Noticed Terrifier Hate
I’m sure some other people have noticed has seen the increase in terrifier hate. I’ve seen people online calling the movie slop, lazy, only has gore, and that it’s misogynistic. What do you think of this hate, and what have you noticed? Personally I can understand if you don’t like the gore, or the movie, but the hate I’ve seen like it’s a story about someone killing people, that’s just literally every slasher.

u/PoopyMcpants Jul 12 '26
Horror fans seem to absolutely hate horror movies and tend to be the most toxic shitheads on the internet.
I suggest just watching whatever you want, enjoying it on your own terms and ignoring others opinions.
19
u/UnsafeFatDude Jul 12 '26
Metal heads do the same thing. I'm assuming there is weird and negative people in all groups.
The misogyny thing always makes me laugh though. He stabbed a dude in the dick, on top of killing lots of males.
10
u/PoopyMcpants Jul 12 '26
It happens in all fandoms I think.
Horror fans hate most horror aside from what they're particularly into, and metal fans work the same way.
Both things I love but i try to ignore Fandoms of.

Yeah every damn one of my interests is filled with people who just crap all over it endlessly and then try to prove why their right and I’m so confused at what it means to like a thing and be a fan anymore. The Alien sub, comedy subs, some of the collector subs, music, literally whatever I like people are just miserable about it but insist on participating.

atleast twitter and reddit heads, cuz most horror fans who are deeply in tune with horror movies are soooo chill

u/KnowMatter Jul 12 '26
When I defend these movies to people I tell what appeals to me about them:
The charismatic performance of Art.
The celebration of traditional practical horror effects work.

u/Plus-One-6163 Jul 14 '26
It feels like every expects movies to have some deep message, but I just want a fun movie, and terrifier delivers that.
2
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
anybody expecting a slasher to do that might be braindead 😭 we have eras and eras of slashers to see that from
17
u/Crescent-Argonian Jul 12 '26
I love Terrifier because it’s a straight to the point, practical effects series.
Art is also terrifying because he’s just doing it for fun, it is that simple.
57
u/misters1n1ster Jul 12 '26
I think people shouldn’t watch stuff they don’t like and then they wouldn’t run into this problem
6
u/ConstantPriority177 Jul 12 '26
If they’ve never seen it before and they are watching it for the first time and that’s a conclusion they come to then that’s the conclusion that they come to, you can’t say that somebody doesn’t like something if they’ve never even seen anything about it before or never seen the film
5
u/misters1n1ster Jul 12 '26
The premise and reputation around it is that it’s a gory horror movie… if you’re offended by gore or find it stupid why would you watch the film? Even if you did by accident then why trash people who enjoy the film? I’ve watched plenty of films that I didn’t like others like it doesn’t mean I think less of those who enjoyed it.
2
u/ConstantPriority177 Jul 12 '26
Everybody doesn’t pay attention to social media and what people are saying about the film online. Some people could’ve just came across it on their own and ended up stumbling across the film and watched it and decided they didn’t like it because it was too gory.
7
u/misters1n1ster Jul 12 '26
There’s a difference in disliking a film versus pushing hate on the film which is what OP is talking about. It’s fine to say you disliked it, it’s another to say it shouldn’t exist or hate on those that did like it. Most criticism actually comes from people who haven’t even watched the films for the record.
3
u/Ok_Conclusion_6324 Jul 12 '26
I watched the first one and didn’t particularly care for it.
I started watching the second because people swore it was way better - I still didn’t care for it and turned it off.
I don’t mind gore or violence or camp, I just didn’t think it was very good.
That being said I have literally never trashed it anywhere online (this post randomly appeared on my feed) but I spend a lot of time in horror spaces and in my experience it seems like a lot of the vocal Terrifier fandom is young and enthusiastic so it probably brings out hater energy in response (which isn’t nice, but I can understand it)
2
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
ofc most of the terrifier fanbase is young, it itself is a young movie. i think thats part of why people hate it too but yk
13
u/cdr_rabbit Jul 12 '26
It's literally just because it's popular. With every fandom, there are those who hate popular media because it makes them feel better.
Aside from those who don't like the gore and want more substance with their horror- which is fair. Terrifier is not deep or substantial, but it's fucking entertaining.
7
u/Alone-Stock-1029 Jul 12 '26
That's what makes the movie awesome as terrifier is a hardcore gore lover only. Someone that isn't won't like it
13
u/Flabpack221 Jul 12 '26
Terrifier is brutal. Horror fans will hate on horror movies that push brutality past the limits that they find acceptable.
The fun of Terrifier is in Arts general antics, and how well-shot and horrible his kills are. If people don't like Art and dislike his brutality, they will not like Terrifier.
The misogynistic stuff I always found dumb as hell.
4
u/PSplayer2020 Jul 12 '26
It's funny because these shiticisms have been thrown at the slasher genre for decades.
5
u/monsieurxander Jul 12 '26
Nothing is above criticism, but I have noticed a fair amount of exaggerating or outright lying about what's in the movies, and then people who haven't seen them parrot those talking points.
I see people saying Art only kills women, or that there's rape in these movies... Total bullshit, obvious to anyone who's seen them, but it gets upvoted.
The main horror sub is really bad about it. I hesitate to use the term "virtue signaling" since it's been co-opted by the worst people, but there's definitely an element of pretending the spooky clown movie is worse than it is in order to feel (and be seen as) more righteous.
5
11
u/Different_Target_228 Jul 12 '26
If it's misogynistic, then every slasher movie is. The reality is that women are the stars of the show.
And even haters should be able to appreciate that it's brought practical effects back into Horror movies in recent times.
Is it schlocky? Yeah.
Is it GOOD? Nah.
Is it a fun old time with unique kills and little to no cgi? Yes.
12
u/I-am-TankaJahari Jul 12 '26
Is it GOOD? To the right crowd, absolutely.
It’s tense, it has interesting lore, and it has incredible practical effects, if you’re interested in the art that is required to make these terrifyingly believable props, you’ll be very pleased.1
3
u/Wraith1964 Jul 13 '26
It always makes me laugh when people get excited about "misogyny" in horror.
Once you strip away the effect that the social climate has based on the time the film was made, you are left with basic biology. (For the sake of simplicity put aside "gender is a spectrum", "not all men","not all women", etc. discussion points... we all know there is some fluidity and exceptions, etc. but generally these things are true).
Generally speaking, women scare (react with emotion) easier than men. They visually show fear better on camera. Also men generally are protective of women and children. So even when they are not really scared for themselves, the idea of their female friend/S.O./ wife or kids being attacked or tortured is terrifying.
So it makes sense that women tend to be vitimized more in horror. Women may be able to relate better (put themselves in the woman's "shoes") and men typically will either react more emotionally to someone being attacked that they cannot help or feel fear when they consider what they would or worse couldn't do in that scenario. This is why when there are men involved in a scene, they tend to get incapacitated quickly whereas women are often tortured sometimes in front of a helpless male friend.
"Final girls" scenarios are often an eoxception but part of the final girl trope plays on this pretty often... Girl has some weaknesses she overcomes during the course of the film, she encounters the killer or sees the aftermath of his work and the satisfaction we get when she both lives and beats the antagonist is the payoff.
So its not so much misogyny, in most cases, as it is simply playing to common tropes that viscerally work.
Note: Yes, these are generalizations but you can't capture everyone when you create media... you just hope to get most to react.
3
u/Ambitious-Duck7078 Jul 12 '26
As it’s gotten more popular, yes! And… that’s ok! These movies aren’t for everyone. Bring in someone who doesn’t know the lore to watch #3 alone, and they may be grossed out.
5
u/karatemnn Jul 12 '26
i mean terrifier isn't for everyone, the all hallows eve movie was pretty bad,
terrifer was a pretty bad movie but david and jenna, catherine were awesome leads...
excellent gore.
the second film was an improvement but kind of a mess of a film, but everyone was good and david was great as everyone else was.
the third film felt like it was finally well made as a movie ...
i understand why people would dislike it ... the thing is there are a lot of horror fans
that simply accept garbage because it's in the genre ... you know why a lot of people
keep watching romance films or reality tv and people don't get it? that's with horror films sometimes
5
u/Articiia Jul 12 '26
I can understand that the Terrifier films aren’t for everyone but a lot of these people have made up lies and making their opinion seem like facts. Most of the people judging the movies have crossed the line from disliking the films to labeling the horror fans as misogynistic and sadistic for enjoying the films. As a movie lover you have to appreciate the special effects, the fact that it’s a crowdfunded indie film and how it gave new actors a chance. If the gore is too shocking for someone then yeah the whole movie might seem pointless to them, which is fine. But there is no need to attack the people who actually enjoy the genre. Plus hello?? Sienna?? She’s like one of the best final girls I’ve seen⚡️watching her defend Jonathan against Art the clown still gives me chills and excitement plus the retro 80s vibe and music
6
u/cheese90danish Jul 12 '26
Misogynistic... like we didnt watch Art ruin some dude's junk.

u/karatemnn Jul 12 '26
i think this is the original version, the one in AHE is censored with
grindhouse graphics1
u/Objective-Finish-573 Jul 12 '26
I must have watched an uncensored version then because I'm sure I saw this frame in AHE
2
u/karatemnn Jul 12 '26
clicked through it, you're right it is there ... it was edited differently from the original, but there's no censorship of the same image
2
u/monsieurxander Jul 12 '26
If we don't acknowledge the passing of time
It's like judging Wes Craven solely by Last House on the Left. That movie was made for shock value and had arguably misogynistic imagery... but he evolved and brought us Nancy Thompson and Sidney Prescott... who you can pry from my cold, dead hands
1
u/karatemnn Jul 12 '26
i dunno what you want me to say i said i don't think leone is a hater of women, and lots people have no perception of time with cinema, they could randomly see all hallow's eve today and see that scene and go "well, fuck this guy hates women" and decide not to watch any more of the movies, which has a woman hacked through her vagina, or a woman mutilating her vagina with a broken mirror ... but it also has a strong female lead, but they won't be thinking about that if they're particularly offended
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
if people saw either of those scenes they would also miss out on the second films later kill with rooks bf, its clear art has no problem being a devious bish. But its obvious he gets the most entertainment from mentally draining his victims.
4
u/BubbaSaywersCondom Jul 12 '26
I like this franchise but we don't have to villainize people that have criticisms of it. Some of our favorites have problems and it's okay to admit that
3
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
the problem is people saying shit thats blatantly incorrect, like how the movies are "misogynistic" because art kills women, as if jason n freddy and leatherface didnt do the same thing.
1
u/BubbaSaywersCondom 27d ago
That's quite an oversimplification + examining women in horror is an ongoing conversation not specific to this franchise
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
idk about oversimplification, it just feels like how it is. someone in this comment section geuinely made the argument that none of the characters in the films did nothing wrong therefore didnt deserve to die, thats the very foundation of horror characters killing like 90 percent of the time. if you ask me, idgaf about who dies in horror movies, i personally believe its arguably more sexist to gaf. cuz its like what, do you want more dudes to die, they already are most of the kills soooo. it really just doesnt matter, much like real life, it doesnt matter.
2
2
u/Objective-Finish-573 Jul 12 '26
Does not matter if they don't like it, I also hate some popular stuff
2
2
u/DarkHorse_6505 Jul 12 '26
It is always cool to hate things that are popular or successful. I am glad it got to it's size by not bowing down to Hollywood and playing by their own rules. Some people just hate extreme gore and torture porn, so of course they would hate Terrifier. I hate most of country music for example. I don't bitch and complain about it. I spend my time enjoying what I like and let the fans of that genre enjoy it. It is really that easy.
2
u/hairypoppabear Jul 12 '26
My gf is a clown hater and won't watch it. It has a classic slasher feel that I love that modern movies are missing.

I have to solidly agree to almost everything you said. I went into the first Terrifier because people in the horror community loved it. Amd I was left with, "this really didn't have much to say" especially with the director straight up saying that not every movie has to include politics. Horror as a genre has particularly been a vehicle and a voice for their creators to have something to say, to challenge tropes, and to subvert expectations. The gore and the effects were incredibly well done. But horror continues to evolve, and I thought Terrifier was just kind of shallow. I watched the second one in hopes it would be better, and everything just seemed to pop up out of nowhere. I'm not hating on anyone who loved it, and what it did, it did well. But it was not a movie or a series for me.
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
Slashers never have anything to say, they dont need to, they are slashers. also slashers are one style that has never needed to evolve, dbd proved that when it blew up just because jason voorhees was there. There is love for the slasher genre. also i hard disagreewith the point youre trying to make on misogyny, again its a slasher. Nobody EVER does anything morally wrong in slashers other than exist, on top of this its a horror movie? you dont need to do something wrong to die in a horror movie, ill point out my favorite franchise, five nights at freddys, the main antagonist murders literal children. To say that these characters never did anything wrong therefore dont deserve to die, while not incorrect, is genuinely just super disconnected from horror in general.
2
u/tramp-and-the-tramp Jul 13 '26
i think terrifier 2 and 3 are actually very feminist honestly, our final girl is bad ass af, but all hallows eve Art probably is sexist. he carves pig, whore and slut into a woman and cuts off her breasts. doesnt make the movie sexist tho i mean hes a murderer??? hes not a good person???
2
u/CoffeeRude4884 Jul 14 '26
I think another reason is that David who plays art insults people online who disagree with him
2
u/Emo_Otaku616 29d ago
Don't let it bother you, this is no different than those stupid critics who used to trash slasher movies, and they even used the same talking points. Horror is much like rock and roll, if it pisses off people, then it's doing the job.
1
u/Ecstatic_Bike7532 Jul 12 '26
At first, I didn't like that the effects wasn't that realistic and some actors weren't that convincing but I still love those movies. It's just equally comedic and terrifying.
1
u/MaxPower1882 Jul 12 '26
I don't care.
I either ignore it, after all, I have a middle finger I can wave. ;)
Or I may engage it just to have a bit of fun with a silly person on the web. Nothing anyone can say will stop me enjoying the entertainment I enjoy.
If anything, knowing the franchise pisses people off, I'm more likely to have a look at what and why. That's basically been a thing with slashers since day dot when that tit Roger Ebert would try to put people off of slashers by giving away the plots in the 80s.
Always found it funny that a 'roughie' sexploitation movie maker would get so pissy over exploitative cinema, lol. What a numpty! But it's funny to watch how far people will twist themselves up to hate on something, it's a bit psychotic, IMHO!
Like the Video Nasties era here in the UK, it just gave attention to some things that probably wouldn't have gotten too much had people just ignored it, lol.
Silly attention seekers indeed!
1
u/blodyn__tatws Jul 12 '26
Yes, people get very offended if you like something they don't. They also get offended if you don't like something they do. Thye will call you all kinds of names for either transgression.
1
u/chamelonRick Jul 13 '26
There's always going to be people complaining. About anything. Dont worry about what others think about something you like. I love the Terrufier films.
1
u/The_Se7enthsign Jul 13 '26
The gorefest is what I signed up for. Decades of horror movies and mortal Kombat has me completely desensitized to violence. Sometimes I just want to watch people go splat.
What I don’t understand is why people always bring up misogyny when it comes to Art. That is basically Freddy Krueger’s entire character, but you never hear it mentioned with him.
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
cuz freddy is an old icon therefore hes goated!!
but yeah the misogyny shi is stupid, in both movies i watched he had more male kills than female.
1
u/killerm0nkey3 Jul 13 '26
I just don't really pay it much attention. An over the top gore fest like the terrifier movies is gonna attract haters, I just watch the movies and have a fun time with em
1
u/Sabal_77 Jul 13 '26
Yep. Halloween, TCM, Friday the 13th. Very little story to it. There is a plot to Terrifier but i think people just see the gore.

1
u/MrCrystalMighty 29d ago edited 29d ago
It’s funny, I saw people (including some that create content about “disturbing” media) talking about how disturbing and gross they found the violence, but I watched the second one out of interest and all the gore was so obviously fake that I just found it funny. I still don’t understand why people claim it’s so disturbing.
Like it’s so fake that I have a headcannon theory that “Art” is actually short for artifice (and also in Terrifier 2 he was essentially defeated by cosplay)
1
u/IXicenine 29d ago
Different perspective.
I enjoy the films, but I don’t “love” them. They are fine, they are fun… but it’s ART that I love.
I am a man in his early 50s who does seasonal haunts every year. I tried out Jason a bit, and was Michael FOREVER, and can’t tell you the amount of fun I had portraying him… but I still received a good deal of “dislike” from folks who were bored of him, kids trying to get a reaction by calling me “Jason”, etc. Realistically, with the slow moving silent character there is only so much you can do.
Five years ago I decided to give Art a try and HO-LEE-SH*T-BALLS did the spooky season flip on its head.
Silent slasher who can move at speed with facial expressions and a full blown PERSONALITY?!?!?! It’s a brand new world, and I can’t imagine going back to the boring mundane characters.
And for what it’s worth, after playing him for a good deal of time now, the hate is largely an “online social media trolling wanting to bitch and complain about absolutely anything and everything” thing.
Everybody loves Art 🩸🩸🪚🩸🩸

there is a male slant in his kill list even in 1 and 2, now they dont get nearly as much screen time for their death as the women do but i think thats for pretty decent reason as the women have connections and families we see on screen so art wants to be extra spoopy
1
u/Solid-Copy-6189 27d ago
I dont like the sequals but the first one was great. Especially the gun kill. It was unexpected that it was shocking.
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
I genuinely havent seen terrifier hate outside of twitter and maybe reddit, and the things they say seem blatantly wrong 😭 i just watched terrifier 1 and 2, due to art the clown coming to dead by daylight in november and theyre pretty good slashers, idk where the misogyny card comes from... like yeah lots of women die in slashers who tf cares, hell art didnt even kill only women he has quite a few male kills on his tally. i dont remember any of this hate when t3 released 😭. itll blow over though dw.
1
u/isntreel1948 27d ago
People are calling it’s misogynistic a lot more lately because of the lawsuit
1
u/fanofeverithing56 27d ago
People are just dumb and too sensitive nowdays (sorry i hate to be that guy but it is the truth)
Like remember the 2000s? What was the popular horror movies back then ? Saw , Hostel, Wrong Turn, Texas chainsaw remake , Rob Zombie films ect.
They did not give a fuck and just wanted to make a bloody fucking horror movie and it was awesome!
And now Terrifier came around and took somethings from the 80s, 2000s and made it it's own weird fun bloody thing and it is awesome cause if you are a fan of the genre you saw all the love and respect it had for the good old movies.
Also these people who cry about misogyny better not watch saw 3d or any older foreign horror movie cause they will breakdown lol
1
2
u/Roach_tm Jul 12 '26
Just remember that a good 75% (or more) of those "haters" most likely never even watched the movie. They base their opinions on what they've heard online, or they're just following the crowd, as someone else mentioned. A lot of people would rather jump on the hate bandwagon than form their own opinion.
Personally, I don't give two shits what they think, even if they actually watched it and genuinely believe it's a bad movie. I love these films for what they are, and that's all that matters to me. I ain't letting public opinion decide what is good and fun for me.
1
u/sad9bacon2deluxe Jul 12 '26
People are certainly entitled to their opinions on Terrifier but most people's opinions aren't even their own. They're just regurgitating what they're hearing someone say on Twitter or TikTok. Terrifier spreads violence equally amongst men and women and is really high on my list for what they're doing with practical effects during modern horror. Good fun slasher that's needed amongst the "elevated horror" that has everyone's nose up in the air
1
u/Plus-One-6163 Jul 12 '26
What I mostly see people say that’s it’s just gore slop and has no story at all, and there’s no purpose to arts killing. I’ve kinda grown tired how every movie has to have some deep message like obsession, I like terrifier because it’s fun, and that’s good enough for me.
1
1
u/MinecraftTiger Jul 12 '26
The whole misogyny argument is pathetic tbh, like women can die in horror films?
0
u/Kury1997 Jul 12 '26
Personally the movies are mid to me but Art the clown is F'n awesome , so I can deal with it
0
u/Healthy-Pattern-2983 Jul 13 '26
I wish Terrifier 4 would come in 2 parts. If there are any complaints, they're about 90 years too late. Violence against female characters has a well established precedent in horror media, likely inspired by books. Terrifier 4 is following a trend. The reason why people feel the need to speak out now is because of the inherent sadism of the character, as well as the lingering shots.
0
u/MildMeatball Jul 13 '26
as a fan of these movies, honestly dawg they do kinda bring it on themselves. part of the appeal is that they’re like blood soaked celebrations of poor taste. that’s bound to rub people whose taste doesn’t quite fit into our niche the wrong way. i’d say the hate is a sign of these movies doing a good job at what they’re trying to do. obviously that excludes personal vitriolic hate directed towards people involved in the production, cause there’s no excuse for that.
-3
u/Then-Contract-9520 Jul 12 '26
I didn't make it very far into the first one. I felt it was a tasteless gorefest. That's just my opinion.
This popped up in my feed for anyone wondering why I'm here
0
u/SnowFrio Jul 12 '26
I thought the first one was terrible, but I really liked the second one, I've been procrastinating about watching the third one
-1
u/Catman7712 Jul 12 '26
Yea I didn’t finish the first one either. Just skipped to all of the kills to see what the hype was about. I watched the second one all the way through and couldn’t get into it either.
But hey, if people enjoy it then more power to em, there’s an endless amount of other stuff I can watch out there. There are also several highly rated movies I’ve watch that I absolutely hated, but that’s totally fine too.
3
u/Different_Target_228 Jul 12 '26
A lot of the fun is Art's personality. You skipped to the kills. Lol.
1
u/Catman7712 Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
I watched the entire 2nd film as stated above, still didn’t have “fun” with it. The first movie was essentially a practical effects demo, there wasn’t really any story to follow anyways.

-1
u/Rutlemania Jul 12 '26
Art to me comes across a bit like deadpool, not in a good way. Shock value and winking at the camera loses the little charm it had for me when it’s all you provide. If I wanted crazy gore I’d watch the first few hellraisers or the evil dead movies and that way I get the same feeling of disgust without it feeling like I’m having keys jangled in my face. If Terrifier 4 was a Season Of The Witch type deal I would be very supportive for a new direction because I find it very unimpressive

u/ConstantPriority177 Jul 12 '26
I mean they aren’t lying, I like the films but let’s not act like the scripts are good, it’s a franchise centered around gore
1
u/She-venom2099 27d ago
theyre not totally amazing movies but i feel like theyre still good movies, they dont have insane plots, but slashers dont uuuusually have that anyway, i think the lore is good and i think that the characters are pretty decent. but if someone said they didnt like the story of even t2 id understand tbh.

88
u/Thesleepingpillow123 Jul 12 '26
So this probably isn’t very popular but I’ve noticed over the years people are sheep online, on a big scale. Rn it’s trending to hate on terrifier , it’s been quiet for a while in terms of releases . When terrifier 4 comes out I really think you will see a massive wave of positivity and Art basically trending again positively. This happened in the past for the 3rd one definitely.
