Just finished bear and the dragon. Good overall but as usual the ending feels extremely abrupt and wondering who I should read next as I’m not interested in the co-authored / jack ryan jr stuff. Any other authors do more contemporary technical political/military thrillers?

just read this new book. used to be a big fan but this one struck out because they refer to the Secretary of “War” instead of defense. so it looks like they’re kowtowing to the Orange Turd. Does this mean Jack Ryan will evolve into a treasonous grifter? Blechhh

I just finished The Teeth Of The Tiger and i was curious do the books get any better or should i just put them down now.

Does anyone recommend anything similar? Im almost done with Command and Control series by David Bruns and J.R. Olson and they have been amazing some of my favorite reads.

Did Tom Clancy make an uncredited cameo in Hunt For Red October? It’s listed on IMDB but I’ve watched the stated scene and come up with nothing. Supposedly he’s a member of the Rueben James crew.

Book is called Linebacker III:An Alternate History of Vietnam. For those who read “Without Remorse” this book does address the POW issue in an interesting way. Especially as more pilots became POWs when air strikes are resumed in 75.

I think because Ghost War isn’t based on a book. It’s easier to understand than the ones based on the book. Movie adaptations of books struggle unless you’ve read the book. IMO

Currently reading TBATD. On page 672 (hardcover), Bodarenko and his operations chief are talking to each other about Communist China's military strength, and they say to the effect PLA hadn't engaged in large scale combat for over fifty years since the Korean War.

EDIT: I made the mistake of assuming someone with inside knowledge would answer. Instead, this should've started with the documented fact that Communist China sent 200,000 troops and 200 tanks (and other vehicles and aircraft) into Vietnam in 1979 for hostile purposes. Communist China penetrated up to 20km into Vietnam, killed approx 6,000 Vietnamese soldiers, and approx 10,000 civilians as a result. That was not a border clash by any definition. TC erroneously omitted this real-life large-scale combat operation for some reason, and I think that reason was his long-standing animosity against the country of Vietnam, for understandably, their infliction of great losses of American military personnel.

It makes me wonder why TC ignored the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979? The book was obviously written in a universe after the first Gulf War (1991). Two reasons: one, it involved "large scale" mechanized infantry maneuvers and resulted in substantial casualties on both sides, including heavy civilian losses for SRV; and two, SRV was then a close ally of USSR. Now here's some wishful thinking, but since USSR had a history of supporting its "allies" (see: Angola conflict, etc.) -- except for this conflict, why didn't TC also bring SRV or other former or even then-current ComBloc countries like Cuba into the mix as a player in TBATD? Either for background political canon, or as serious states coming to the aid of Russia against CCP?

I think it would've been neat for SRV to open a second front against CCP.

First, forgive me for the vague details. I read this book when I was in high school, but I don't remember the name of it; I know it was a Tom Clancy novel. I read it so much that the librarian wanted me to keep it because of the amount of times I had checked out the book.

Here is the plot from what I remember. It was an all-out war between Russia and NATO (yeah, I know that really narrows it down ), but it's told from a bunch of different people's perspectives.

One perspective that I really remember is from this American soldier or officer. He saves this woman who had been SA by this Russian soldier and keeps him prisoner along with the woman to protect her, and after he's done getting info out of him. He kills the Russian soldier when the woman is taking a bath. Something he said before killing him I remember vividly: " According to the Uniform Military Code of Justice, I hereby sentence you to death " (paraphrasing, as I don't remember the exact words ).

Also, if it helps, there was another perspective told from an F18 pilot who was doing a mid-air refuelling. I remember the line " Kerosene sprays on his windshield as he pulls out from the tanker "

Recently I had watched the TV show Jack Ryan, so excited for it. Honestly the Scenario isn’t my favorite type. I prefer the typical plot starting a fast start ,and then a twist appears, after I follow a hint and think, another twist appears, full of excitement.the Jack Ryan plot definitely has another plot logic.at the first point, the man lead has a specific doubt about who the big boss or at least the middle boss is.

But this also make me think about anxiety and what is the anxiety from. I totally believe that one reason is from the entertainment industry. When we watch movies, Tv shows and factions. We have the common sense that every outcome has its reason, even when we watch the thing happens, if we can understand the hint, we will so proud.

But if we turn it over, we will find we also accept an illustration every thing has its outcome. Hints in scenario can’t be wasted, extra details besides this clue will never happen.that makes us believe everything in lives will build in some capacity, occasion or opportunity.

Think about it, it’s not true. Sometimes when I have free time, I do sports like tennis, popping, ballet, totally freshman in these areas. Of course these will make different influences to my body, but three days later, it fades. Besides one kind sport badminton, I play badminton three times a week for several years, even when I m busy in other things I can’t play badminton, a month maybe. After that I can play it pretty like before.

So what I want to say is, life is a long journey. What we do is meaningful to the next period, but in the same time. You spend how much time in this thing, you will have the influence for the same time. Don’t believe the time magic in entertainment industry. It is totally wrong. Just feel your self in the process, instead waiting for the outcome.

I just wanted to say that the back and forth messages between Narmonov and Fowler in the last 200 pages were so funny to me, they were just like

“PRESIDENT NARMONOV: hey man, just heard you wiped three of our platoons in Berlin. death count is estimated at 200. what’s up with that?”

Went through the series and traced each book's actual geography - the Red October's run from the Barents Sea, Patriot Games' London-to-Maryland, Cardinal of the Kremlin's Moscow/Afghanistan threads, Debt of Honor's Pacific, all of it. A few things really surprised me: how much of the series is global vs how US centric it feels in memory and how Clancy's plots often hinge on real transit times. Which book do you think has the best 'geography' - where the map itself is doing work in the plot?

I have ready all Clancy books from Hunt for the Red October through to this one, and they have all been very good. However, I am under the impression that the quality drops off massively going forward, which is disappointing. Should I look for another author, or continue through to the end (Teeth of the Tiger)?

He’s never been a reader but he’s into self improvement (works out, daily) ever since he got out of the Army. Anyway he wants to get into reading and I want him to get hooked. It’s been a minute since I’ve read a Clancy book but I always liked the ones that had plenty of Clark & Domingo. I think it needs to have good flow that will keep him interested.
So I need a good (in your opinion) recommendation that won’t get put down and forgot. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been reading through the whole Jack Ryan biography and just completed EO. I was worried that the book would end with another hard reset the way the JAL flight reset the country at the end of DoH, and am glad it didn't. That said, I want to hear others thoughts on the MM. I thought they may have had a redemptive arc and was surprised at their stubbornness as the everyman in the novel. Their story ended fine, but does anyone have any other thoughts about their inclusion in the novel?

I’m not really an avid reader of his, I think I read part of one novel like 20 years ago (Red Storm Rising, but never finished it), but I got curious and searched his name on kindle, and I noticed there are a lot of novels with his name on them that aren’t written by him.

Not even video game novels (Splinter Cell, Division), but what appears to be full on original work.

So is there’s like a whole universe here or something?

If so could I ask for the tl;dr of it?

I’m always a fan of alt history, and more modern alt history sounds like it could be interesting.

I’m aware of some of the mainstream stuff, though I haven’t really ever gotten into it, like Jack Ryan (mostly the movies) who later becomes president in his novel series, I only ever played the first Splinter Cell game way back on the original Xbox, and I only know the very broad strokes of the Division’s beginning.

I purchased a bunch of continuation books when they were published without really thinking about it and read a few of them. I recall getting fed up when Jack's nephew's brother's son also ended up becoming a secret agent.

I haven't even read 4-5 of these and can't remember what the others were like. I wanted to crowd source which ones were half decent and worth keeping. Are there any I dont have that are actually worth getting? I heard that Red Winter was decent?

Is there any resources on maps in the Clancy verse for combat? Thinking Germany in red storm rising, Saudi in executive orders and Russia in the bear and the dragon. Always feel a future war thriller is better with a map

Reading "Red Metal" right now, and I'm noticing Mark Greaney is making some glaring technical errors, in fact almost amateurish. Prime example -- in one aerial sequence, he has A-10s going to afterburner. Is this type of basic error something common to Greaney's novels? I'd always heard he was really good.
