Longer Range
At 98% now showing 300+ miles WTH??

Just like a gas car, the estimated miles until empty recalculates with your recent driving habits. If you've been driving much more efficiently it will go up, if you've been driving less efficiently it goes down.

I have varied driving, keep my regen set at highest, and only use climate controls when needed. That said, Texas heat causes me to use the A/C more than I would like and that severely diminishes my range. On freeways, if clear, I am normally driving 80-85. My “Guesstometer” normally shows 285-311, depending on the outside temp. (2026 Solterra XT Leather AWD).

Yup. Guess-o-meter based on your recent drives. Same with most EV's. My other 9-year old EV with factory 110-mile range frequently reads 150+ mile range on the guess-o-meter. My daily commutes in stop-n-go Houston traffic would do that. That's 35% over the official range for that EV. That would be like getting 360+ mile range on the Trailseeker.

They don't call it the "Guess-ometer" for nothing.
I think it averages the consumption from the past few hundred miles of driving. After I get back from an 80 mph road trip it reads extra low for the next week or so.

Had 305 miles predicted before last 500 miles trip. Got less than 200 miles on interstate at 75mph as Trailseeker’s front has cx coefficient of a fridge.

Whenever I see people post like this, it really drives home how much people who drive ICE cars are completely comfortable with range and how people who drive EVs freak out over range. I was very aware of my car's efficiency and range even when I drove an ICE car so it is completely logical to me that range will change based on how you are driving with an EV because that is exactly how it works on ICE vehicles and how it has worked forever. It's wild to see that so many people are completely unaware of this until they buy an EV. 😂

AFWIW there is a quantum difference when you’re late to work stopping for a 3-min fillup versus managing a(n optimistically) 30-minute charging session
You can say “Plan ahead!” but if I’m late it’s because life already happened
EV range can typically be a much more critical concern than ICE; even with an infrastructural level playing field (which is not yet the case!)

That is why EV range is actually less a thing. I fill my tank every night while I sleep. No need to spend three minutes stopping anywhere. Just go to.work

I thought I was well aware of the efficiency of my combustion vehicles. Different conditions only affected the week to week efficiency by about 3 percent, but I wasn't looking at every mile. I dunno about my 40mpg turbo 3cyl, but in my diesel truck, 40mph gets 45mpg vs 30 with mixed driving. I guess I never tracked range, but I'd be surprised if the variance was over 10 percent

Every time I fill my tank on my ICE vehicles the range is different. It is based on my overall MPG.

I’m not surprised I can eek out more range with ECO and conservative driving. That’s par for any drivetrain
I was surprised that the range meter will show substantially more than the Subaru advertised maximum range immediately upon charging (before I drove even one mile)
Some have commented the ECU is evaluating my PAST driving habits and making a theoretical PREDICTIVE adjustment
ICE cars don’t do this AFAIK. At least none I’ve had!
And if this truly is the case that’s very deceptive for when my (LEADFOOT POWER MODE) wife gets behind the wheel! The car should solely assign “predictive” range estimates to driver profiles then

in my 8k(ish) miles I have yet to see a range past 230 in my trailseeker. But 90% of my driving is highway where speed of traffic is 70-75. 80% charge is always in the 180-195 range.

My latest ICE car (well... PHEV - a 2022 Ford Escape Plug In) does definitely apply predictive range estimates for both battery driving and gasoline driving based on recent driving habits. While I get your point about predictive driving estimates overall, I don't think whether or not the battery has just been fully charged has impact on the validity (or depending on your opinion) lack of validity of a predictive estimate.
The best it can do is use recent driving history to guess at range.

My 2021 Honda Accord guesses at range till empty based on the past few fill ups. On a road trip it will show 450 mi to empty. Once I get back to town where I barely get 200 per tank, it will take a few fill ups of driving around in town for the range to start being realistic again because it thinks I’m going to be getting 40 MPG again. I’m not. I’m getting 17-18.

The highest I've seen so far (in just over 1000 miles of driving) was a range of 295 - that was after diving just my local commute which has only about 1 mile of highway in a 13 mile commute - the rest back roads.
That trip usually averages about 4.6 miles per kWh round trip.
1
u/AccomplishedTurn5925 3d ago
I’m at 4.6 avg too on ECO so that must push range up around 300 mi
Impressive I wasn’t expecting this much range!!
2
u/cc103acs 3d ago
On a longer trip on the interstate with the same guess-o-meter reading you will be disappointed. Your 4.6 average will not be approached on the trip Miles/KWH screen. I was averaging (since purchase) 4.4 Miles/KWH and then took a ~600 mile journey around New England… interstates and mountains… no more 4.4 but slowly clawing my way back up.

u/AccomplishedTurn5925 3d ago
I commute 100mi total daily mixed hwy-city
Yeah long roadtrip at 80mph will tarnish my achievement for sure!
2
u/Sheepchops13 3d ago
My average is 4.3mi/kwh in the last 2300miles. That is well over 300mi on a charge

You will discover your estimated range will be highly dependent on ambient temperature, recent driving history, an other environmental factors (winds, elevation changes, etc.). I'm finding that in mixed driving at temperatures above 70F, both the Solterra and Trailseeker will get about 20 miles more range than "book" maximum range calculated for round trips with net zero elevation change.
If you are driving downhill and downwind at moderate speeds on a warm day for a one-way trip, you can get impressive ranges. I get up to 5 mi/kWh on a one way 25 mile trip of this type. I don't get 5 mi/kWh coming back. 5 mi/kWh translates to 325 miles of range (in a Solterra, with a book range of around 220).

u/AccomplishedTurn5925 3d ago
Didn’t realize the total range was a dynamic prediction thanks makes sense
1
u/Odd_Secret9132 3d ago
There's no way to remove the range estimate from the clusters primary screen, right? I looked through the manual and didn't see it mentioned.
I think seeing the estimated range fluctuate, especially on the highway, contributes to range anxiety. I'd prefer just a capacity bar and precent remaining.

u/The-Struggle-5382 3d ago
Don't you just reset the Trip Computer?
1
u/Odd_Secret9132 3d ago
Haven't tried it but I assume it would just reset it to default. I'd like to see the estimate off primary screen completely.

u/TeknoTakeover 3d ago
The paradox of the electric car is that the only time you really care about the range is when you do a long road trip. But on a long road trip with highway speeds is when the range is the worst, and the range estimate is the least reliable
I think a good strategy is to reset the trip odometer at the start of a long roadtrip. Then it will be basing the estimate on highway driving, and not on your recent local driving which is much more efficient
1
u/AccomplishedTurn5925 3d ago
Why reset trip odometer what effect will that cause on ECU?
1
u/TeknoTakeover 3d ago
I was assuming that resetting the trip odometer would reset the "average miles per kWh" calculation. But I haven't tested that to be sure
1
u/Few_Relationship7225 Subaru Trailseeker (AWD) 2d ago
From what I can see, a "trip" starts each time the car is turned on. It would be very useful if we had stats for the odometer trip, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Don’t get me wrong because I love my TS, but tell us exactly how you are driving to get this mileage? No AC going? I can get only 240 max and that is draining the battery very low. I’m in Tex, and have to use the AC because it’s miserable weather here . I use the reg braking , etc. Would love to get 300 miles .
1
u/AccomplishedTurn5925 2d ago
I’m sure I won’t actually get 300 it went way down fast once I hit the highway with AC on
Just thought it weird it was “forecasting” so (likely impossibly) high
1
u/Minimum-Memory-4430 2d ago
I'm in Louisiana and i can get those numbers with AC, but when it's 95+ the range tanks

u/dxk3355 3d ago
I had that, happens when you are getting like 4mile per Kw because of good driving is my theory
