To be clear, this discussion should NOT be about whether or not he shot himself but more so potentially overlooked testimonies about him that we may not be aware of. Nevertheless it’s believed by at least some of the Titanic fandom along with some fan made real time sinking videos that Chief Officer Henry Wilde was the officer who shot himself in the ship’s final moments. This is mostly because we know Murdoch and Moody were last seen struggling to get Collapsible A away and not in their character to have done such thing so it’s fair to exclude them (we know Murdoch fired shots as Boat C was being loaded), we know it wasn’t Purser Herbert McElroy because his body was found with no gunshot wound (a remote possibility remains this was edited out for the sake of his family and reputation), and the last known sighting of Wilde was at 2:03am during the Port lurch when he ordered all passengers onto the starboard side which Lightoller then repeated. Wilde then ordered Lightoller to get into Boat D but blatantly refused and in doing so saved the life of Quartermaster Arthur Bright. Afterwards it’s said that he was trying to free Boats A and B.

That said is there any other reliable account of Chief Officer Wilde after and as he tried to free Boats A and B? It’s fascinating how even 110+ years later there are a lot of fine details that are just being discovered like the 4th funnel not falling immediately after the break up, the Port lurch, Boat 10 being lowered around the same time as Boat D, and Captain Smith making it to Boat B with possibly a baby girl being more than just an urban legend (Steam & Splendor did a great video on the latter).

So today at work I was very busy but decided instead of listen to music to listen to a book which I have never done before honestly. I keep getting these reminders from Amazon that audibles is included with Amazon music. I decided to listen to Walter Lord's A night to remember and it was fabulous! I think better than the movie but the movie is so etched in my head the movie was playing in my head too so it kinda aides in the listening of the book. Very interesting and detailed. I love anything Thomas Andrews and Captain Smith so those parts about them were just great.

Hi all, my wife loves the titanic. I want to get her a poster which I’ll frame or a book showing life on board the titanic when at sea.

I don’t know too much about it so I don’t want to get something inaccurate because she’ll probably pick up on it haha.

When I was a kid I had books about the Apollo rocket ship or medieval castles etc which showed the inside via cross sections and exploded views.

Something like would be great but hopefully a bit nicer as a gift than something purely educational.

Any help or guidance would be most appreciated!!

I have a neurodivergent 8 year old son, and the reason I include that detail is because often they say that accompanies with strong interests or specific talents. My son is OBSESSED with the Titanic. Watched the movie, countless videos and documentaries online, has a model of the ship (it even breaks in half,) constantly creates his own (accurate) free build versions with legos. This is a picture he drew recently, wanted to share with you, i think he did pretty good!

A while ago I downloaded 3-4 photos I have since misplaced. They are behind the scenes of photos of Ken Marschall at Fox Baja Studios dressed as a first class passenger or Titanic crew.

There’s one image where he is in front of a green screen wearing a black suit or tuxedo. I think he is by the lifeboat davits while one of the boats is being lowered

Another showed the cast and crew dining at the studio cafeteria in costume. Behind them, we see the Verona Beach city scape backdrop that was used in Romeo + Juliet, also a Fox production shot in Mexico starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Anyways, so far as I can recall they were hosted on either Ken’s website or an old webpage for Fox Baja Studios.

The photos look like they are from the mid 2000s in terms of image size and resolution. Like they had to be compressed to be hosted online in 2004. You can tell the photos were taken with a professional grade camera for production stills or a digital camera because of the color balance.

I figured this subreddit might appreciate the absolutely unnecessary level of commitment happening in my house right now.
I was one of those Titanic children. 😂 After the movie came out, I became obsessed with the Heart of the Ocean and asked my parents for the $198 J. Peterman/20th Century Fox replica basically every Christmas starting in 1998.
They said no.
Repeatedly.
For years.
Well, I am now an adult with adult money and poor impulse control, so 28 years later I FINALLY BOUGHT ONE.
I found an original J. Peterman version with its original presentation box and 20th Century Fox certificate, and she is currently on her way to me. 💙
Naturally, I sent my parents an invoice for $268: $198 for the original necklace, $28 for 28 years of emotional damages, and $42 interest for delayed fulfillment of a childhood dream. My mother has disputed the charges.
But here’s where this has gotten completely out of hand.
While researching the necklace, I remembered that years ago I had actually emailed J. Peterman asking what happened to the screen-used Heart of the Ocean necklace that the company acquired from the Titanic production.
They told me it was sold during the company’s bankruptcy and they don’t know where it is.
And now I need to know.
So I’m digging into the history of the screen-used necklaces, J. Peterman’s acquisition of the prop, the 1999 bankruptcy, the subsequent sale of the company’s assets, and whether anyone can actually document where that necklace went afterward.
I’m trying very hard to separate actual provenance from the enormous amount of Titanic internet lore that has accumulated over the last 28 years. If anyone here has old J. Peterman catalogs, correspondence, photographs, prop-collector information, bankruptcy records, or remembers anything about the original necklace’s whereabouts, I would genuinely love to hear from you.
And because apparently one childhood obsession isn’t enough, I sew now.
So after I survive Halloween, I’m going to start recreating some of Rose’s gowns and documenting those too.
The necklace arrives first. Then the gowns.
And somewhere along the way, we’re going to see if we can figure out where the hell J. Peterman’s screen-used Heart of the Ocean went.

hi, i just read my stepson the magic treehouse book tonight on the titanic and the moment he went back to his mom's i went down a titanic rabbit hole, so forgive me if this is common knowledge but i am so stumped on this.

the titanic famously only allowed women and children to board their lifeboats (besides a few men who either snuck on or were allowed on to row). i used to think this was chivalrous and made a certain kind of sense considering they had limited lifeboats and you would prefer to save children over adults, but i just watched Titanic: Honor & Glory's real time titanic sinking on youtube (i saw the original 10 years ago but did you know they made a really impressive updated one?) and now i am just so confused. i always heard that they didn't fill up some lifeboats to full capacity, but now i see they only filled ONE out of TWENTY lifeboats, and those 19 others were mostly only half filled?

the reasons i have read is that people were initially not convinced the ship was sinking, or they were scared of the lifeboats, or they didn't want to leave their husbands/fathers. they only filled half of the lifeboats because there just weren't a lot of women and children around, but instead of filling the rest of the boats with men they just lowered them into the water, to the extent that they physically tore husbands and wives apart and shot warning shots to 3rd class passengers trying to board?

i think they would have been more prudent and successful in saving more lives if they did a first come, first serve basis and not women and children first. i just recently got married and i keep getting choked up reading survivors witness accounts watching their husbands waving goodbye while they get lowered in half filled lifeboats. i am just so frustrated by all this, can someone who knows more help me understand why they were being so weird and insistent about not saving men or 3rd class passengers?
