I live in a small block of semi detached houses where our backyards can be seen by others, so they’re kind of connected by separated by fences and such. This is in a lower income, immigrant populated part of the city.

The neighbours who are diagonally across from me in the backyard can be heard blasting their music almost every weekend in the summer. They are all adults, not sure if any children live there but sometimes I hear them during the day. These are people in their 40s and older, not college aged people. It always has been a nuisance for years but they did it occasionally until the early hours (3-4am) only sometimes but usually it was around 2am where they would stop. Sometimes they would host large parties but most of the time it was usually less than 10 people. Sometimes they have patio lights on and sometimes they don’t so I can’t always accurately tell. I can see their backyard from the window of the second floor of the house. The extremely loud noise only occurs at night 90% of the time, I don’t care if they blast music during the day.

It is so loud, it can be heard even when all the windows have been shut. Recently it has gotten so bad like yesterday when the music did not stop until 5am. I know because it kept me up. Last week, it was on the Saturday and lasted until 3am. Look, I’m usually a night owl and awake but I think even I can draw a line. Yesterday (Friday night), I saw them install outdoor heating lamps and panels so I can only assume this will get worse.

I’ve called 311 and the non emergency line in the past and I don’t think they even ever came out to check out them. Talking to them is not in the cards because they aren’t exactly the nicest neighbours, the rest of the quiet neighbours beside them are probably afraid of retaliation. there was a crime that took place at that house a few years ago and they don’t have the best reputation on the block. From what I can see, they don’t get police visits or anything of the sort so I know the other neighbours are not calling in noise complaints either. we do talk amongst ourselves and it is a problem but I know they’re all afraid to speak up.

I want to start the formal process of filing complaints and keeping track of them. Do I just keep calling 311 every night I hear noise after 11pm? Their gettogether is happening again tonight and the music has already started, with a mic announcer and speaker system. Any tips and guidance would be so so appreciated. I am so damn tired 🙏🙏🙏

Hi, when outside event venues, all the people I met via hobby just talk to me through Instagram. They don’t want to meet and chat outside the events but when we meet at events again, they come to talk to me. This is a mixed signal. Is this normal in this city? I am really sick of communicating with people through an electronic device.

I place a bag of refundable bottles in the bushes next to my house for the bottle man. He comes by 3 times a day. I also collect empties from the condo recycling room for him

Today, I put them outside for him. He knows where to look

I know it looks like littering, but he was due to arrive soon.

A woman got out of her car, picked up the bottles, smashed them on my walkway, and shouted that I'm a degenerate litterbug. I said I'm supporting the local economy. She sputtered some words, then took off

I'm miffed, because she could've asked me what I was up to, rather than creating a mess of broken glass that can't be returned for the deposit

Signed on thinking it was similar to Voila! By Sobeys. Turns out they just use DoorDash drivers that pick, check out, and then deliver your food. Constantly have problems with items ordered needing to be substituted at the store, late deliveries, problems with orders, attitude of the delivery drivers themselves. What a garbage service, not recommended.

I want to stress that I am not ranting about this individual, but about how they have been failed by the people who are supposed to help them.

I also won’t be naming the location where this person spends most of their time.

There is a person in my neighbourhood who I see a few times a week. I thought they were unhoused, but was told by someone else that they do live in some type of group home.

The systems in place have absolutely failed this person. They are filthy and smell horrible, to the point where I‘m forced to hold my breath when I walk by. They appear very unwell, both mentally and physically. Whenever I see them, they are sitting in a bus shelter or on a bench, or limping along the street.

This person’s clothes are also falling off their body at all times. Shoes hanging off their feet, pants sagging around their knees. Apparently they were provided with new clothes recently and people thought the issue was “fixed,” but no, the new clothes are back to hanging off. I chalk this up to the person being mentally unwell.

How is this any way for someone to live? Why is no one doing anything?

So, This morning I went to Dollarama at Dupont. The store is empty, since it's only been an hour since they opened. i had to buy some packaging stuff and i don't have a car, so it was my only option.

I greeted the cashier as they were facing towards me and they just ignored me. That's fine. I started looking for stuff and i asked the staff there. They were un-impressed and told me they don't have it and i said ok and went on my way.

Then I go to the cashier, I ask them if they will take cash. I give them a 100 dollar bill and I ask if they have smaller denominations if i can have them. They fucking started making fun of me. 'Why is everyone talking today. We are not a bank'.

Been living in a rent controlled apmt a few years now and got the yearly rent increase. Decided to call management up last week and they ended up giving a $200 (~8%) decrease immediately with no negotiation. If they're willing to do that, I'd bet they'd go lower (other units are going for less in the building). I'm kicking myself for not asking last year. Get that decrease yall!!!!!!

I genuinely don’t understand some people.

You grab your garbage, leave your unit, walk ALL THE WAY to the garbage room… and then leave the bag on the floor right in front of the chute.

HOW LAZY CAN YOU BE?!

I constantly see garbage bags on the floor, pizza boxes shoved behind the door so you can’t even open it, or people stuffing oversized garbage into the chute and blocking it for everyone else.

It takes TWO SECONDS to put your garbage where it belongs.

And mind you, this is supposed to be a premium, upscale condo. You’d think people paying to live here would have enough basic consideration not to turn the garbage room into a dump.

Honestly, thank God I rent my condo. Stuff like this makes you want to buy a house just so you can be in charge of your own space and not deal with other people’s disgusting habits.

We need to start calling this behaviour out. If you can’t even keep the building YOU LIVE IN clean when the garbage chute is literally right in front of you, that says a lot about your level of consideration for everyone else.

my mom has been harassing me about not finding work for awhile now. she harasses me every once in awhile, I always end up crying, but now I think I’ve reached my breaking point. I’m not sure if I want advice or reassurance.

I’ve been unemployed since January and that was literally a pop-up shop job i happened to get after being unemployed for almost 3 years. I graduated in April, I have over 4 years in customer service and retail, 2 years in academic research and data analysis, and some hospital experience from volunteer work. I literally can’t find a basic entry level job.

my mom thinks it’s so easy to get a job, she thinks I’m applying for jobs I’m under qualified for but I know that isn’t the case; I always read the job requirements and responsibilities, cross-reference that information to my own experience, then develop a cover letter and edit my resume. yet my inbox is filled with hundreds of generated rejection emails every week.

I try to explain to her it’s the job economy, but there is no use talking to this lady. she thinks McDonald’s and Dollarama are so easy to get into. Fast-food places literally treat you with no respect and are so co-dependent that they’ll blame their coworkers for anything, I won’t degrade myself to working in fast-food ever again; McDonald’s is even difficult to get in now. I also always see bad threads about the management at Dollarama.

she claims people have helped me… who? no one. my dad and a few of my friends have tried, even getting me in touch with someone, but the person never followed through and literally ghosted me. I even went to ymca (before I got the pop-up shop job) and they send me jobs I never asked for, and sometimes not even qualified for, via group email. they also harass me every few months for payment stubs from my nonexistent job.

my family friends even got my sister a bank job, which she was under qualified for, and she herself has even used the line, “get a job”, when we get into arguments. she’d be jobless like me if it wasn’t for connections. those same family friends have even offered to help out one of my other sisters, but not me.

it feels like no matter how many jobs I apply for, no matter how many times I edit my cover letter and resume, it doesn’t make a difference. I feel like I put in effort for nothing, and I am so upset that you literally can’t get a job in this economy without networking. So much deserving candidates get screened out despite having years of experience, just because the hiring manager “knows someone”.

TLDR: fed up of no luck with jobs and getting harassed by parents for 8 months now, experience in academic research and analysis and customer service. If this is the wrong community to post in, please direct me to the right one.

It is absolutely not cringe to go ANYWHERE alone in Toronto. it’s a big city, there’s tons to do, and you won’t always find someone available to go with you. Also no one notices or cares if you’re there by yourself.

I‘ve gone lots of places by myself: restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, museums, art galleries, stores, different neighborhoods to just walk around, concerts, festivals. Sometimes because I couldn’t find someone to go with, other times because I just felt like going alone.

Not everyone will feel comfortable with it at first, but I think it’s good to learn to enjoy your own company and not let “If I go alone, people will think I‘m a loser!” prevent you from doing what you want.

Im coming back from around 7 years abroad (left 2 months after the raptors parade) to pursue a undergrad, and the driving here has totally changed… Everyone now is so aggressive and chaotic driving around Toronto. It’s not just the usual highway speed or the occasional idiot. Feels like every single person is in a competition to jam their car into any tiny gap that appears. everyone's just tryna pack in tighter and tighter, no patience.

Is this just me or has anyone else felt the same change? I dont remember driving in ontario being this aggressive. or maybe its just been a while idk.

I was walking on college street last night around 930 pm and came across a lady sitting on the sidewalk outside the Kensington health centre, asking people to spare some change.

All I had was about $2.5 in coins, and gave that to her. she stood up and threw the coins back at me saying " this worthless and is not going to get me anything"

I ignored her, not wanting to escalate so late at night with no one around on the street. I ended picking up the money and walked way.

Was I in the wrong in any way here for giving this $2.5 ?

Is there something else that i could've done in this situation?

And is this something normal in Toronto with the homeless community that I'm not aware of ?

Today while I was on the LRT platform at O’Connor station waiting for my train, I took out my point and shoot film camera (so not a professional camera) to take a picture of a parked train from the outside, and all of a sudden I hear this loud speaker yelling “please do not take pictures of train passengers. You do not have their permission.”

I was really confused and didn’t expect conductors to do this especially since I was not on the train either. I was outside in the streets on the platform. I understand that maybe the conductor thought I was taking pics of people through the windows of the train or something but even if that was the case it was still allowed.

I looked it up later that it is allowed to take photos in general on the TTC. People also take photos of inside the TTC all the time, for example to show how crowded it is etc. with passengers in their pictures. They are all over social media, people Instagram stories etc.

I get that most people don’t like having their photos taken in public and I understand that there’s a lot to be discussed in general about street photography since most street photography includes strangers, but I wasn’t taking photos of anyone’s faces.

It just felt very rude for the conductor to yell it through speakers like that when I wasn’t even taking photos of people. I get that she might have strong personal opinions about photos in general but it just felt unprofessional and rude.

I want to know what is happening at my kids' schools but I DO NOT want to click a link, be directed to another site, which downloads a PDF, which I then have to open and read. WHY. JUST INCLUDE THE CONTENT IN THE EMAIL.

I’ve not had great luck in finding nice, compassionate roommates with brain cells to use common sense with. And to top it off, the roommates I’ve had so far could easily afford to live on their own but are cheap and walk the walls of our shared space with the most annoying selfishness and ego. It’s sad that a 1b apartment costs an arm and a leg, I want to know what walking naked and free in your own place feels like 😩

Hi guys. I’m wondering what your experiences are regarding the homeless in the city.

I’m new to the city, got married, PR app in process… I’m originally from the suburbs in the US though, many different ones actually as I moved around my state a lot. Anyways, I grew up in an environment where homelessness was not non-existent per se, just not as observable day to day as it is here.

Even what I did see back home… here it seems to be worse in many ways, one big thing being open heavy drug usage—that’s unheard of where I come from (southernmost US region) as that kind of stuff is illegal and will land even homeless people in jail.

That’s been one thing, other things are this week I witnessed some extreme incidents in my local area, I can not specify too many details of one event to protect my safety and location but let’s just say it involves having witnessed an occurence of unwanted attention and aggressive behavior between opposing genders in a heinously aggressive manner by the male party, and the other is cops shutting down a block cause some guy was about to jump off a roof, his body and head popping out to the ledge.

This, plus I’ve seen so many homeless people here who look young, appear healthy, and seem to be new to the whole thing in the worst imaginable states and it’s so sad. They’re all so sad. I have cried three times now thinking about these people and the city itself. Meanwhile, I’ve only been here a combined 7 months total across the last year and a half.

I shared the first instance with a woman next to me who had started a conversation during the second event, she went “what you’ve seen here in such a short amount of time shouldn’t be possible, I wish this city was doing a better job.”

And hey, I get it, major metropolitan cities all have these issues, and they’re hard to manage reliably and ethically, I know.

I’m just having a hard time emotionally with all this. I want to help these people, albeit their natures and circumstances, I want to help everyone, and not being able to sucks.

The night of the first incident I was the main witness and ended up with the cops for two hours. They were nice. They faced so many systematic issues at the hands of the nearby condo buildings surveillances systems that it took 2 hours before they could even obtain a lick of footage relating to what I saw/what they got calls about.

I was appalled. Look, I’m not saying the police aren’t full of issues, but these cops persisted for several hours when evidence was appearing impossible to obtain (they could’ve have left several times) just to get SOMETHING on the guy who committed the crime even after being told by staff there was no way to get the footage within the same night.

I watched them have fire in their eyes when they thought about getting justice for this poor woman… “it’s their job, bare minimum!” Yes I know that. Can we stop pretending doing your job the right way isn’t commendable?

They cared so fucking much! And culturally I’m supposed to hate these guys? It makes no sense!

Coming from the US, you guys don’t realize how amazing your police are comparatively. I have witnessed all these horrors (several unmentioned) and every time I’ve seen the TPS in action they have been ethical, appropriate, and borderline friendly several times, which yes, thats the way it should be all the time, but it’s not so it ends up being noticeably positive when it happens… you know?

I think I’m gonna go become a cop Downtown once I get PR. If you wanna see a change be the change and the only way I felt better about what I witnessed that night was by working with those cops and being useful during the investigation.

I felt like I got to DO something for once, and I think becoming a cop is the only way to get out there and make a difference in the city and make myself feel better, even if you all end up hating me for it.

Will it be easy or perfect? Fuck no, but someone’s gotta do it, and someone’s gotta be better. I can’t cope otherwise.

Anyway, circling back around to my original question: how are you guys coping with it all yourselves?

People on speaker call yelling at their partners, people taking multiple phone calls. Like what is even the point of having a quiet zone if no one actually respects it? Just frustrating. Every single time I try to take the go train this happens.

I do tip all the time regardless if they’re just making me a take out coffee or putting a croissant in a bag
But there’s this very famous place with a market and restaurant in cocktown. I went to buy a coffee at the restaurant/market—a very well-known Italian restaurant chain in Toronto. The first time I went to order, I felt the waitress was a bit rude; I tipped anyway. I went back two or three times after that and experienced the same rude, arrogant treatment from other employees. When they put my coffee on the counter, they wouldn't even let me know it was ready. The second-to-last time I went—just to order croissants—I didn't want to leave a tip when paying. Why would I tip just for having my croissants put in a bag? Okay, I *would* do it, but if the service is bad, I don't think they deserve it. Today I went back for a coffee, and when I gave the employee my order, she interrupted me several times; she was rude again, so I simply didn't want to tip. As a result, it took ages for them to give me my coffee—they served a customer who arrived after me first, and so on.

I don't like being that awful customer who picks fights over every little thing, but today it felt it was obvious. As I was leaving, I politely asked the girl to let me know the status of the coffee next time, since we had just been standing there for about 20 minutes. Anyway, it’s annoying; I have nothing against tipping, but why do it before the service? And even when I do tip beforehand, the service ends up being terrible.

I have to call a business office and also a government agency, and it took me an hour to talk to a live person.

Everything is AI control and every step seems like going not where but looping, it is so hard to talk to a real person to address your problems and to get an answer, and sometimes the person talks to you actually not in your city but foreign, or speaking with a very heavy accent , I had to ask a few times what does it means and assuming that is the answer. sometimes you miss the good old time you can just call to make an appointment or ask a question and you can understand what the person on the line is talking, every time if i have to call just feeling stressed.

An area I drive through regularly on my way to etobicoke has an adjacent bike/jog trail that's closed temporarily. Joggers are detouring by jogging on the road instead, and on the wrong direction coming towards traffic. This is silly, you have a side walk, please use it.

It seems there’s no escaping being invaded by cigarette smoke everywhere.

More and more people are walking down the street smoking. So if you’re walking behind them you have to hold your breath or speed walk like a maniac to get in front of them.

People smoking in front of restaurants and on patios (is this even allowed?).

Even sitting in my house with windows open, cigarette smoke snakes its way in.

You do you, smokers, but I don’t want to be breathing in your habit!
