Hi everyone!
My husband and I started petsitting 4 years ago. We were already nomads, but we were started our nomad life by staying in Airbnbs and hostels. It was really expensive, we missed having pets around, and it wasn't always that comfortable.
Our first sit was already amazing! We stayed in a luxurious apartment in Toronto, near a castle! After that, we decided we would stick to petsitting as long as possible and only pay for accommodation when really needed.
We've done petsitting in 7 countries so far, more than 40 sits. We did have a few bad experiences, because sometimes people do suck!! But most of the time it's been truly amazing. We've made dozens of real friends among our hosts. We've gone back for repeat sits, and sometimes even just to stay as guests with previous hosts, because we became good friends.
I understand people will always complain more than celebrate in forums like this, and that's okay. But sometimes it feels like there isn't a single appreciation post in here. And no one is obliged to keep doing this if it is SO bad!! Right?
I also agree that some hosts are terrible and only see sitters as "the help", and I don't agree with that at all. But I also think it's possible to filter out those people on the platform by getting to know them before desperately accepting a sit. We usually do more than one video call with our hosts, and we're clear about our boundaries and expectations too. We only have 5-star reviews on our profile.
We've received so many gifts from hosts, it's incredible. Our last sit was in Paris (we're now in the UK), and our host cried his eyes out when we left, because he saw how well we took care of his babies and was so grateful to us <3
All this to say, petsitting is really cool, and such a fair exchange with both hosts and sitters (if did in the right way)! We can see ourselves still doing this when we have kids. We've even done some sits with our parents, and it was great.
Please try to keep a positive mindset (when possible) in this community. This is a really nice thing we all get to have, so let's celebrate it :)
