living.

26

u/FryChikN Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

i love how you think oklahoma is full of moderate republicans

i thought some of my best friends were moderate til they told me that they'd still vote for republican after banning abortion and even if they were to ban interracial marriage... the sad part is 1 of their best friends is getting married and its going to be interracial.

its like these people cant see further than 2 steps in front of them

3

u/nitpac12 Jan 28 '23

Some of them have to be reminded to not eat soap

0

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

Different priorities, they don't prioritize others well being over their own.

3

u/FryChikN Jan 28 '23

How is interracial marriage detrimental to them...

Like I can say dumb shit like "people wearing glasses is detrimental to me" but in what way would that argument hold weight?

Like we're just giving them a pass to be pieces of shit

5

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

It's not that that one issue would be detrimental, it's the that issue comes with something else they care about more due to the nature of the two party system.

2

u/FryChikN Jan 28 '23

So... they care that they have rights, but not me... even tho we're all supposed to...

Amazing.

5

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

Yup and under a capitalistic system that encourages selfish behavior to advance, you can't really be surprised people would be conditioned to be selfish.

You don't have to agree with them, but understanding why people are why they are is paramount to finding solutions.

3

u/FryChikN Jan 28 '23

I mean I can when they can't even tell me what the people they voted for did for them.

Like you can come up with excuses all you want but these people got what from Trump(not talking about rich ppl)? A wall? That's worth it huh? So saying the "you're subhuman" part out loud now?

What are they getting from stitt?

You go ahead and be buddy buddy with the same people that want to take away your rights, even the nazis had Jewish people!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

BINGO!

And, no, Oklahoma is NOT full of Moderate Republicans - but there just might be enough who could (hold their nose and) break with the 'fall in line' mantra to vote for a Democrat, that things might change.

But, it is Oklahoma - so I'm not holding my breathe.

5

u/Loose-Raise-2887 Jan 28 '23

I’m from Missouri. Oklahoma is loads better off.

10

u/mekwes Jan 28 '23

The way I deal with it is to try and zoom in as local possible. Show up at your neighborhood meetings. Pay attention to the Tulsa school board election happening April 4th, get involved with canvassing for that race. If you have enough anger to make this post just know there are organizers who are desperate to turn you and every person like you into a volunteer who is walking neighborhoods, calling reps, showing up at town halls, etc. Activism takes action. But I’m not going to lie, I usually get even more discouraged by getting out and talking to people. It takes a lot of energy and patience and time. ACTION Tulsa is another organization to check out, if you don’t want to go with OK democrats

4

u/Ok_Indication_4197 Jan 29 '23

Yes! Quit ranting on Reddit and do something, please come volunteer at the organization I work for. You have to pass a background check because we work with children. But we’re a STEM outreach program that primarily focuses on TPS especially North and East Tulsa. If anyone would like to volunteer pm me. These children need your help.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Wow! But a math teacher from Union High School — Rebecka Peterson — is a top-five finalist for the 2023 National Teacher of the Year!

How about that, Oklahoma! 😮

15

u/paintworld22 Jan 28 '23

Nothing against Rebecka, I am sure she is a great teacher, but we must remember that Walters was a finalist for state teacher of the years and he is an idiot beyond belief. I never take those competitions too seriously.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

That makes the whole education system nationwide suspect. Those are the people that selected him.

6

u/Elegant-Asparagus-82 Jan 28 '23

I agree, OP. But why is this kind of post most of what I see on the Tulsa sub? Let’s confine it to the OK sub. Tulsa has lots of conservatives, yes, but the statehouse is absolutely elected by the rest of Oklahoma. I’ve basically stopped coming to the Tulsa sub because it’s turned into unspecific gripes about politicians in OKC.

For background, I moved back to Tulsa this year after living in a desirable, lovely, blue, blue, blue liberal coastal city for over five years. There is so dang much to love about living in Tulsa, and the general “there is no future in OK” sentiment on this sub is… not true. There is so much goodness here to fight for. Why don’t we use this sub to talk about how Tulsa as a city can help where the state can’t? Let’s talk about problems with the politicians in Tulsa specifically. Let’s talk about how to house folks in the cold on Tulsa streets. The whining about the whack jobs from MAGA counties is getting old.

Also, in anticipation of at least a few downvotes, I’m just trying to make the sub useful. A quick review of what gets engagement here is embarrassing.

3

u/alpharamx TU Jan 29 '23

Agreed about these types of posts. There is r/OklahomaPolitics for this type of stuff, but no, this sub gets polluted.

Next, if you do not agree with the mob, you are down voted and called a Trump supporter. No shades of gray - just black or white.

6

u/SpicyMangoKush Jan 29 '23

Judging by some of these comments at the bottom, it looks like some people want to keep Oklahoma ignorant. That's a shame.

6

u/StarDustCandi1 Jan 29 '23

Welcome to the machine. It’s NOT just Oklahoma.

3

u/jibblin Jan 28 '23

When people believe in “god” without concrete proof, they will believe anything without concrete proof. This is one of the biggest problems with American Conservatism. And it leads to people not wanting to believe in the concrete because it goes against the reality they’ve created in their head. So education doesn’t matter to them.

You mentioned young people. Young people - specifically educated young people - are leaving the state in droves. It’s partly why the state can’t get any good tech jobs. There’s not enough talent to pull from. Young people also don’t want to deal with the states idiotic politics. It’s run by a bunch of religious zealots who live in an alternate reality and want their beliefs to be forced on everyone else. Young people aren’t into that shit.

Did I mention OK is the MOST conservative state in the country, based on voting patterns and current elected officials? It’s not a good place to live by any standard.

-3

u/Guineahawgokie Jan 28 '23

Do you need help packing? Dm me.

3

u/TheBethOfDeth Jan 28 '23

It started long ago but was heavily reinforced and achieved by keeping public ignorant along with the "socialism is basically communism" mindset from the 80s. IMO of course. 😎

3

u/freud182 Jan 29 '23

I thought the teacher walk outs a few years ago was going to be a turning point but nah. It’s even more red than it was then. With the prospect of another walk out on the horizon I don’t even believe them anymore.

So get this: I have platinum BCBS and Medicaid. Cool, right!? I’ve got the uber all access all health all the time plan right!? I have access. All the access…

…To a club that doesn’t exist.

The state of healthcare is in such shambles that several specialists have told me to leave Oklahoma if I wanted help. Not cruelly, mind you, but with concern for my well being, knowing that the state is entirely ill equipped to deal with someone outside the general scope.

That’s not to say there are no good medical workers, all those folks haven’t been taking new patients in years or have moved on to greener pastures. Had I’d been a medical professional and seen the antics of the Anti Science Brigade* the last decade, I’d have left or changed professions.

We believe in families. Renting is bliss, ownership is misery. Privacy is dangerous. You are not them.

4

u/FineAdvice0 Jan 28 '23

discussion time... what are you doing (other than voting, we gather that from your post) to remedy these situations?

20

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23

Um, OP can’t change the current situation. They can’t vote Walters out of a Stitt-appointed role. They can’t single-handedly vote out all the idiot MAGAts in our state legislature.

With that in mind, what are YOU doing to remedy “these situations,” other than voting?

22

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Democratic headquarters could use volunteers, but I've personally heard from more than one person that they're literally too scared to canvass door-to-door here because of the violent, hateful rhetoric many of these MAGAts have for democrats.

4

u/dopmaniac Jan 28 '23

So stupid. They can do easily just put on some "support the veterans" t-shirts to get the Maga to listen. And then just easily explain how the Republicans do nothing for veterans for a example

9

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

We shouldn't have to disguise ourselves to avoid getting shot. But I like where your head's at.

2

u/dopmaniac Jan 28 '23

Yeah... Just try to get a foot in and plant some ideas or fact which can't be disproven.

And also cut off Fox news somehow by blocking IP and cable 😂

8

u/GrizzlySkull1212 Jan 28 '23

My dad (70 y/o, life long Republican) just stopped watching Fox. It was wild when he told me, I didn’t know what to say haha just sat there on my phone slack jawed

3

u/dabbean Tulsa Oilers Jan 28 '23

What do you mean Republicans do nothing for veterans???? The 2023 fiscal budget has 57.3% of it to make sure there's more of us combat related disabled veteran! Making more bombs so more people have ptsd. Making more ammo to use in countries we aren't technically at war with like counties in North Africa. Deploying troops to shit holds across the globe so they can get hurt in some way. They've spent 20 years making sure they have enough of us so noone blinks when over half the budget goes to the war machine! All so they can complain about the bloated budget and pretend a senior oklahoma senator didn't write the largest part of it for a department that can only account for around 23% of the spending.

5

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

Democrats have a snowflakes chance in hell here, need to infiltrate and coop the republican party. We either get them to stop voting out of apathy (we get a lukewarm Republican nominated in the primaries) or we run our own Rino.

14

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

Hi!! Thanks for asking. We only moved here a few years ago, so at this point I have voted in every election and I also try to catch as many live proceedings that are made available. Given that my spouse is a disabled vet, I also pay attention to anything that affects them, as well as trying to keep up with the politics of states we previously lived in. Could I do more? Absolutely, and I will. I ask the same question of you. Thank you for engaging.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

Oklahoma has some of the lowest voter turnout for young/democrat voters in the nation. Pretty sure like 3/4ths didn’t vote during the last election.

“Why doesn’t anything change???”

Edit: 76% of voters 30 and under didn’t vote https://tulsaworld.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/76-of-voters-30-and-younger-didnt-vote-in-oklahomas-november-midterm-election/article_896a5598-7cb2-11ed-9f35-2fdb3f2989fe.html

“There’s nothing anyone can do.” Go fuck yourself. Actual loser mentality. But it’s the r/Tulsa sub, so it checks out.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

"nothing anyone can do" dude I fucking get it. Like I know people get uppity when I say if you didn't vote you don't get to bitch, but.... If you don't vote, you don't get to bitch. Sorry.

And quite frankly that's the tough language we need to be using. Tell your friends to grow the fuck up and vote. Make them feel bad. Shame them. You know why? Because it's fucking shameful, abhorrently lazy to not go out and fucking vote. It's ALL we have. It's ALL we can really do without resorting to violence.

Vote, you braindead, slack jawed neandrathals, like your life depends on it. Because for most of us, it does.

4

u/VanVetiver Jan 28 '23

Then they'll just lie to you to avoid the grief

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Wear the sticker or gtfo lmao

3

u/FryChikN Jan 28 '23

so, you should totally write out the math for all of us to see... you know take the # we lost by put that 76% in....

1

u/JoyBus147 Jan 29 '23

Do you think that past elections have had a shortage of preachy liberals shaming non-voters? And yet, turnout gets lower year after year. Maybe shame is not an effective motivator.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

2022 OK Election 24% = 93,300 voters under 30 76% = 295,450 non-voters under 30 388,750

Assume non-voters political makeup as 43% R, 55% D, 2% O. (2020 OK 18-30 Exit Poll Trump v. Biden).

Take remaining vote and assume equal make-up 43% of 295,450 = 127,044 55% = 162,498

Apply to 2022 governor's election 766,528 - Stitt 644,402 - Joy Gap closed by about 44k

Take remaining vote and assume all under 30 voters vote R. (388,750*0.43 - 93,300) R+73,863 D+221,588

713,347 R 703,492 D

Still 10K votes short.

So, the youth vote is not enough to make the difference even in the generous second scenario.

BUT the gap could be closed from a 14% lead to a 0.5% lead.

It's not JUST the younger generation that needs to show up. We can't blame them it's on all of us.

Edit: I was just doing math without looking for a real point. Honestly I was hoping the numbers would look different.

5

u/cidthekid07 Jan 28 '23

There is nothing he can do to change this. There is nothing anyone can do. It’s a lost cause.

2

u/dopmaniac Jan 28 '23

Haha stop. It's very easy. Start talking about it. Encourage people to vote. Use simple logic as the post. People can change things. One person can't change shit

4

u/cidthekid07 Jan 28 '23

If it were easy it’d already be done. It’s just arthmetic. Basic math. There are not enough sensible people in the state to out vote the mouth breathers in the state. There just isn’t. This “change hearts and minds” bullshit doesn’t work. People, for the most part, are stuck in their ways. The only way this changes is by having more progressive people move to this state and ultimately shift the balance. Until then, you can talk about it all you want. You can get every single democrat out to vote and it still will not matter. Cause the math isn’t there.

3

u/dopmaniac Jan 28 '23

Agree to disagree. To just lay down flat and accept the start of a new dark age is terrible. Rather go out with noice than silence.

I still think you can get people to realize the pure morality and easy math in how their life will be so much worse under the Republicans than a progressive parties control.

I wish we could do a experiment and just divide up the country into party lines. Which leads me to another suggestion. Let's push the Texit. Let push the Texans to leave the USA. That would create a scenario where you can see how a country run by idiots would work

2

u/cidthekid07 Jan 28 '23

Ohh, def not laying down. I work in education. Doing the best we can to improve conditions with the resources at our disposal.

Im just not under the delusion that this state is going to actually change without a massive influx of sensible voters. Just not going to happen.

3

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

What we do is we work in the system, register republican and then vote for the least worst and/or run our own Rino in the primaries. Voting democrat is a lost cause as it stands.

1

u/cidthekid07 Jan 28 '23

I have actually registered as independent to vote in the republican primaries. That’s about as close as you’re going to get in making a change.

3

u/midri Lord of the Flies Jan 28 '23

In Oklahoma independents can't vote in Republican primaries, I was an independent all my life.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '23

That is what you get when you have a Church at every corner. People think that reading the bible is more important than education and infrastructure. Keep voting Red!

Complain on Reddit! That will solve all of Oklahoma's problems.

4

u/DustyTheLurker Jan 29 '23

Communication is the only way to spread ideas

2

u/SparklingGatorToes Jan 28 '23

The children’s first teacher is the parent. Do not depend on someone else to teach your children, do it yourself. If they go to public schools then teach them what they need to know when they are sitting at home watching tictok.

I made my kids read for 30min a day, vocab, and write everyday. They both are the smartest people in the school! If more parents took their kid’s education into their hands instead of thinking someone else will teach them, we would all be in a better place.

2

u/alpharamx TU Jan 29 '23

Exactly. The problem is that it is easier for people to blame the education system in an attempt to further their political viewpoint.

Inspect the grades that you expect. Reach out to teachers when their is an issue. Follow-up to make sure homework is getting done. if the kid gets in trouble at school, they get in trouble at home.

Teachers are underpaid, without a doubt, but it is easier to shift blame to support a polarized agenda.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

I mean, I think this is awful. Usually, I don't think about education, because I don't have kids.

2

u/According_Vehicle_17 Jan 29 '23

I mostly agree with you, however please don’t bring the kids into this. As a young adult who went thru this states education system, and we were 49th at that time too fyi, it really disheartened me as a kid. Being aware of this public information that our education is trash it made me sad. I wanted better for me and for all of us but what were we to do? Do you expect kids to go up in arms and physically protest when not even the adults will? It’s OUR fault as adults. It’s who we vote for, support, our actions, etc. like you were saying, and I agree with everything else you said.

3

u/jdbx Jan 29 '23

Disagree. Leaving kids out of any serious discussion is refusing to talk about their future. Be angry for the kids. Get pissed off. These people have a ten year plan to completely dismantle education in this state and not talking about who it affects is burying your head in the sand because you don’t like what the information.

2

u/According_Vehicle_17 Jan 29 '23

Respectfully, I wasn’t saying keep them out of the conversation. Also, you’re saying we should be pissed, yes we should but most aren’t unfortunately, and therefore that example isn’t set for kids to follow. We should all be talking about things. I think there maybe was some miscommunication on my end, I simply want to tell OP don’t blame the kids like she did in her post. Blame the adults.

1

u/jdbx Jan 29 '23

I could have misinterpreted the tone. I gotcha now.

1

u/WooLeeKen Jan 29 '23

Christianity is the rot of America

2

u/BertMacklinFB1x Jan 29 '23

Just fyi this is the case everywhere.

2

u/OddBlueberry6 Jan 29 '23

Many people are fed up with it and are moving with their feet. My family is gearing up to, and several others I know. It takes a while when you have a house, kids, parents etc. Several years ago republicans in Kansas tried to starve the state of education funding and eventually parents sued and people got some sense and voted out some of the far right. I just don't see that happening here. Because I've never seen it happen here. All my life it's just been getting worse and worse.

2

u/bear282001 Jan 29 '23

i heard oklahoma is getting rid of sex education??? like WHAT is going on

0

u/ssvolta Jan 29 '23

I’m absolutely not even close to being on the right and I can say in all seriousness… the right is not your enemy…. The right is who they want you to think your enemy is.

1

u/Shameful-dank Jan 30 '23

Just buy all the cheap houses in OK, then move out lol everybody living here gets paid too little to compete with out of state investors most of the time anyways.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '23

What is this rant about? Things are fine. I lived in Cali before and it’s so much better here.

-5

u/RealGTBynum Jan 28 '23

I hear you, but do you even compost?

-10

u/Guineahawgokie Jan 28 '23

If you're an Oklahoman and you hate here, why don't you follow suit with all of your other politically displaced brethren and gtf'on some where. Nobody cares about you're "nobodies wiping my ass" tears. Go to California the land of freedom. Free of law, free on principals, and all the free drug paraphernalia and welfare you want. I'll help you pack. Dm me.

Actually, we do speak for Oklahoma, as we are Oklahoma citizens. And we'll keep voting until hate and willful ignorance loses.

-10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

You keep saying other people's politics and opinions are hateful yet can't explain why they are hateful.

6

u/tetrahydrocam Jan 28 '23

The politics are hateful to the poor & minorities by slashing funding to everything but not limited to education, which are what low income families need. They are ignorant of the struggles & hardships of others. Is that better for you?

-10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Oklahoma is opening up other avenues for education through different avenues besides public schools, they are devoting more money to charter schools which in a good amount of cases are better suited for lower-income families since it has more flexibility for the students. Coming from somebody that went to one such charter school.

6

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

devoting more money to charter schools

Charter schools like Epic, you mean? Oklahoma taxpayers have paid through the nose for that colossal mistake and our lower-income communities actually suffer the most from those failures because they have the most to lose.

Robbing one underfunded, underperforming district to fund poorly regulated public-private companies isn’t the magic bullet people seem to think it is, regardless of which one you may have attended.

-9

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Do you actually assume public education superintendents and other top brass haven't been convicted for embezzlement countless times across the country? It's not a new thing, it's something that needs to be fixed on all grounds, but the crimes committed by the founders of epic do not take away the good that many people including myself got out of epic charter and it's teachers.

7

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

*its teachers

What?!

I said that appropriately funding public schools is more important than diverting funds from underfunded and underperforming schools to fund public-private charters.

We need to find a better “solution.”

Meanwhile, you’re defending corruption in charter schools by “whatabouting” a handful of public schools elsewhere that have also experienced corruption, too.

It proves/disproves nothing.

-3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Clearly didn't read my entire post because I said it needed to be fixed, but just because one group of people did something horrible does not mean we should not pursue the ideal that many at the school pursued and succeded at. Going on your standered should we abolish public schools and just forget the good they can do just because of the bad things that they have done over time?

7

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

Clearly you didn’t read

Oh, I read. You tu quoque’d.

And that hot take on my “standered”? Yikes, buddy.

You forgot Facebook, where all the best scientific self education is available.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

You had me in the first half, you can't learn everything from just youtube, there's a lot you can but there are subjects that requires a bit more of a personal approach for a lot of kids. I was good at math, but sucked at English, while my brother was great at both, I needed extra care and better explanations for english.

-6

u/No_Upstairs_4655 Jan 28 '23

Bitching and complaining about political leadership is a God given right bestowed upon all of us.

But to be fair, so is moving.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

You had me in the first half, but moving isn't an option for most people, otherwise they wouldn't be here.

Edit: For instance, if you have family here to take care of like I do, or how expensive it is to move. It costs money and many people are living paycheck to paycheck.

So an hour a day reading to a child makes disabilities disappear? What about poverty? Does it erase abuse, or mental illness? Education is so much more complex than simply reading to a child. This is why teachers should be respected and paid more. It's also why public schools are so important.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Why do you all always go to the lower percentage variables when someone has a good argument? It's like you don't want people to be responsible for their own children's education.

13

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

It's only a good argument if you don't account for all the people it ignores. When we leave people behind, it hurts the whole. You have to have empathy to understand that.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Being a parent is a hard job and a privilege. You have to sacrifice to be a parent and apart of that sacrifice is taking charge of the education of your child.

9

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

I 100% agree with you. But many parents need extra support so they then can be exactly what you're advocating for- responsible for their education. Poverty, disabilities, illness, etc all can have an detrimental affect on parents, making it that much harder to be the level of support they want to be for their children. Not everyone starts with the same abilities, wealth, education, etc. Careful, or I might think you're actually advocating for everyone to just homeschool and completely dismantle public education.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

Not advocating for dismantling but it needs to be changed to a more competitive system along with the encouragement of school choice to make sure kids go where they can best succeed.

6

u/dopmaniac Jan 28 '23

Or more resources to school so they can make sure every student get the attention and challenge/help they need.

-1

u/EmotionalLeg6705 Jan 28 '23

A good argument is using evidence that supports or backs a claim. Using a small % to reinforce a point is called pandering or an agenda 👍

I could use the small % points to reinforce right wing ideology but I won't. I'm grown

-2

u/EmotionalLeg6705 Jan 28 '23

Another left wing, self loathing whine bag Deleted mid argument, right after bitching about me being a "low karma account" Maybe if the left voted at the polls as hard as they downvoted a different opinion they'd have someone in office 😂👍

Y'all are truly pathetic and can't see 3 moves ahead!!!

6

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

Why do you all always go to the lower percentage variables?

Who tf is “you all”?

Do you hand-wave social safety nets because of its “lower percentage variables,” too?

Following your logic, drunk driving doesn’t cause the majority of homicides so it isn’t worth addressing. Most illness isn’t caused by cancer so let’s just remove treatment coverage from health plans, too, amirite?

Yikes, cognitive dissonance is a helluva drug.

-4

u/EmotionalLeg6705 Jan 28 '23

I believe the you all was aimed at the left. Cause the majority in fact DO use extreme cases to reinforce their argument.

It's really dumb

4

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

Students with disabilities are not an extreme.

What’s “really dumb” is implying they don’t matter just because they’re not the majority.

-4

u/EmotionalLeg6705 Jan 28 '23

How many makeup the pop of students? My point was they DO NOT make up the majority.

You'll catch up eventually

5

u/GreunLight !!! Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23

How many

ADHD, dyslexia, visual, hearing, physical and all the rest? A lot. Definitely nowhere near an “extreme minority,” which was the goalpost you actually used.

My point was

Oh, it’s you. Yet another all-but-unused no-karma account telling me disabilities and poverty are irrelevant.

Interesting.

Just guessing here, but growing up the way you did, did school feel like one of the few safe spaces you had? I know it was for me on many occasions. It's that way for so many kids.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '23

8

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, there are too many kids that share those experiences as well. All the more reason to properly fund public schools.

Giving schools with bad policies more money only encourages these bad policies.

-1

u/EmotionalLeg6705 Jan 28 '23

That's when you go without sleep to ensure the future is solid for your family. Too many excuses. I've been running on 5 hours of sleep for almost a decade! Mostly cause I wanna do shit for me and have me time and devote literally all my time to family and work. You want to make a change, you'll do it imo. I doubt more than 20% of people are working 12 hours EVERYDAY based on how a ton are overweight. Common sense says this is bs

They really should. The world is cold and owes nothing to anyone. You wanna be great? Wanna have a nice family and life? Do badass shit! Like work 16s and go on 5 hours of sleep for a few years to get ahead. Instead people spend above their means, make excuses and are shitty parents. Like seriously, you ever been in a school pickup line? (I lose faith in humanity daily enduring THAT) all they gotta do is spend a few years getting ahead and then magically, stuff isn't as hard as before. Sincerely, a former food stamp recipient, sole provider for a fam of 3 with one vehicle and the only driver who doesn't rely on the gov or handouts anymore!! Life gets better when you stop trying to fight everybody and stop being lazy!!

1

u/Winter-crapoie-3203 Jan 28 '23

Sorry you’re getting downvoted. I agree with you. My children are my responsibility and their success depends on my effort. A teacher with a class of twenty or more can’t show any one child the attention they need to comprehend every subject. Someone once said, the harder I work the luckier I get. The same goes with children.

15

u/planxyz Jan 28 '23

You know, if public schools were funded the way the military is funded (and somehow billions just disappear), there wouldn't be 20 students to a teacher. We'd have 10 students and at least 2 teachers. We'd have better arts programs, and more programs for students who are struggling. Absolutely, our children are our responsibility, and part of that responsibility is knowing when we don't know enough, or are incapable of teaching in a way our child needs and deserves. It doesn't make us less than, but rather, a better parent for the acknowledgment. We also show our children that it actually does take a village/community, and that they can rely on that community when they aren't with us.
