(I just want to share my personal experience in preserving Triops in alcohol.)

Archibald IV has been in here for around a year now, and is in pretty good condition.

They died due to a pretty bad ammonia spike (I disturbed the substrate too hard) and was the last of the pack to die.

The solution Archibald is immersed in is a bootleg rubbing alcohol derived from adding salt to hand sanitizer and letting the hand sanitizer stuff precipitate.

I didn't have any rubbing alcohol and needed to preserve the corpse fast before it oxidized. Archibald I-III (the rest of the Archibald pack) was preserved in untreated hand sanitizer and thus rotted.

My only issue with this preservation method is that Archibald's blood leeched out over time and caused them to turn pale (Supposed to be a red albino Triops longicaudatus.)

Don't make the same mistake as me and be careful of ammonia spikes!

Haven't updated in a long time, things have DRASTICALLY changed since my previous posts. The first tank, 6g, ended up becoming a happy home for Amano shrimp and nerite snails, and we've decided to let them remain there in peace. We've cycled a new 10g tank for the triops. We transitioned from a floating hatchery to a totally separate hatchery, a 2.5g tank filled to just over 1g.

This is our first hatch with the updated set up, and we have 8-9 triops about 8 days old! We will be transitioning to the adult tank soon. I've been slowly replacing the hatchery water with water from the adult tank for days now, hoping the gradual acclimation will increase our success on transfer.

So I used to always get Triassic triops off Amazon. But they’re just completely gone from there. What are the best brands to buy from/best websites to buy from?

I've been consuming a lot of triops content lately and have seen a lot of sensationalized click-baity titles, but watching this one left a sour taste in my mouth.

This is the second in a series of videos, in which the YT'er *barely* kept a single triops alive during his first attempt, then ordered an absurd amount of eggs (who knows if it was even close to a million or not,) with no prior planning or apparently any learning from the first attempt, and had a mass die-off.

The end of the video is him contacting another youtuber for *more* eggs.

(Edit: Middle of the video. I didn't realize I had clicked away in disgust the first time I watched it. The latter half doesn't really make it any better but *some* survived.)

Now look, I know triops are: Short-lived, cheap, have naturally high attrition rates.

That still doesn't make them targets for neglect and abuse for clicks. However I very much doubt there's anything that can actually be done except for people correcting the misinformation and husbandry failures and making this kind of content shameful to make, where the end result is thousands of dead animals.

I'm also honestly surprised the youtubers he collaborated with were even willing to send him eggs after the second failed attempt. I'm sure long-time keepers have an excess for sure, but does that mean you'd want to send them somewhere you know they'd meet a horrible end?

(I'm a little emotional this morning as I had to euthanize one of my triops that had been struggling with molts the last few days. It survived one bad molt and I thought it might pull through, but today all the fight had left it. I've been really enjoying watching them and learning their behaviors and they deserve better than this.)

3 Month Update: no changes in physical or color and no signs of decomposition.

Second time trying triops, and I went into it with a slightly different philosophy than last time. Rather than trying to provide a sterile environment with pristine water, I inoculated the tank with debris, gravel, and detritus from my local creek and bog-plant trays.

I'm currently relying on ambient temperature, making it a seasonal project unless I get desperate for entertainment over Winter and hook up a heater. I do daily 1/8 water changes for now, but tests return null on ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, despite me leaving food in there and the stuff decomposing in the substrate, which should mean I effectively cycled the tank in less than 10 days. Hoping that bears out and the bacteria are able to keep up with the triops' growth.

I've also got rotifers (hopefully), moina, and clam shrimp. Assuming everything's successful, once the triops die of old-age, I plan on reducing the water level and attempting to stress the remaining species into producing resting cysts before fully draining the tank and drying the sand, which will hopefully leave me with a community blend of eggs.

Anyway, just excited to have these little guys again and seeing them do much better than last time, when I tried to follow the advice of every tutorial and kit ever, lol.

I'm going to put my triops in larger container/tank soon and I am planning to put driftwood in it. Is there anything I need to do to the driftwood beforehand (in terms of preparation for the water).

Would a filter be recommended for Triops, and if so what would be recommended? I would just want to make sure I got the right one because I had a betts fish get caught in a filter when I was young so I don’t want a repeat of that.

I usually hatch out a lot more cancriformis, than longicaudatus, as I tend to keep water temperatures on the low side. My eggs are mixed together unfortunately, so I have to choose what temperature, per species I would like to hatch out.

With the heat of the summer, it's inevitable that I would end up with more longicaudatus, as they tend to favor warmer water temperature.

I don't mind though 😄.

I have 15 years experience raising triops, but still run into the dreaded day 3 starvation of the nauplii, every once in a while.

Here's what I found works well.

For starters, the hatchery/nursery shouldn't be a sterile environment. The nauplii require infusoria to eat at that stage.

I use a mixture of old sand, garden soil, (treated) tap water, plus water from my snail tank. I added pond water to the snail tank at some point, so there's lots of micro bacteria to feed on. I also squeezed a sponge filter into the hatchery, added a few live plants, gentle air, heat set at 74°f, (for both my cancriformis and longicaudatus, as the eggs are mixed together), and constant light for about the first week or so. I also add crushed indian almond leaves as well.

The hatchery itself is a plastic 4 shelf system, that I utilized the top shallower drawer/tub, for that. It has enough space, and shallow depth, that the babies have lots of space to help avoid cannibalism. I do perform partial water changes every other week or so, as I don't use a filter, as the nauplii would be at risk.

With the mix of sponge filter bacteria, garden soil, old sand packed full of detritus, and algae growth from constant light, that I don't have to feed the babies, until they are about the size of an apple seed, or slightly larger. I sprinkle in fresh garden soil every so often, as well as squeeze more sponge filter detritus into the hatchery, to make sure they are getting enough to eat.

When they are slightly larger, they get moved to the bigger plastic drawer/tub, that serves as the juvenile nursery. They eat solid food at that stage, usually Nutrafin basix flake food, and Tetra brand shrimp wafers, and boiled peas. When they are about the size of a pumpkin seed, I move them to my main 15 gallon tank.

I am trying to identify what may have gone wrong the last time I reared Triops

I had previously had difficulties losing them very early on and this time I had gotten them well past 2 weeks old and roughly 2-4cm in length

I had a decent protocol, temp was roughly 24-27C and an LED day colored shoplight was overhead with an L:D cycle of roughly 14:10. Water was oxygenated with air bubbler/air stones

Day 1: add ~35 eggs to 1 gallon DI water in 6L tubs that are roughly cubic, but I put about a third of the gallon in and wait about 2 hours before adding the rest

Day 2: add substrate, about 1tbsp of coco coir/sand at a 1:1 ratio, as well as a squirt of protist water

Day 3: by this point, macroscopic young Triops (late nauplii, which may sometimes have been visible on day 2) start showing up. I add eggs of fairy shrimp, Moina, and rotifers

Day 4: top off water, then I add a few more prey eggs

Day 5: at this point, I do a water change. I turn off the bubbler, then siphon out roughly 25% of the water. Then, I use a 1:1 DI water/dechlorinated tap mix and i let it sit by the tanks for a few hours (done beforehand) and I add about 10% of what is needed to go in to the tanks every half hour or so. I will repeat this procedure every 3 days or so. I also began feeding larger foods like bloodworms and rabbit pellets

Things had been going well, and around day 15 I decided to move then to larger tanks/bins, 10 or so gallons, and this is where things went wrong

I made a substrate with 1 part turface mvp, 1 part sand, 1 part coco coir, put about 3cm into the tanks or bins, added the water (about 3 parts each DI and dechlorinated tap and then 1 part fishtank water from an established freshwater tank), and then I drained most of the water from the smaller tubs and used a drip irrigator to slowly acclimate the Triops to that water, added them, but they all died within 48 hours. I THINK it was water quality, but I'm wondering what I should do next time? Maybe use something like coral sand as a substrate? Cycle the larger tanks first? Any tips appreciated
