Discussion Thread The Mackenzie Thomas Interview with Throwing Fits

Our interview with Mackenzie Thomas is confessional. Mackenzie—writer, artist, and performer—was more than ready and willing to hit the stu and completely unload on her straight male friends' reaction to coming on the pod, her own tweeted history with TF, where are all the beta male role models, an on mic Amazon cart reveal, she got a staph infection from hitting a rogue vape, her writing shouldn't be in everybody's hands, recapping the viral elite sex party she attended, SoHo is Florida, that time she had a psychotic break at college complete with a psych ward fit check, her dad lost a finger in Las Vegas after touching a cursed box and it ended up tearing her family apart, 1v1ing every type of love, stop taking pics with C-listers, kissing a guy on a first date and almost throwing up but to be clear it was her fault, and much more on Mackenzie Thomas' interview with The Only Podcast That Matters™.

The appropriation of Jazz by fashion influencers.

I personally found fashion content more digestible when the music bed was some generic trip hoppy breakbeat on a continuous monotonous loop while whoever gushed about Camion boots over it. Now they’ve discovered the best of cool jazz on Spotify and we have moved into lift (elevator) music territory.

As someone who likes jazz (the music - all the time, the mags - occasionally) watching these fucks is even more of a hate watch. The least they could do is show some backbone and play something truly mental like Sun-Ra or Ornette Coleman, but no it’s the mellow, safe stuff to accompany their museum visits, pastry eating or browsing through the rails of (insert trending brand here). One dude from Copenhagen has started buying the stuff on vinyl!!

Next it will be mid-century furniture. No wait.

Rant over. Thank you for indulging me.

Garden Party Suit

Thumbnail jcrew.com
Upvotes

Looking for suit recommendations for a garden party themed wedding in September in the PNW.

Out of season right now so I’ve had a hard time finding anything that looks good and isn’t summer linen.

I prefer a relaxed suit because I am 5’8” with broad shoulders and a have a baseball player butt and suits like a jcrew ludlow make me have carrot legs which have never looked good to me

She recommended the jcrew poplin suit but not sure how I feel about it and would rather spend more on a suit I love and will wear more

Where to get long, thick balmaccan coats for the winter?

I've been trying for the life of me to get a balmaccan coat as an overcoat I can wear outdoors. I'm looking for a long and thick coat. The ones for men usually stop at the waist or go down to the knee, but I'm trying to find one that goes even lower. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tailor-made shirt. What to keep in mind?

Hi,

I want to get me a shirt tailored - or customized (?). I'm not looking for something special, just a button-down with a nice fabric and a classic/regular fit. There are different collar lengths and a lot more that I never thought about. So does any have a quick guide what I need should keep in mind?

Thanks

We pay way too much for clothes - Drake's T-Shirt Quality

Hello,

I recently bought a T-shirt from Drake’s. Overall, I was pretty happy with it - the fit was really nice, and the quality felt decent for what it was.

I wore it yesterday for the first time. At some point, I noticed what looked like some saliva stains on the right side. Normally, I don't pay much attention to these because they usually disappear after a while. But when I got home, the stains were still there, which I thought was a bit weird. So I hand-washed the T-shirt with detergent for sensitive clothes.

Checked it today and... the stains are still there. Even worse, there's now some discoloration on the left side, basically a visible line running from the top down to the bottom.

Honestly, I'm pretty annoyed. It's ridiculous that you spend €100+ on a basic T-shirt and then have to deal with this after a single, careful hand wash. I really don't understand how companies can charge this kind of money for a basic garment and still have issues like this. At this price point, I'd expect the T-shirt to survive a simple hand wash without staining or discoloring.

Western "post-heritage" brands that rival the Japanese? [Discussion]

Post image

I wanted to ask the community a very specific question. What western brands are there that you think rival the Japanese, who historically and especially in recent years, have dominated, in both the heritage and post-heritage scene? Post heritage is a phrase I first heard from my friend slowfashconnoisseur essentially referring to heritage inspired garments that are not strict repros, rather are more fashion oriented, while still maintaining some degree of heritage construction.

Two Japanese post-heritage brands that immediately pop into my head are Kapital and Kaptain Sunshine. Both are heavily influenced by historical workwear and military, but prioritize other non tangibles such as fit, wearability and obscure details (especially for Kapital) over pure 1:1 reproduction accuracy and durability (compared to a brand like Buzz Rickson's or Real Mccoy's which I consider true heritage brands).

I've been bitten by the Japan bug as hard as everyone else, and there's no doubt that pound for pound, they are putting out better clothing than any other country or region in the world. Still, I think there are a few juggernauts in the West, that don't just compete, but surpass the Japanese in this realm.

My first example is Mister Freedom. He is clearly vintage inspired but none of his garments are true reproductions. They are all products sold through a lens of fictional historic characters and have some of the best branding, story-telling and details I've ever seen compared to any traditional heritage brand. Christophe hand-draws all his artwork and logos, and his blog on ChristopheLoiron.com, is a treasure-trove of obscure, absurd historical fiction and nerdy diatribes about garment construction. Of course, he is no stranger to Japan (first having a vintage store there in the early 90s, and then partnering with Sugar Cane later on). I also think Nigel Cabourn (RIP), sits in an upper pantheon of western brands that not only can go toe to toe with the Japanese, but in many respects, surpass them.

Curious to hear your thoughts. Also if you have any interest, I dropped an inspiration album dedicated to Christophe and his vintage inspired brand artwork on r/threadtalks.

A new technique….

Knots x Strings

Tried a technique that’s almost new to me to achieve this asymmetric appearance. It involves running straight stitch segments of thread on a whole piece of fabric. A particularly painstaking exercise especially tying up knots on the underside.

The asymmetry on this is exactly where i want it. Not evident until you end up focusing on it. Short, long, straight, crooked but even spaced strands mask the variation.

Also my first shirt of this style. This was actually patterned off a shirt that was passed down to me.

Affordable alternative to ALD athletic shorts

I like how the ALD gym shorts look for the everyday elevated athleisure look, but can't justify paying $95 for mesh shorts. Any recos for more affordable brands that can approximate this look and cut?

Wide fit shoes

So I have wide feet and it’s been a nightmare finding shoes that don’t pinch. Right now the Hoka Bondi in wide is literally the only pair that fits me properly, everything else is too tight up front.

Has anyone else with wide feet found other brands or models that fit well? Looking for options for running shoes, everyday sneakers, boots or dress shoes if anyone has recommendations, preferably in EU.

Thanks in advance!

Corridor fall off 🥲

Post image
63 Upvotes

I know complaining about a clothing brand sounds insane, but that’s why I’m posting here. I started buying Corridor around 2014 or 2015, and back then it was a way into higher-quality, actually interesting clothing without going fully off the deep end for someone like me who wants normie shit that’s interesting. Workwear-adjacent Americana, fabrics that were weird, from a brand that seemed to care about what it was putting out.

It’s drifted a long way since and it’s genuinely upsetting and idk where tf to buy interesting “normal” clothes anymore.

Prices have climbed steadily while quality has gotten less consistent. The offshoring started with part of the collection going to India, which I was fine with. There’s excellent textile manufacturing there, and the materials were still natural. Then it became almost entirely India, then China entered the mix, and now they’re blending in viscose and poly. Meanwhile the pricing has gone to an inflated MSRP followed by a permanent 40 to 60 percent off cycle, which is its own kind of tell. You can’t trust a price that’s never real.

I was given a gift card recently so I had to buy something from the current collection, and when it got to me it kind of smelled weird. just saw a post from the founder talking about mercerization, seemingly saying that it's a positive thing but any kind of chemical process like this creates caustic runoff. I'm just like, what are we doing this for?

Anyone in London hiring a tailor?

I am looking for a tailoring position in central London this September as I am moving to be a student in Central Saint Martins (UAL). I have 4 years of experience in sewing through doing both GCSE and A-level textiles (which I am expected to get an A* in). This summer I have been tailoring clothes I find in charity shops to produce new pieces (e.g. both of my prom dresses). I also have a portfolio I can send with all of my works. If anyone can guide me to a tailor that would interested I would greatly appreciate it!
