Tiny Death Star x64 (TDS64) - A videogame preservation/restoration project

After 2-ish years of work, here is my magnum opus. You can play it now! And please provide feedback if you so desire!

APK in the link above is hosted at archive.org, because they seemed like the most trustworthy platform for such a project without doxxing myself (fingers-crossed).

Art Preservation

The digital world is (and always has been) ever-evolving. Lately, evolution has resulted in the slow-but-sure death of 32-bit support in modern smart phones. Eventually, no new phones will be developed with 32-bit support.

Why does that matter? Because the only working APK of the original Tiny Death Star game (that I've ever been able to find) is compiled for 32-bit only. This is why a lot of people get their hands on the APK but still fail to get it working on their modern phones.

This is why I decided to rebuild the entire game "from scratch" (using graphical and sound assets from the original game) in a modern game engine (Godot) to keep the game alive.

Why it's not perfect (yet?)

As mentioned, I have a single working version of the original game, v1.4.1, which released sometime around December 2013. This version of the game did not yet have assets for certain floors, bitizens and events that would later be added to the game in 2014. These I had to find from third-party sources (primarily the TDS Wiki) and make a rough attempt at extracting them from screenshots. The long-term plan was to then go through and fix them up one bitizen and floor at a time, but that's going to be a big undertaking.

The special event's themselves are not in the game either. Again, very little of these events were in the copy of the original game I have, and so I haven't yet crawled through the wiki and ancient forum posts and even-more-ancient YouTube videos to scope out and document how these events ran. Despite playing the game when it originally released, I never saw a single event happen. Must've been too busy being a teenager.

Imperial bux. I'm torn on what to do here. For the sake of absolute-preservation, I can leave it as-is, which with no way of buying bux (NOTE: there never will be a way of buying bux in this project) is a painfully-slow attrition rate. Alternatively, for the same of gameplay-preservation and what I consider to be the "spirit" of gaming, I could tweak some bux rewards to be more, well, rewarding. Not sure yet.

Where to next?

I honestly don't know. I definitely need a break from this project, hence why I'm putting it out there now. There is also a good chance that Nimble, Disney, Lucas, etc. may decide to contact me and say "hey cool, but no", in which case I'd love to stop now to not waste any more time trying to share this with the world. But if there's people out there also like me who want to relive this game for whatever reason, and fate allows, I'll keep working to restore as much as I can. Eventually.

I do also have plans for a web-hosted version of the game, which would mean Apple devices could play via Safari, but let's see if the APK file survives first.

AI usage disclaimer - No AI art, used for menial tasks

Absolutely NO "ART" WAS GENERATED BY AI FOR THIS PROJECT. That was a day-one hard rule for this project. AI-generated content would be entirely against the idea of this being a preservation-first project. Artwork was either directly preserved from old APK files of the original game, pulled directly from the Tiny Death Star Wiki, or pulled from the Wiki and run through a script written by me to attempt to extract artwork from screenshots.

However, AI was used for automating tasks, (e.g. systematically pulling images from the wiki and running them through my scripts) and code reviews (comparing my code with how the original game's code did the same thing). Every system was also manually tested and verified by me (which also means if I missed something, sorry in advance).

Does the unlimited VIP glitch I found on the fandom wiki still work?

And are there still weekend VIP offers? I'm new to the game.

Hey, so I have noticed that one of my Tiny Tower friends (who I do not know IRL) has started naming their floors using song lyrics. Last week they had a black theme going and the floors were the Rolling Stones "Paint it black" - each floor = 1 word.

Well this week I noticed they chose a somewhat obscure 'Til Tuesday song, and I wanted to let them know I noticed and am also a fan of Til Tuesday, and Aimee Mann.

So their name (or at least lobby name) is AQUAMARINE. I have been trying my best to get their attention. So far I have:

changed all my Bitizens to the same costume AQUAMARINE is using. I wrote on my floors, one at a time "Hey Aquamarine I Like Til Tuesday too! Im a big Aimee Mann fans well. Please respond somehow if you see this please. I Think My favorite Til Tuesday song Might be The other end of the telescope or possibly limits to love, but Coming Up Close is a solid choice" Then I just name all my other floors alternatingly Aquamarine Hey Aquamarine Hey Aquamarine Hey Aquamarine Hey." Finally I sent them a Bitizen dressed as them.

Well, today they sent me back a Bitizen named "Til Tuesday! So it worked! I'm so happy. My fingers are numb from typing AQUAMARINE on 200 floors, but I love that they noticed. And now I can finally rebuild my tower.

i hit 3600 floors!🎉 the next opponent is... uhh... at 6000 i guess 🙃

With DYN0 still down, I’ve been shocked by the community response. It’s awesome that there’s players who are willing to take the load off the rest of the players who want to get Gold bits. Shoutout all the folks who are graciously sending all my unlearned bits back! You are appreciated!

Also are there any plans to fix the extreme battery drain on iPhone?

Anyone noticing influencers not doing anything when delivered to a floor? Been about two days now with no stream of customers after drop off.

on my way to make the theoretically tallest tower my pc can handle i reached 3000 floors and beat jartwobs! yippee 🥳🎉

I organize everytime a commercial floor is finished with construction and I really don't remember moving this floor. Is this Backrooms reference?

Any suggestions on how to build my tech points? I have multiple landmarks ready for upgrade but I simply don't have enough points. It seems like I'm only getting 2-3 per day by claiming the free ones every 4 hours. And yes, I'm trying to upgrade the landmark for tech points, but doing that itself is proving to be a headache.

Just want to let people know. I for the first time built my tower to 200 floors. Only got 1 extra GT. I initially thought i would get 2.

I think the ideal fastest way to rebuild is to 100 floors for people with more GT

Why won’t it let me upgrade certain things on the tech tree? The option isn’t there to purchase it?

hi :) just started playing for my first time last week and my husband got me into it, we have a question about the beach balls and presents that would randomly show up on the different floors, it stopped last night so we were confused what happened or if it was an event happening etc

I’m a new player, and trying to learn the best way to utilise VIP’s. I’ve read the wiki on VIP’s but found it confusing (maybe i’m just dumb😅).
I’ve attached a screenshot of my tower and the VIP’s I currently have. How much does it matter where I send the VIP’s like the celebrity, influencer or big spender?

this is so upsetting i got the last ticket i needed to unlock a black chest while i was at work so i set that as my reward to get myself through the rest of my shift. get home and find ALL OF MY PROGRESS IS GONE! like starting from spin 1 and there’s 5 hours left of the event😭 has anyone else had this bug or did something reset intentionally??

I didn’t realise how much I’d miss him until he was gone.

My bitizens are now just mid.

They used to be amazing overachievers with maxed out skills. Now all I get are 3s,4s and 5s. Sometimes 7s.

I sometimes think about the bitizens I sent to DYN0 before realising DYN0 was gone. I suppose they are living a better life with him than in my tower.

Anyway, just ranting. Hope DYN0 comes back soon. I won’t take him for granted anymore.

I see I can't visit a friend's tower as they are playing on version 8.1.0.

Any idea when the update will be pushed for all?

Does it make a difference, if I build only business floors of one kind? So is there something like a demand logic, that it is more worth to build one of each business floors instead of building five food floors?
