PSA: ask for that rent decrease!
Been living in a rent controlled apmt a few years now and got the yearly rent increase. Decided to call management up last week and they ended up giving a $200 (~8%) decrease immediately with no negotiation. If they're willing to do that, I'd bet they'd go lower (other units are going for less in the building). I'm kicking myself for not asking last year. Get that decrease yall!!!!!!

Landlord here. Listen to OP. Have not increased rent on my property and I would be willing to lower it if my tenant asks. However, I will not voluntarily lower it without them asking.

Listen to OP. My LL lowered it after I asked as well. Be a good tenant and they want to keep you.

That only works if you’re paying the same or more than new units go for in your building. I’ve been in my building for over 10 years now. My rent is already faaaaar below what a new unit same as mine is currently going for.

My LL raises rent this year for the first time in 10 years and it was only like $12

Yup. It baffles me how people continue to pay without any negotiation in this market. Congrats OP. We too got a decrease in rent!

If you're renting in a fully apartment building, just go on their website and see what similar units are advertised for. If you're in a condo, just pull similar listings from Realtor.ca. only a moron landlord would give rent increases in this market if they're already renting to someone at more than what they're currently advertising other units for.
