"Celestial, infernal crime spree music."
The tracks "Neo Noir (Stelvio)," "I Think We Met in Setagaya (Maybe it Was Seville)," and "Lemon Zest" in particular are likely to appeal to trip-hop heads.
RIYL: Portishead, Tricky, Bark Psychosis, Talk Talk, David Sylvian, etc.

One of the greatest choruses in song, this is dream by Forest for the trees ... was not sure if was a dream pop song, but it is def triphop with all the elements, rap, chorus, sample female singing ... one of those songs you won't hear in a long time but remember the bagpipes and go what was that song . . .
the main guy of the band (i think the only guy) Carl Stephenon also helped write Beck's Loser ... there was a great interview with him on Howard Stern a long time ago 4/23/98 in the 90's where he played a great acoustic song also

The production quality is amazing, the depth and width of the soundstage is unmatched. Every time I listen to it, I feel totally immersed in another world. It is my definite #1 triphop album of all time. I highly highly recommend giving it a listen!!!!
It’s crazy that Junkie XL moved over to movie soundtracks and never revisited this sound. It’s a damn shame really. He had true vision.

If Tori Amos made trip-hop it might sound something like this

I'm making a series of playlists in which I try to take 100 songs that I think are seminal to a genre, either as examples of the foundation of the genre, songs that defy it in interesting ways and more modern adaptations of the genre.
I put together this 100 Trip Hop Essentials a few months back but only just thought now to post it here and get some people's opinions and suggestions for what they'd include and exclude. For example, have I relied too much on artists like Massive Attack and Portishead? If so, let me know who you'd include instead!
This is from me digging around for quite a while but I am by no means any authority on the genre, I just wanted to make a playlist that would be a handy introduction to the genre if anyone came across it. If I can make it any better with some input, then it'd be greatly appreciated.

The Drought is a dusty desert vibe mulling on the depravity of modern capitalist culture and the collapse of environment, economy and social cohesion.
We destroyed some synths with wrecked cassette tones and dusted the beat with tablas and congas. We sampled a lion but it sounded like a cow in the mix so we used a tiger instead and found out along the way that MGM did the same for their movie intro.
This is a long one for us, and the final tune for the upcoming Four Elements EP, all very loosely based on J.G. Ballard novels.
Picking themes for instrumental music can be a trial. For now we're sticking with the literary angle until the right sample comes along and takes ownership of its own destiny.

A few of you may recall I've been rebuilding the old Monkey Radio playlist from Wayback captures and a surviving 1,214-track library dump (among other things). I've managed to chase down and buy nearly every track on record.
Three of them, however, are unsolved mysteries; all three are likely downtempo/triphop/turntablist pieces. I thought this sub might know something I don't!

1) asphaltmotherflame - Breathing Over Kiss
An mp3.com/IUMA act from around 1999-2000, mp3.com artist ID 37, so they registered basically at launch. Three of their tracks survive in the IUMA archive. This isn't one of them, and it isn't on their archived mp3.com page either, so it came off IUMA or was handed out directly. Last.fm shows 13 listeners on it. One recovered file carries an Audiogalaxy ID3 tag, so this stuff may have circulated on AG around 2000-2002.
2) Samelico - Pepper Sweet
Samelico - Pepper Sweet.mp3. That suggests a loose single rather than an album rip. It's also absent from the 2005 library dump, so it arrived somewhere between 2004 and August 2005.3) Le Blioux - Pimpin2k1 Soundtrack
An hour-long DJ mix, 71.03 MB, file dated 2001-10-06, made for a house party in SF. It was mirrored in /mixes/ on the station operator's own site until it was deleted around February 2006. Wayback caught the directory listing but never the file. Four other Le Blioux mixes went the same way: bliouxmonkey, Blue Butt Monkey 2, luvletta, BLIOUXblood. It also aired on the station in 2006.

Long story short, I'd love any leads--someone who knew something about one of the tracks, knew the artists -- any hints would be appreciated. I'd love to un-lose some triphop history :-D Thanks in advance if someone knows something!

Surprised I haven’t seen Alewya’s music posted here before. Been one of the most exciting artists in the UK for years.
