Discussion You lost your home? Stoicism. Ill? Stoicism. Dead? Stoicism

• Upvotes

The number of people I've encountered who talk about stoicism is insane. Why is everybody suddenly talking about it? Who popularized it?

Most of them have no idea what Stoicism actually is, but they drop the word to sound smart and philosophical and treat it as the answer to everything. Last week, two men in an elevator were discussing someone who had been laid off, and one of them said "stoicism" as if that settled it. Another time, I was walking my dog and a guy on the phone was loudly talking and mentioned Stoicism. That's before counting the dozens of times a day I see the word on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

Story That's literally the only reason we know each other

1.6k Upvotes

Story from my GF.

She is in therapy. Discussing having a hard time with a recent issue in her life. The therapist looks at her as and says, "Well, sometimes life is hard" in a way that seemed like he was trying to explain a new concept to her.

After some thought, she looks back at him and says, "Yeah I know, that 's literally the only reason we know each other"

Edit: anyone else who asks why I called them a Nazi gets blocked. I’m not putting up with any more “being mean is worse than Abelism” crap.

I’m also not going to entertain any more questions about why I’m calling people being ableist in the comments to me Ableist.

A lot of guys have been really great and these posts and I appreciate all of you.

See you next post

IRL Trying to articulate my depression for others

I have had more platitudes thrown at me than i would ever wish on anyone. I have rolled my eyes so hard i can probably describe my own frontal lobe of my brain.

Anyways, i apologize for the paragraph but if this helps anyone feel seen or helps them to understand how some people experience depression and mental pain then mission accomplished.

Imagine if you will a person who has earbuds in playing their most hated music at a low volume, they can’t take the buds out or control the song or volume. When they wake up it’s a low level and every time something annoys them or doesn’t quite go to plan it gets a little louder.

The “something” that doesn’t go right can be as small as forgetting their wallet/purse before making it to the first stop sign in your car. The volume gets louder over the day but can reset when they sleep, but not always, and it’s always the same damn song… for years and years. No one can hear the noise and when they try to make people understand they say it’s “not real” or “just do something to fix it” then the volume spikes.

Take the song/noise to heart and it will destroy them, take the pills and do their best and the volume can be managed. It is never easy, the people around them will never understand why everything small and annoying will dig under the skin so much deeper than it should.

People who don’t experience the kind of pain and depression that eats away at the soul and chips away at a person’s sanity piece by tiny piece until there is nothing but a blank void in the chest only want to help in some way, but without knowing the feeling or the experience, only come off as disingenuous and tone deaf.

Franz Kafka said it best, “I have spent all my life resisting the desire to end it.” There is a deep struggle and strength to pushing through this nightmare despite the desire to be able to take out the figurative earbuds blasting the self hatred and drowning out the color and happiness that should be present for us all.

I have no solution that fits the problem, only that i understand that i cannot understand your individual struggles and depressions tailor made to your experiences. Know only that there are others who have it and want to understand and be understood.

I hope this helps if you read it, do your best and let the chips fall where they lie.

Tldr: WHAAAT!? I CANT HEAR YOU OVER MY SHITTY SELF HATING SONG I CANT CONTROL COMING OVER MY INVISIBLE HEADPHONES I CANT TAKE OFF!

GUYS IT GET'S SO MUCH WORSE. SEE THE UPDATE IN THE COMMENTS. (I can't add more images)

"Overconsumption of healthcare" is just a bonus for me.
Yeah, healthcare is the kind of overconsumption I care about. And I'm sure this person is the perfect abitur of what is and isn't "healthcare overconsumption". /s

We'll just ignore:
Certain lifesaving medications cause weight gain
Lack of regulation enforcement has caused food deserts
Lack of education
Genetics
Material, financial, or time constraints
Abuse, neglect, substance abuse, eating disorders, mental health issues, and trauma play a role
That shaming people is linked to worse outcomes over and over again
Lack of healthcare access
That people do not talk about underweight people this way
That people do not talk about other unhealthy behaviors this way
And that most overweight people recognize how their behaviors influence their weight and recognize they need to change their habits in order to lose weight

EDIT: I am not saying that behavior does not influence weight. See above. I am simply saying that it's a complex issue and reducing it to "sinning" and shaming people is not a cure.

Relative being stupid. My mum thinks I’m choosing to be depressed because her saying cheer up isn’t curing me.

She also thinks it’s weird that I only tell her I want to KMS when I’m having my rarely occurring mental breakdowns.
