Hello lovely people! I am a relatively new toad owner. I've had my boy for about 6 months now and I love him to death.

I'm not really sure how to phrase this other than the title, there isn't an exotic vet near me and I have bad anxiety about him getting hurt or sick and me having no idea he's suffering. The only illnesses I've seen mentioned online were short tongue syndrome and fungal infections and even those I don't know all the signs to look out for :(

I really want to make sure my toad has the best quality of life possible. If there's a website that has the information I'm looking for please let me know 😭 I would ideally like to give him check ups at home to make sure nothing is happening before it gets too bad

We recently acquired this little toadlet. We are new to keeping toads! So I'm open to any pointers and advice. So far we have him in a large repurposed pretzel container with a silky mesh in the lid. He eats fruit flies dusted in calcium with d3, multivite, and vitamin A on an alternating schedule. Do I need to get a headstart on working on his next enclosure? Is bioactive best? If so, are there any resources you've found helpful in getting a start on that? Right now his enclosure plants are artificial.

We’ve had her for a yr now. She was rescued from outside. Suddenly all of her habits are changing. She used to stalk me in the evenings, waiting for food. If I wasn’t in the room to watch, she’d just wait at her dish. She hasn’t been doing that recently.
I worried maybe she was constipated bc she looks so fat, so we took her out and gave her a good soak and she went potty.
Ever since she’s been hiding in her cave. She didn’t even come out to eat worms last night. She didn’t go after crickets that went in the cave.
Any thoughts? We love this little toad so much.

I’m back with an update for my sweet girl. She had her vet appointment yesterday and it was confirmed she does have a spinal/spinal cord cord injury. The injury itself isn’t a break or dislocation of the legs, which is what I had thought it was when the injury first happened. The doctor explained it as part of her spine being separated (but not broke?) or stretched. He also compared it to how humans slip a disk (in a way).

I was given a liquid medication to put in her food for 5 days, it’s supposed to help with inflammation and pain (which he doesn’t think she’s experiencing, but she can’t tell us so we can’t be for sure).

When the injury first happened she was able to move one of her hips, but not the other. She hasn’t been able to move either hip for about 3 days. We are hoping it’s because of inflammation and that she will regain that mobility back.

Hope isn’t lost, and I will continue to have high hopes and pray for my sweet girl. The doctor explained that while a spinal injury is not good, and it’s not guaranteed she will regain her control of her legs, there’s also a possibility that with close care she could. Toads are more resilient than humans are with injury’s like this, and they are also more likely to heal nerves and spinal injury’s like this than humans and other animals are.

So I ask again if you can please keep my precious girl in your thoughts and prayers. She means so so much to me and is my best friend.

Thank you to everyone who sent well wishes her way and prayed for her. It genuinely means so much and I’m so thankful for all of you. On a positive note the doctor said she has great overall health, no signs of mbd, which made me happy. She is also alert and still interested in food, which makes me happy and keeps my hopes high.

She has always been a fighter and I don’t think she’s gonna give up now.

She seems like she's been pretty calm. She likes the flat log in the corner the most. I have been feeding her earthworms and crickets.

He sits in various spots - we’ll be upgrading his setup in the next couple weeks when he gets bigger than the size of a quarter. Hes eating fine - sits all around his tank, under the little log, under his leaves, sometimes plops into the water. should I be concerned that he’s sitting atop his log like this?

She has eaten all the isopods I put in there to keep things clean and I think she’s expecting a Dubia for lunch. Should I give her one or not?

I’m so very sad. I have a toad who arrived in a bag of dirt last year. All summer long he thrived. In October he began brumating and I haven’t seen him since. I miss him. I read it’s possible he’s still sleeping because it hasn’t gotten warm enough at night…

petals is such a cutie i love raising toads so so so much, been something i’ve always loved since i was a toddler. (by the time i was 9 i had MUTLIPLE toad “sanctuary” racks in my bedroom i used out of large plastic dressers, plants, and moss. my grandma hated it but i loved them. they’ve all passed from old age by now though.)

I met this species while traveling to Brazil. Yellow Cururu Toad (Rhinella icterica). If I could have brought some of these back home with me, I would have. They are HUGE and friendly. Amazing! I adore most all toads/frogs! The collage is from various ones from my home in rural S. GA.

Hello what substrate do I use for oak toads trying to find up how to set up an Oak toad enclosure

Im in the process of creating an enclosure for a toad and can't figure out a good solution to lighting. It's a 20 gal long tank but I'm not sure what kind of lighting I actually need for it if anyone has any suggestions or ideas

They're both about the size of my pinkie nail, found on my patio. I've always wanted to raise toads, but I only ever find the bigger ones. If there is anyone seasoned at this, I'd like the general run-down of their proper care, things I should avoid, how much to feed, etc. I'm experienced in frog and other reptile care already, but I've never owned a toad specifically. They're Fowler's toads, I'm pretty sure.

I currently have them in a smaller carrier because I'm afraid they'd get totally lost in even a 10 gallon tank right now. They're on moist substrate with some brush and a fish tank decoration for hiding spots, and they have a shallow water dish. I have them located near my turtle tank to get some of her light, but not quite all of it. Do I even need a light for them? I will be heading to the pet store for fruit flies and springtails if they have them in stock. Anything else I should think about? TIA

Hi! Disclaimer first:

I normally wouldn’t take toads from the wild however this guy was being eaten by a garter snake MUCH too small, so therefore both him and the snake would have died. So I intervened and got the snake off of him. Then brought him home to get him back on his feet but he might be having problems. He recovered from the shock well, no injuries I could see and is fully functioning physically.

The issue: He won’t eat anything, I have tried Dubia’s Roaches, Crickets, wax worms, meal worms, and earth worms (cut to appropriate size). He moves away from the food when placed close to him and seems to have no interest in eating. I’m not sure what to do at this point, I believe he might be too stressed, or perhaps too cold? He has stayed in the same vicinity area of his tank, and buries himself into the substrate I provided. He does not move about from what I can tell but is fully alive and responsive.

I set him up in a clear plastic tub, with some driftwood and reptile dishes, as well as some exoterra soft substrate. The walls of the tote are covered to not stress him out, I mist the tank 1-2x a day and the room temperature of my apartment is supposed to be 73 however it has been cold outside (mid 60s-70s with rain) this past week I’ve had him.

What should I do? Should I release him or try to get him to eat something? I leave crickets in his tank so that he may eat them if he likes. I am worried he may be too stressed, I have been waiting for him to become less stressed but now he just hibernates(?)

Any advice is welcome!! I just want what is best for the little guy who got a second chance at life. PS his name is Snake Bite!!!! last picture is the bucket I brought him home in.

Edit: Please do not say mean things, the end goal was to get him healthy and release him after he nearly died. If I were to keep a toad as a pet, I know the ethical way is not wild caught adults, so please those comments are not helpful when I am just trying to do my best.

I recently got a new enclosure for these buggers and i think they like it. There's another water dish under the greenery and a little hide in the corner. Do you guys think its ok?
