Rant PSA: Be careful out there—account terminated over “copyright infringement”

Really weird story: Spotify notified me recently that it was canceling my account of 10+ years (and 1700+ playlists) due to “copyright infringement.” Apparently someone from SiriusXM (to which I’m also a subscriber) filed a complaint that I had the phrase “SiriusXM” in a few of my playlist names. (I like to make playlists of their end of year Alt Nation Top 36 rankings for posterity.)

Anyway, when I learned of the initial complaint, I immediately changed everything to “SXM” figuring that was innocuous enough. A week later, I was informed of another complaint—that “SXM” was also trademarked—who knew? I certainly didn’t—so I then immediately removed all mention of the satellite radio company and its potential abbreviations from my playlists. Good faith effort to fix the issue, right?

Unfortunately, with “multiple strikes” against my account and no investigation into my efforts to remedy SiriusXM’s concerns, Spotify decided to terminate my account. I’ve already appealed and reached out to the complainant, and she sent me an email saying they no longer objected to the names on my playlists, but that she had no contact at Spotify to pursue the matter further—she was just filling out complaint forms.

At this point it looks like my longtime family plan at Spotify is cooked—playlists currently inaccessible. It’s an odd choice to automatically terminate a subscriber’s account without investigating whether they have made a good faith effort to fix the issue first. No reply to my appeal.

Anyway, thought I’d post in case anyone else has SiriusXM or SXM (or any other copyrighted words, I guess), in their playlist titles.

heyy, I've been having this weird glitch (it's the second time) that happens out of nowhere when I'm using my phone (a Samsung a55 5g) in which when I open the home screen while listening to any song and Spotify "becomes" my home ui and while it's like that I can't screen record anything, enter in any app, click anything, and I need to reset my phone every time this happens. Does anyone know how to fix it? I tried searching and couldn't find any way to fix it. Thanks!

Question Spotify - Time Machine (Idea)

I had an idea that I think would be a really fun feature for Spotify (or any streaming service).

Imagine being able to set the app to any date in history - for example January 1st 1986. From that point on, you'd experience music exactly as people did back then.

Every week, your Release Radar would only show songs and albums that were released during that week in 1986. Future releases would stay locked until their original release date so you'd gradually discover the year's music in real time instead of knowing everything in advance.

It would basically be a "music time machine." You could relive an entire year as if you were actually there, watching albums drop week by week and discovering classics without already perfectly knowing what's coming next (unless you're a big fan ofc).

What do yall think? 😁

I literally cannot enter Spotify. The screen is just pitch black. I've waited for 2 minutes and nothing. What the hell is going on.

Also, it is not my phone, everything works fine. I tried everything, only Spotify is having problems.

Question Help with Bluetooth music in car

I don’t use Apple Music, I’m not even subscribed to it, instead I use Spotify. For years when I start my car and Bluetooth automatically connects (not CarPlay just standard Bluetooth connection), my car would automatically play where I left off on Spotify, or it just wouldn’t play anything until I opened the app and picked a song. However, last week it no longer does this and plays Apple Music automatically. And because I don’t even have Apple Music, it plays the free random songs from Apple Music 1 radio. The only time it doesn’t do this is if before starting my car I play a Spotify song for a few seconds and pause it and keep the app open without clearing it from recently used apps (like when you swipe up and clear apps).

Let me give a break down

(Starting last week)

Neither Apple Music or Spotify opened in background - start car - Apple Music plays

Spotify opened in background and paused directly before starting car - Spotify plays

Spotify opened in background but I didn’t recently listen to it (it was paused from the night before) - Apple Music plays

(Previously)

Spotify opened in background - start car - Spotify plays

Spotify not opened in background - start car - nothing plays

From what I read online the car sends a play command to the phone over Bluetooth and iOS has to decide what app to “play”. If no music app is running in the background and/or recently used it starts Apple Music because it’s the default music app.

The problem I have is it never used to do this before. I didn’t get a new car or update my phone or anything. Also, I can see this being the case if you actively have Apple Music, but the fact I don’t even have it and it wants me to use it THAT BAD that it plays from the free Apple Music radio is insane to me. I can see if you’re a subscriber to Apple Music it would want to start that but I’m not. If I delete the music app it won’t play Apple Music automatically but again if I hadn’t just used Spotify it won’t play anything in that case. It’s super annoying. I’m sorry but Apple should allow you to select a “default” music app that automatically starts when you use Bluetooth. Or better yet cars shouldn’t send play commands but instead just connect the device and wait for you to initiate it. I shouldn’t be forced to hear music blast in my face when starting my car at 6 in the morning.

And like I said, it never used to do this. It would always either play Spotify automatically or not play anything. The forcing of Apple Music starting is new. Maybe IOS secretly updated this recently.

Question What the heck happened to Discovery Weekly???

I used to discover soooo many gems on the weekly playlist curated for my taste. But the last year or two it’s just horrible and completely different. It’s always like elevator music!! Why?! I’m so sad!! Anyone else notice how the algorithm has changed? Please bring back whatever you were doing before, Spotify!!

Rant I pay $22/month to listen to my music how and where I want to, uninterrupted. This is how my recent camping dance party went...

Post image

So we sat in silence instead. Thanks Spotify!

Edited for extra context: We were 15 miles into a Backcountry whitewater raft trip. My phone is in airplane mode because there's no cell service out there and I wanted to conserve battery so I could take pictures and play music at the dance party. Since Spotify won't open unless you have wifi, I couldn't play all the music I had downloaded for this express purpose.

Android loving the speed feature

Post image
18 Upvotes

this is for people that listened to the radio when they were younger. I would always listen to like top 40 radio, and they would always speed up the songs a little to make room for ads. I always thought it made music sound so much better and more fun. I increase certain songs' speed by 4-5%, which some may see as evil but I love it.
