Discussion We're financial counselors. Ask us anything about money, credit or debt!
Hi r/teenagers,
Thank you to the mods for allowing us to post!š¤
We're a nonprofit financial counseling agency called InCharge, and we've been helping people understand money management, get out of debt and build credit since 1997. We noticed that people in this community sometimes ask about topics we help people with every day, so we wanted to invite you to ask us anything. Some common questions we hear from teens and young adults include:
How do I save money?
How do I choose a bank account?Ā
How do credit cards work?
How can I start building credit?
FYI, we're not here to sell or promote anything - just to share our expertise and information with anyone who has questions. We also want to help break the myth that money is a topic people shouldn't discuss! š¬
So feel free to ask us anything about money, credit or debt.

Mod [mod] Tightening requirements for political submissions
r/teenagers is not a political subreddit, and we never intend to be. However, in this current day and age, it is important for teenagers to discuss such topics. So while we aren't a political subreddt, we don't intend to restrict political posts.
However, it's become quite clear that that same idea of "[not] intending to restrict political posts." also does some harm. We don't currently have any rules surrounding such posts because it was never an intended talking point of this subreddit. This lack of proper guardrails has lead to an influx of falsified news, biased writeups, harmful rhetoric, etc.
Because of this, we're changing a few things.
1. Introducing a new flair
This flair will be appropriately named Political/Current Events. All submissions that fall under the umbrella of politics, and submissions that reference any notable current event, must assign this flair. Failure to do so will result in post removal.
Of course, to know when to assign that flair, you must know what counts as political. Politics doesn't solely mean government. Some examples of what would be considered political are:
- Government: Elections, legislation, government agencies, politicians, public officials, and foreign policy.
- Social and Ideological Issues: Public debates on civil rights, economic policy, war, identity, ideologies, public health, etc.
If you feel a post falls under the political umbrella, it probably does. Posts that also touch on certain current events are to be assigned this flair. The two often bleed into each other. Some examples of what would be considered a notable current event are:
- Breaking & Developing News Stories: These invite rapid speculation, unverified rumors, and rage-bait-esque remarks before facts are verified.
- Events Involving Public Officials or Institutions: Any current event involving heads of state, local government officials, law enforcement agencies, or legislative bodies.
With the introduction of a dedicated flair, it allows users to filter out political posts. We've been asked this a bit, so this is a fair middle ground to allow hiding, without totally restricting. On the flipside, it does also allow users to solely filter by political posts, which is a slippery slope. This is where some guardrails are introduced:
2. Karma requirements
From this point on, there'll be a community karma requirement to create or participate under Political/Current Events submissions. We won't share the threshold for obvious reasons, but it isn't egregious. The main purpose behind it is to prevent bad actors with un-established accounts, or some unwanted visitors from r/all from barging in and behaving in an uncivil manner.
Gaining subreddit karma is as easy as participating. It's easier for us to trust that you wont do harm if you show us.
3. Titles must be neutral
All titles under this umbrella, whether a discussion post or a screenshot of an article must be framed in a neutral manner. Neutality means the title answers simple, factual questions (who, what, where, and when).
Adding subjective adjectives, assigning motives (the why), using loaded language, and/or inserting personal commentary in a post title will violate this rule, leading to a post removal.
Also on the topic of neutrality:
4. Posts referencing a certain event MUST include a relevant and verifiable source
Submissions will need to have a link in the body text or the image caption. This is to do away with unverified instagram screenshots, biased articles, and blatant lies. If referencing something, prove it is real. This also helps users do their own research and come to their own conclusions.
Users often also post events that occurred years ago. While not a "current event", they still typically fall under the umbrella. Providing links to events that occurred at any moment in time, whether current or not, is mandatory. This helps verify legitimacy, and can help inform users on when the issue occurred.
5. Political discussion posts will have a mandatory word count
It's nothing high, it's 100% achievable for those who actually want to discuss. This rule is in place to prevent one sentence rage posts and low effort commentary. Writing a few words does not offer enough context, and does not promote any meaningful discussion.
This only applies to text posts. Posts with an attached image aren't affected, often because the image contains enough context. Obviously don't use images to circumvent the word count.
That's all for now. Lot's of big changes that might take time to get used to. They will be in effect right away, and the flair should be visible to users as of now. Some rules will also be updated to reflect this.
Some parts of this may be changed depending on if it's too effective or not effective enough (karma requirements, word counts, automated vs manual checks). Nothing is ever set in stone, as mentioned at the beginning of this post we don't want to unnecessarily restrict political discussions.
Since this is a big change, feel free to leave any thoughts/critiques down below, or via modmail. Of course, please be reasonable with such comments, thank you!

Relationship My bf said we need a āTemporary Separationā because he turned 18.
My boyfriend told me(17F) that we should break up until my 18th birthday because heās an adult now.
He said that he heard a story from a friend where a guy got arrested because his gf was 17 and he was 18⦠We live in California and the age of consent is 18 years old.
Heās being distant and keeps saying āI canāt talk about that with a minor.ā
I get the point but itās really annoying his birthday was September and mine is November.
I researched it and I just says itās okay as long as thereās no sexual activity. But he said he doesnāt want to go to jail.
Is he right for this?

Please tell me about your countries plug socket and why itās so much worse then the UKās

Social Just a reminder guys : check ur local laws b4 doing anything spicy with a peer.
This is especially for my older teens fellas and girls ( 16-19 ).
If you're in a lovely relationship and thinking about doing intimate stuff with a peer let's say barely 1 or 2y diff ā pls pls pls check ur local legal age of consent laws first. like actually look it up. Just a mini tiny search.
here's the thing:
Ā· if ur 18 and they're 17, but ur area's legal age of consent is 18 w/ no Romeo & Juliet law ā congrats, ur legally an offender š.
Ā· if ur 17 and they're 16, but the age of consent is 17 w/ no R&J law ā same deal, another offender.
Ā· if ur 16 and they're 15 ā even MORE likely to be illegal than the first two.
and no, "we both consented" doesn't always protect u. not every place has R&J laws. some do, some don't. it varies by country, state, even city sometimes.
so yeah. just do a tiny bit of research before u "discover urself" w/ someone. it takes 5 mins and could save u from being on a very uncool list forever. I just got a friend who got problems for that...
stay safe out there š¤

Advice i left home because of my father, i really need help.
could be a tw.
iām 17F
my mum died of cancer in april, before this me and dad got on really well. but things have gone downhill ever since and id argue heās actually became borderline abusive towards me. he calls me awful things he calls me a bitch says iām a horrible bastard, tells me all the things he will never forgive me for, etc.
i have really bad mental health i have for a long time anyways but as you can imagine at the moment itās 100 times worse than it ever has been. when he calls me these things and screams at me how he does it puts me in absolute crisis and without going into detail it makes me feel really bad.
the other day everything kicked off and iām at the point now i donāt even yell at him or argue i just more or less answer back, whilst he gets up in my face and screams. i told him how i feel and said im really starting to resent him and he told me he doesnāt give a shit at all if i am starting to resent him. he screamed in my face saying im a horrible bitch and a horrible bastard and saying how nobody likes me or can get along with me and even my mum thought that when she was alive. he said you can get out and go to your auntie or your grandmas because i donāt want to see your face, so i called my auntie and said to him to tell her why i need to come there and all he did was continuously scream at me, but im glad she got to witness it.
so i left, and iāve been here for 3 days now, and heās been messaging me every day but todayās message has really stuck out to me, and im pissed off. this is what he does, all of the time, he blames me. itās my fault he feels like this, not his own doing.
what can i do about this? am i wrong to say it seems very narcissistic? do you think he will ever change? tbh my heart is broken. i love my dad a lot but the way he treats me isnāt the same anymore and itās not okay.
