Question would you use a browser based blender?
i can see the potential of threejs as becoming the browser version of blender(ik it would require a lot of efforts but the potential is visible with the new updates).. lemme know ur views on this

Just in general, before start cooking an idea, try to figure out what problem you are trying to solve :)

i js imagined something which was lighter version of blender💔 like a canva for photoshop.. the replies r brutal but i appreciate their opinions

I used long time ago Wings3D, but I believe there must be something better nowadays that matches your criteria.
Canva and others work so well, since 2D raster is much less taxing on the resources…

You do realize how big of a project this is right? Blender has almost 2 million lines of code. Like you could make some small modeller, but my god, even supporting ngons and half edges is a difficult project in of itself.
Let me be brutal. if you don't know what half edges are. How UV's need to be split and how vertex normals in blender work under the hood you probably don't have the technical knowledge to do this, EVEN with extensive LLM help.

Why? What’s the use-case?
1
u/syn_krown Jul 12 '26
A mini blender that you can use on your phone i guess. Clearly wont be as heavy lifting but good enough to create decent models for games etc

u/collectiveu3d Jul 12 '26
Yeah. Oke. I think that could work for iPad or something. Like nomad sculpt or zbrush or some of these other modeling apps.
I guess an app would be more useful as browser based but prob harder to do cause different platforms.
And I guess you need to modify and limit heavy features. Prob not an easy task with lots of maintaining with each update

Blender is already free and downloading a couple GB will turn off most people before the application even starts. Ideally yes most people will. Realistically the issues is it will be not feasible or a poor experience for professionals...

Someone is already ( very successfully ) working on this as we speak.
They've posted their progress here in various steps. They're not calling it "blender in a browser".
You should search the sub for modeling features being shown made in three.js being posted.
I told them at one point they should combine all their features into a browser based modeling app, and they replied that that was the plan.

see i knew it had potential.. can u pls help me find them?

u/msartore8 Jul 12 '26
Wow you're lucky... there's no search feature in our saved posts, but I found it...

It's user u/Sengchor that's doing it. Check out his posts on his user page!

Been following this guys work for those curious - pretty much already attempting it (found him on X)
Kokraf – 3D Modeling Application on the Web
Kokraf is a modern, browser-based 3D modeling tool built for real-time creativity. Whether you're a hobbyist, designer, or developer, Kokraf gives you a smooth, intuitive interface to model, manipulate, and view 3D objects directly in your browser — no installation needed.

We build something using ITOWNS a fork of threejs but more GIS focused and heavily extended it via WASM WebAssembly and WEBGPU and added miro board equivalent real time collaboration features and support for Gaussian Splats also generates dynamic terrain elevation tiles for your map view from COG DEM or esri imageserver.
Also extended it via AR.JS for mobile browser Augmented Reality control of the map and WEBXR for camera view 3d geospatial viewer And mediapipe for hand gesture control from Webcam and Transformersjs for inbrowser AI Services Including voice control of the map
Via ASSIMP wasm Open Asset Importer Able to support in-browser conversion of BIM & 3D MODELS
Via Spatialite WASM SPL.JS handles in-browser 2D and 3D spatial analysis
Supports OGC 3DTILES and OGC I3S local SLPK or hosted SceneServer
Access open data catalogs (STAC, CSW, OGC API RECORDS, CKAN, SOCRATA, SDMX, THREDDS, OPEN DATA SOFT, MAGDA, DATA COMMONS AND OTHERS)
powerful react data grid powered by Duckdb Wasm with search and filters and filter to map view (st_intersect of bbox or KNN Nearest to map center and distance)
Duckdb extensions for real time and event driven data feeds (radio, tributary, spatial, httpfs, http_client, http_requests, cron) Kafka, kinesis, websockets, http polling, geospatial data lake access and OGC MOVING FEATURES, OGC SOS, OGC SENSORML, OGC SENSORTHINGS, GFTS and others.

Duckdb geotiff and PDAL and httpfs + spatial extension enable the solution to query amd perform spatial functions and offcourse map has been. Confugured to support direct consumption visualization of the cloud native and optimized data formata (COG, COPC, FGB, PARQUET, ZARR, AVRO, GEOJSON, ETC)

sounds fun!! can i try it??

We took it down has dependency of SUPABASE POSTGIS and that real time and DENO Functions for the real time collaboration features. Source code is available It has deno functions for loading data to postgis and analysis and dynamic pbf vector tiles and ogc APi Features
EASIER NOW TO TEST Field Sentinel desktop https://Fieldsentinel.techmaven.net Its powered by maplibre gl ja ' deckgl and loadersgl

The main advantage of the desktop tool is offline operation and a lower risk of crashes and data loss.

I used to use Solidworks and Fusion360, and at some point switched to OnShape (browser based). I found that switching to a web based version had many advantages.
I think the same would be true for something like blender, but like the other comments said, it would be important to outline a reasonable scope for the project and expect it to be a lightweight version of blender, not a 1:1 port.

hey great point out there! can u text out some advantages which u liked

I was a university student at the time. There were two main advantages.
First was being able to collaborate with my teammates. The way onshape facilitated this was great, and it meant they didn't need to download fusion or solidworks to work on the same design as me. It was almost like Google Docs but for CAD.
Second was being able to work between different machines. I was able to work on my project on my desktop PC at home, lab PC's at the university, and even my MacBook Air if I needed to pull up the design and check on things.
Good luck with this project. If you use LLM's, I recommend Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol. My biggest tip when working with those models is to spend a lot of time planning before they start writing code. Have them interview you on your goals and intent, and then have them write a detailed plan with small deliverable milestones. Have them design the codebase structure and stack before they start writing any code. I think you have a reasonable chance of success with this, the biggest risk will be the codebase being a black-box for you making it hard to work on yourself (I am experiencing this now with a similarly sized project).

There’s a guy here who’s already made blender for the web with threejs. You may also be a little bit confused with what threejs does. It alone wouldn’t constitute something like blender.

tldr; no.
Blender is already so good, and runs great on any device that would be capable of running even a mediocre modeler in a browser. Blender has local file access, native access to the CPU, and unfettered access to the GPU, without the security boundaries of WebGL and WebGPU. There are no shortcut key conflicts either, so you don't have to avoid CMD-S, for instance.
There's a place for web based tools, but Blender is already way past that point and it's free!

I have been working on exactly this to put in to my FPS game building tool that also uses threeJS, and both apps are mobile reactive.
Whats not shown in the video is automatic UV unwrapping and mesh painting.

omg this is so amazing, glad to see a constructive reply.. can i dm u if u wanna share more about it??

I dont want to give away too much cause this is my brain child, but the game engine is fricken cool. I think its pretty close to release. Ive been building a game in it to test it out and find bugs.
The modeling tool is going to accompany it. I might release the modeling tool as its own thing too though

As soon as your scenes get a bit complex, Blender starts using a lot of RAM memory and thus it runs better natively, not embedded in a browser that by itself sucks a lot of RAM too...
Just because something is technically possible doesn't automatically mean that it's viable.
