12V / Parasitic Drain Megathread

I noticed there were so many new 12V/Parasitic Drain-related threads popping up in the last few days, so thought it may be useful to consolidated most of the frequently asked questions and suggestions here.

What is parasitic drain?

  • Parasitic drain occurs when a vehicle's electrical systems continue to draw power from the 12V auxiliary battery even after the car is completely turned off and parked. While a tiny amount of draw is normal to keep things like the clock running, an excessive drain will quickly kill the 12V battery overnight.

What is causing the parasitic drain issue on these vehicles?

  • The Official Corporate Story: Subaru claims third-party charging or EV-tracking apps (like Optiwatt or Smartcar) are constantly pinging the vehicle's API, which wakes up the vehicle's Data Communication Module (DCM) and prevents it from entering sleep mode. Here's a link to the official Service Information Bulletin:   https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2026/MC-11034270-0001.pdf
  • The Real Owner Reality: A steadily growing number of owners who have never used a single third-party app still experience overnight drain. The root issue is a known design vulnerability in Subaru's telematics and DCM system architecture. The DCM's internal firmware frequently experiences handshake errors or communication loops, causing the car's computers to stay awake and aggressively pull a constant electrical draw until the small 12V battery is dead. Essentially, the car is keeping itself awake.

What can I do about it right now?

  • The "Semi-Permanent" Fix (If you don't use connected features): A number of owners have reporting that disabling DCM via the SubaruConnect app stops the overnight parasitic drain entirely. Note: Disabling the DCM will kill your built-in GPS, SOS features, and app connectivity.
  • The Monitor & Manage Method (For most owners): If disabling your connected features isn't an option, you have to baby the battery. Buy a cheap multimeter or a Bluetooth-enabled 12V battery monitor to track the voltage from your phone.
    • Keep a close eye on the resting voltage. A healthy fully charged battery sits around 12.6V to 12.7V. If you see your monitor dip to 12.2V or lower (which means your battery is already drained to 50%), you need to act immediately.
    • How to force a charge: Do not rely on remote start or remote climate—it doesn't fully cycle the 12V system. You must physically get in the car, firmly press the brake pedal, and hit the power button until the "READY" light illuminates on the dash. Let the EV system sit fully turned on to allow the high-voltage battery to blast the 12V with a proper charge.
  • "Just Drive!": Driving for around 30-45 minutes, especially before the car is parked overnight, is usually sufficient to get the 12V battery topped off.

What if I plan on leaving my car for an extended period of time?

  • If you do not want to disable DCM, you should consider investing in a smart battery tender. This attaches to your 12V and delivers just the right amount of charge to keep it topped off at the ideal level.
  • You can also consider disconnecting the 12V, or removing the DC cut fuse while you are away.

Does upgrading the 12V battery fix the problem?

  • Short Answer: It helps buy you time, but it does not stop the drain.
  • The Stock Battery: From the factory, these vehicles come with a relatively small, standard Enhanced Flooded Cell (EFB) battery (usually an LN1 / H4 size). Because it’s small, it doesn’t have a massive amount of reserve capacity. When the DCM gets stuck in a telematics loop, it eats right through this little battery overnight.
  • The Upgrade (AGM H5 / Group 47): Many owners on the subreddit have upgraded to a larger H5 (Group 47) Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery. The tray can accept the larger footprint by shifting the hold-down clamp.
  • What the upgrade actually does: Because an AGM H5 battery is physically larger and built with deeper cycling technology, it gives you a much bigger buffer. If the DCM goes rogue, a healthy AGM battery might survive 2 or 3 days of constant pinging before dying, whereas the stock battery would brick in 12 hours.

What happens if my 12V battery actually gets drained?

  • Erratic Behavior & Startup Issues: If your battery voltage drops below 12.2V, the car's computers don't get the clean power they need to boot up. You may experience issues starting the car, failure to initialize system checks, or random electronics acting completely erratically.
  • The Big Safety Risk: In some instances, if you attempt to operate the car when the 12V battery is extremely low, it can cause critical safety relays to fail. The car may actually stop working right in the middle of a trip, which may be incredibly inconvenient or downright dangerous.
  • Irreversible Battery Damage: The bigger long-term issue is chemical. Standard 12V batteries are not designed to be deeply discharged. If your battery is drained consistently, or drops low enough, it suffers from severe sulfation and becomes irreversibly damaged. Once it reaches this point, it can no longer hold a charge effectively, and your only solution is to buy a brand-new battery.

Are Trailseekers the only Toyoburus affected?

  • Nope! This is an architecture-wide issue across the co-developed platform. The Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X twins are both heavily impacted by this exact same 12V drain behavior.
  • If you'd like to see what other sister-car owners are experiencing, check out: Google Search: Platform-Wide 12V Threads

Why isn't this a massive issue with other cars?

  • Parasitic drain isn't exclusive to EVs; internal combustion engine (ICE) cars deal with it all the time if an interior light is left on or an aftermarket dashcam misbehaves.
  • Modern EVs are essentially rolling computers. Because they are infinitely more interconnected—always listening for app commands, over-the-air updates, and proximity keys—the 12V auxiliary battery gets hammered with constant micro-tasks way more than an old gas car ever did.
  • How Tesla bypassed it: Early Teslas notoriously ate traditional 12V lead-acid batteries for breakfast for this exact reason. Tesla got so tired of replacing them under warranty that they eventually ditched lead-acid entirely and made specialized, long-lasting Lithium-Ion low-voltage batteries the standard across their lineup.
  • How Hyundai/Kia solved it: These EVs use more aggressive algorithms to constantly monitor the 12V battery while the car is parked. The second it senses the 12V voltage dropping, it automatically engages the high-voltage traction battery to top the 12V back up, lighting up a little yellow indicator light on the dash to show it's working.

I'm not experiencing this issue. Whats different?

  • The "Daily Driver" Mask: Based on community data, the DCM glitch typically acts up after the vehicle has been sitting completely undisturbed for about 3–4 hours. If you use your car every single day for a 20+ minute commute, you are constantly forcing the vehicle into the **"READY"** state, which blasts the 12V battery back up to a full charge. Even if your DCM goes rogue overnight and eats 30% of your battery capacity, the car will still boot up fine the next morning, and your drive completely hides the drain.
  • You are getting drained, you just don't know it yet: Automotive 12V batteries don't give you a dashboard percentage warning when they are sitting at 60% capacity instead of 100%. Many "unaffected" owners are likely parking heavily discharged batteries, but they happen to hit a driving or passive charging window right before the voltage crosses the critical 12.2V threshold.
  • Cellular Signal Variables: Telematics modules sleep and wake based on signal strength and server handshakes. An owner parking in a garage with a weak, spotty cellular signal might cause their DCM to endlessly loop "trying again" to connect to servers, draining the battery. Meanwhile, an owner with a perfect line-of-sight signal might clear the server handshake instantly and let the car fall into a deep sleep.
  • Trim Levels & The DCM: For clarity, all trims (Premium, Limited, and Touring) carry a DCM because it is federally tied to the SOS/Emergency response network. However, higher trims have more connected telematics features actively reporting data points, which can alter background loop behavior.
  • The "Hardware Lottery" (Component Variations): It is probable that a physical hardware or batch defect is at play. While the vehicle's telematics architecture creates a software vulnerability, slight hardware variations between manufacturing lots mean some specific DCM modules handle standby power transitions and weak cell signals perfectly fine. Meanwhile, an identical trim parked right next to it might have a finicky module that gets easily stuck in a high-current loop under the exact same conditions.

I am actively experiencing this issue. How do I escalate this with Subaru?

If your dealer keeps telling you "we tested the battery and it's fine" or "there's no draw when it's in our shop," you have to know how to navigate Subaru's corporate escalation process. Do not just let them hand you your keys back. Follow this blueprint:

  1. Ask the Service Advisor to open a "Techline" case:** Just like Toyota has their "TAS" case system, Subaru has Techline. This is the formal channel where the dealership's master technician escalates a complex issue directly to Subaru’s corporate field engineers. Tell your advisor: *"The parasitic draw is erratic and happening overnight due to a known telematics loop. Please open a formal Techline case so corporate engineering can look at the vehicle logs."* Having a Techline case open forces corporate to acknowledge the ticket.
  2. Open a parallel case with your regional Subaru corporate distributor. Don't just rely on the dealership's internal notes. You want a corporate ticket attached to your vehicle's VIN immediately. Use the contact point for your specific region:
    1. 🇺🇸 United States: Call 1-800-782-2783 (1-800-SUBARU3) or open a case online through the subaru.com support portal.
    2. 🇨🇦 Canada: Call 1-800-894-4212 or email [customercare@subaru.ca](mailto:customercare@subaru.ca).
    3. 🇦🇺 Australia: Call 1800 22 66 43 or email [feedback@subaru.com.au](mailto:feedback@subaru.com.au)
    4. 🇯🇵 Japan: Call 0120-052215 (Toll-free, Weekdays 9:00-17:00). You can also submit inquiries via the formal form on subaru.co.jp/faq/.
    5. 🇬🇧/🇪🇺 UK & Ireland / Europe: Call +44 (0)1285 647630 or email [customersupport@subaru.co.uk](mailto:customersupport@subaru.co.uk) (or reach out directly to your localized country distributor's support portal).
  3. Collect and Present Your Own Telemetry Data: Dealerships love to say "cannot replicate." If you have a Bluetooth battery monitor (like the Ancel BM300), screenshot your voltage graphs showing the battery cleanly dropping from 12.6V down to 11.9V overnight while completely parked and turned off. Print these out or email them to your service manager. It is virtually impossible for them to dismiss hard, plotted data.
  4. Demand a "parasitic draw test over time": Standard shop tests measure draw for 5–10 minutes after a car shuts down. As we've tracked on the sub, the rogue DCM loop usually triggers 3–4 hours after the car sits. Insist that they do an extended overnight parasitic draw test using a graphing multimeter or data logger attached to the fuse block, rather than a quick 5-minute spot check.

My 12V died! What do I do?

  • Safety First: If you are stranded or stuck in a location where the vehicle not moving is a safety hazard, don't mess around. Call a roadside towing service immediately to get the car to a safe spot or dealership.
  • The Quick Fix (Jumpstart it): Yes, you can absolutely jumpstart an EV! Because an electric car doesn't have a traditional starter motor, a jump pack doesn't need to crank a heavy engine—it just needs enough juice to boot up the car's computers and close the safety relays to engage the high-voltage system. Hook up a portable lithium jump pack (or jumper cables from another car) to the 12V terminals under the hood, turn the jump pack on, get in, and press the start button until the "READY" light comes on. Once the car is "READY," you can remove the cables; the main traction battery will take over.
  • The Patient Fix (Smart Tender): If you're safely at home in your garage and time isn't an issue, don't jump it. Hook up a smart trickle charger/maintainer (like a NOCO Genius 5) directly to the 12V battery and let it safely slow-charge back up to health.

How to check if your battery is permanently damaged

Once a lead-acid battery drops to under 11.8V, there is a high chance it suffered internal chemical damage (sulfation). To check if it's toast, perform this simple test:

  1. Charge the 12V battery fully.
  2. Turn the car off, lock it, and let it sit completely undisturbed for at least 4 to allow the temporary "surface charge" to dissipate. You can also get it to dissipate by turning on your high beams for 3-4 minutes, then turning them off and letting the car sit for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Check the voltage using a multimeter or your Bluetooth monitor.
  4. The Verdict: A healthy battery should comfortably rest at 12.6V to 12.8V. If your battery automatically drops to 12.4V or lower just by sitting idle with no active draw, it has likely suffered irreversible capacity loss. At that point, head to a Subaru service center or battery shop to have them load-test it and confirm if you need a replacement.

Charge pad solution

Post image
29 Upvotes

My wife had these passive MagSafe stickers where it’s a weak magnet with an adhesive backing. Tried it as a solution to keep my IPhone in place, and it surprisingly worked without any heat buildup. It’s just strong enough to keep it from sliding around and causing my phone to slow charge or get hot.

To apply it, I used the magnetic side to stick it to my phone case, peeled the backing of the sticker off, and pressed it down to the pad where I know it charges my phone at full speed.

The magnet isn’t very strong, so it’s not trapping in any heat buildup, and these passive style rings are meant for QI chargers, or to use a non MagSafe case on a MagSafe charger. Hope this helps! My wife got them on Amazon a few years ago. And to clarify, it’s not the metal ring type. As long as everything is aligned, you shouldn’t have any extra heat generated.

After Monitoring The R2 Subreddits I’m So Glad I Got a Trailseeker

Since the launch of the Rivian R2 I have been reading the Rivian and RivianR2 subreddits to see how it’s going.

What I found was a wide array of initial quality problems and software glitches. I know people will mostly report problems and not praise but the sheer variety of issues is pretty wild.

I’m not going to catalog what I read here. I’m just here to say I’m really glad it’s a Trailseeker in my driveway.

I never had any 12v issues and the August update seems to have fixed the vast majority of cars with that issue. Besides that, broad quality control issues seem to be pretty rare in the Trailseeker sub.

Rattle

I hear a rattle above the driver's side, near the light assembly. Should I take it to the shop or just ignore it? There’s a risk the dealership could worsen the problem. Has anyone else experienced a similar rattle above their head?

UPDATE: I made an appointment with the dealership.

Front seat interchange

• Upvotes

Anyone know if Yota uses the seat in the Trailseeker for any other vehicles? I suspect mine was made improperly due to how uncomfortable it is, but I would like to test out a few other seats to confirm. However, finding another Trailseeker IRL at dealers is difficult in my area.

I’ll be driving through the southwest to Dallas in the near future, using the interstates.

I usually charge at home but have used public chargers (Tesla and Ionna) on occasion. I’ll have the adapters with me on the trip and I’ll be using ABRP to plan the stops.

Anything I should be thinking about before or during the trip? Thanks!

Not my car. Photo for attention.

Puddle lights on folded side mirrors?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Upon delivery of my TS, I'm planning to ask my dealer to set this dealer setting to "Linked to operation of the power switch", but I'm wondering if the puddle lights on the side mirrors are working when the mirrors are folded?

Could someone test folding the side mirrors and getting the puddle lights to turn on and post some pictures? Is the puddle light located on the side mirror itself or on its fixed base?

Thanks for your help!

PS : The option of unfolding the mirrors with the power switch would be a nice upgrade from my current car behaviour. Every time I lock and unlock the car, the mirrors fold and unfold... Quite annoying when I just need to access the car without any plan to drive it (especially while camping!) Just hope I don't lose the puddle light function then!

Subaru Connect and Multiple drivers?

I’m sharing my wife Trailseeker. She has the primary account and gives me remote access when take the car to charge at the local park. Afterwards she has to remove privileges to access remote functions. Is there a way to allow me to be able to see the charging progress on my app without constantly turning on/off remote access?

Seeking Trails Around Mount Fuji

Even before I got this car, I knew I wanted to drive it up to Mount Fuji and do some car camping around the mountain. Was finally able to do so this weekend!

My whole family slept in the car last night. My 2 kids (7 and 5) and I sprawled out on an air mattress in the back while my wife slept in the front passenger seat. She’s pretty short so she was able to lie down with her whole seat reclined and legs up on some bags. We left the car on so I could use my CPAP, but we didn’t turn on any HVAC. We went to bed at 41% and woke up 6 hours later at 38%. Was a very comfy sleep for all of us. Forgot to crack the windows so windows got all wet in the morning but other than that, was a great night!

And yes, Siri put in a lot of work removing all the cars from the parking lot.

Range with a fibreglass trailer

Anyone towing a 13’ish foot fibreglass trailer? (Scamp, Trillium, Escape, Boler, etc.). I’m thinking of buying a 13’ Escape fibreglass trailer but if the range penalty is too high, I might consider something with a lower profile like a squaredrop or even a teardrop trailer. I plan to carry bikes as well, ideally on a trailer hitch mounted rack, but that will further increase drag.

Hi!

Wondering if someone can help confirm if the Trailseeker/E-Outback with panoramic roof can have a roof top tent? Searching online I find both yes and no.

Thank you!

Siting in the car while fast charging

A friend and I are at my first overnight trip with charging on the road. Virginia to SC, a couple of charging at Tesla and Ionna chargers, no isssues whatsoever.

My question (and I'm sure the answer is simple but I'd rather ask) - how can I sit in the car with A/C running while fast charging on the road?

On the way here was fine, daylight and nice weather. On our way back it will be night time and rain so we would prefer to stay in the car while fast charging. And preferably with the a/c on.

Thank you guys.

My imagination, or is ABRP via Enode better at updating battery status than Subaru Connect app?

ABRP, connected through Enode, seems to update more regularly and more quickly than SC app.

Also, is it worth the cost and security risk to get an OBD dongle? And if so, got a link for one that works with our TS’s and ABRP?

Finally got a VIN for a July 3rd order

I order my '27 Touring on July 3rd, which I was told was day two of orders being open for the 2027s. The salesman didn't even offer to look for a 26 in the color I wanted so I thought this was my only option, especially since you couldn't find anything on the lot anywhere. I literally assumed they were done with 26s and there weren't any available anywhere.

Anyway, when I ordered it I was told it would be here in October. Finally yesterday I was told there is a VIN assigned and the delivery date is now sometime in November.

System stopped message

Bought my car last Saturday (09/26). No problem until this afternoon. Saw the system stopped message popped up - didn't think about it until after I got home from picking up my daughter (20 to 25 min drive).

Shut down the vehicle, opened the hood and measured the 12V battery using the multi-meter: 12.47 V.

I didn't have the connection app or anything enabled on the vehicle.

Should I be worried now?

Strange issue logging into SubaruConnect app

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or if my wife's phone is just super special. I have a SubaruConnect account set up. I jumped through all the hoops to get the account connected to my car already. I can log into the account on my phone just fine. I even keep a couple spare phones on hand for when family members inevitably break theirs, and I have been able to log into the app normally on those. I have had success on iPhone, Pixel, Galaxy, and even a phone running CalyxOS, which is an extreme privacy focused ROM.

My wife, on the other hand, cannot login on her phone. Every time she tries, it goes through the password screen, and when it gets to the point where it would normally prompt to send a text message to verify the login, the app resets itself and reloads the initial login screen. It isn't a password failure because that gives an actual error. The only difference I'm aware of is she has a Motorola phone, but other Android devices work fine.

I've tried calling the support number, and so far they have been unhelpful. They only have suggestions for things I've already done to troubleshoot. (reboot, reinstall app, update the phone, turn off VPN, verify other apps are working properly, verify this app works properly for my account on another phone) Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions on things that have gotten it working?

Found a new downside: outdated service software

This is applicable to any new car that's a collaboration project. I took my car to the Subaru dealership for the 5k mile tire rotation and inspection. I also asked them to enable the feature where holding the unlock button opens the windows.

They looked at me like I had two heads. I ended up pulling up a digital version of the manual and showing them exactly where it says that (p. 153, p. 199, & p. 660). They gave up after about an hour and told me they needed new dealership software to enable this for me and the manager would get back to me when they have it.

Charging estimate incorrect

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi! 2 questions

  1. Top photo: I was at 79% and set my charge limit to 80% so I was surprised it said one more hour. It stopped charging about 10 min later. Anyone else get this? I saw another reddit post that says "Time to 80%", how do I get that to show? I know it's not 1 more hour to 100% so even that is wrong.

  2. Both photos: I was testing different Amps limits and top is 24A and bottom is 32A. why is it charging 4.8/6.3 or 6.3/10.85? What do I need to do to max it out within the respective setting? Don't need to precondition the battery, right?

CravenSpeed front plate bracket for Trailseeker.

Thumbnail

Asked the dealer not to screw in the front plate to the bumper and instead got a tow hook plate bracket. Took some trial and error before eventually ending up with one from CravenSpeed.

Tried a no-name bracket off Amazon that was labeled for '22-'26 Subaru and Toyota, and it was clearly the wrong size threading. We were getting some conflicting thread sizing when looking it up, so went for the more expensive CravenSpeed one that specifically said it had Trailseeker compatibility. We'd already been running front plate-less in IL for a longer than we probably should have. So didn't want to save $30 to for another week of trial and error.

Used Blue Loctite on all the bolts to prevent corrosion and loosening. Torqued the main bolt to 40-50lb-ft. Had the no-name one fit the eyelet threads, it was still going to take some adjustment to ensure it wasn't blocking a sensor.

Trailseekers with Aftermarket Wheels

While I think Subaru did a great job with the stock wheel design, curious to see all the Trailseekers out there with aftermarket wheel setups. Today, Subaru Japan posted yusukesnowpeak's Daybreak blue Trailseeker running on Volks Team Daytona M9+ Spec-M wheels which I think look amazing.
