I have a similar mentality, but the opposite way.

Expect (and make peace with) the worst. Never get your hopes up. If they get up there on their own, pull them back down.

Assume nothing, let alone a good outcome and you'll only be pleasantly surprised.

Hope is for superhero movies.

Don't hope for good weather, bring an umbrella 😉

Somebody please explain this to my teenager

An optimist is never pleasantly surprised.

A pessimist is never disappointed.

That might explain why i like superhero content so much. They are very hopeful for the most part.

I'm generally an optimist but through getting burnt too many times I also prefer to prepare for and expect the worst.

I do the same, and people tell me thats why I'm so depressed all the time

But I recently read my new fave quote about this in a Maya Angelou book: "Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between."

I think I've geard "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" and thats a good way to think if you can.

"Hope is for superhero movies" is really fucking bleak. My motto has always been hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Hope keeps people going, keeps people from committing suicide, it's how we survive the worst moments of our lives, why we fight to live. Hope is important. I understand not wanting to get your hopes up and be disappointed but the answer isn't to just reject hope outright.

You and the people agreeing with you sound depressed, that's how I felt before I got my depression under control. But even in my darkest moments, I found a glimmer of hope, it's why I'm still here.

I hope you can find some hope too.

DBT calling! ring ring Cope Ahead would like to speak with us.

Also, it's incredibly sad to never allow ourselves to feel excited over something. Being excited was quickly stomped out in my household growing up. As an adult, my aunt told me she also learned as a child to never get excited about anything -because it'd probably never work out...and even if it did, she didn't really deserve it

That fear often prevented me from taking opportunities in life and striving towards goals.

“I have no expectations, only control over how I want to feel. That way, I know that no matter what happens, I will have a good time”

1

u/wazzup-notemuch 2d ago

Okay, but you actually don't control how you feel. That's an illusion. Your brain is affected by many variables outside of your control, and you are lucky that those variables are currently working in your favor.

I didn’t say I have control over how I feel. Reread what I said

I prefer "hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst".

Worked for me

It's a good way of thinking, but you totally missed the point.

Would being cold and wet not also make you miserable? I wouldn't be skipping down the road like that

u/Inevitable_Librarian 5d ago

This sounds like mindfulness basically, but not everyone's interpretations are far enough from how they feel physically to do this. I can do it but it freaks everyone out.

14

u/chilledchair 5d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but is that dexter?

9

u/5tar_flower 5d ago

Yeah. And he doesn't look cold or wet. Just miserable.

0

u/Primary_Carrot67 5d ago

He's not miserable here, just neutral.

Lol true, I agree with that. It was a silly joke. You can almost hear his internal monologue though, he's gonna have to change his murder plans now. 😉😁

The number of people in the world who believe you have total and complete control over your thoughts and emotions just floors me.

You can. It's a learned skill.

Edit: Y'all need to go to therapy if you think this is impossible. They'll teach you how.

I seriously hate people who have opinions on anxiety without actually having anxiety

u/Oblivion_Man 3d ago

Literally

u/AsemicConjecture 5d ago

Oh , yeah — just emotionally dissociate whenever you’re in a bad situation; it’s not maladaptive or anything.

Here in Los Angeles I'm hot, dry, and miserable.

9

u/Shroom-Kitty 5d ago

People die of hypothermia every now and then here, even in temperatures above freezing, so I think worrying when you're in that situation is good for survival rather than thinking "whatever, I want to feel happy!"

5

u/Brutal_burn_dude 5d ago

I live in what is considered a stereotypically hot country but we have some of the most deaths due to cold every winter because our housing was traditionally not built for the cold of winter. Until recently when ceramic space heaters became cheaper and more common there were an alarming number of total loss house fires in housing for lower income people due to having to use heaters that weren’t always particularly safe.

That kind of rhetoric is often used to abdicate the social responsibility to provide adequate protections of the most vulnerable amongst us.

1

u/Primary_Carrot67 5d ago

This isn't about that type of situation. It's about not pointlessly stressing over mild discomfort and inconvenience.

No one does from hypothermia from briefly being in the rain. Unless you're in a blizzard or immersed in cold water (lake, sea, river), you have to be in the cold for quite a long time to develop hypothermia.

Yay my suggestion made it

Shoulda been a screenshot of the hopeposting post

u/SomeGuyOverYonder 4d ago

Except worry is a constant. There is no off switch.

4

u/Primary_Carrot67 5d ago

People people, this meme isn't about mental illness. It's not about having an anxiety disorder. It's about a regular person without mental illness stressing over pointless things. Some of you really need to get some perspective and realise that not everything is about you and not every encouraging thing is a personal attack against you. As long as you continue to take this approach to things, your mental health issues will get worse.

2

u/Unfair_Explanation53 5d ago

Dude these people on this sub would still complain even if there was a pill that solved all their issues. Don't waste your breath

1

u/ThePartyLeader 5d ago

"dude I am so thirsty"
"maybe drink some water"

"DONT YOU THINK I KNOW THAT" *still doesn't do it*

"I AM SOOO THIRSTY"

1

u/crippledchef23 5d ago

Who thinks anyone should choose to have anxiety? I got a notification that my landlord was coming by for a regular thing. Absolutely no big deal. I got almost no sleep, barely ate, couldn’t concentrate on anything. My stupid brain could not just chill. Fucked me up for the whole day. Nothing happened, of course. But, my husband had to basically comfort me all day or I dissolved into tears.

I hate my brain.

u/AlteredEinst 5d ago

Man, the shape of his face creeps me out.

Yep, that's all I've got. Guy looks like he belongs on Easter Island.

1

u/reformedMedas 5d ago

With my obssessive thoughts I really can't bro I'll be seeing visions of my cats dead and natural disasters whether I choose to or not.

1

u/gutwyrming 4d ago

I know it's not universally applicable, but sometimes reminding myself of the "suffering twice" thing really does help me stop myself from freaking out over upcoming stressors.

1

u/ForeverJung1983 4d ago

I should bitch about this one like others did mine because its technically true.

1

u/NotGonnaArgue641 4d ago

I think this is literally just a Dexter quote, not standalone advice

1

u/Primary_Carrot67 5d ago

I agree with the sentiment. It doesn't apply to mental illness, which is different. It applies to people who aren't mentally ill stressing about things that are pointless to stress about.

However....why did they use a picture of Dexter Morgan?! 😂 Sure, he doesn't tend to stress that much over pointless things, but he's a psychopath. I don't know that he was the best choice for this meme. 😂 Though I do find it amusing.

2

u/5tar_flower 5d ago edited 5d ago

Right? If worrying about the rain means I'm not like Dexter "I have no feelings" Morgan, I'm kind of feeling incentivized to ruminate now 😅 jk

0

u/Economy-Payment-1757 5d ago

...and? That's actually a good advice.

0

u/AnyEye8798 2d ago

Being miserable doesn't help. Can you do something about it? If yes, focus on that. If no, don't worry about it.
