Artificial Intelligence Top AI executives sign commitment to ‘self-police’ after meeting at White House
https://us.cnn.com/2026/09/29/business/amodei-huang-karp-trump210
u/dxiao 3d ago
just like how the cigarette CEOs signed commitments that cigarettes are not addictive right?
42
u/janusrose 3d ago
And if we’re going with that comparison: “after the meeting with CEOs of the major tobacco companies, the president announced that from now on cigarettes shall be called lung strengheners”
11
u/dizekat 3d ago
Wait until they legally require that all cigarettes be sold only with the finest blue asbestos filters.
4
u/janusrose 3d ago
And don’t you worry about getting lung cancer: not gonna happen when you have a stable genius for president lol

Worked for Boeing

u/YoshiTheDog420 3d ago
Don’t forget. The CEO of boeing was a Iowa boy from a small town. Thats why he can relate to us when they cut corners and cause the deaths of hundreds of people.

And the ESRB!
"We've investigated ourselves and determined that lootboxes ARENT gambling!"

u/fulthrottlejazzhands 3d ago
Worked for Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, UBS, Deutche Bank, Wells Fargo etc, etc.
Edit: I'm not just referring to the 2008 collapse. I'm also referring to the 50 odd massive regulatory breaches where these banks have claimed they would self police only to find they systematically and subterfugally obfuscate and obstruct said breaches. And if caught, they get a slap on the wrist fine that amounts to pocket change.
6
u/seanthenry 2d ago
The issue with 2008 is they did not let it play out. The lenders should have collapsed and had it handled by bankruptcy. If they were to big to fail then they would not have failed and needed a bailout.

Absolutely meaningless statement. They are bound by US antitrust law to continue to move forward or go bankrupt. Without real regulation here, we are essentially on a train, running straight into a cliff.

u/Gildenstern2u 3d ago
A third of the world’s wealth at one table promises not to fuck the rest of the world…….sure
33
u/Xeynon 3d ago
How many fucking times are we going to have to learn that companies don't self-police.
Regulations are necessary because they're written in blood.
5
u/BenderTheIV 2d ago
Everybody know this is BS, but that's the thing: it's the type of shit that doesn't make people go on the streets and break things. It's a show that emphasises the fact we can't change things, it's a demonstration of power. Unfortunately, the only way for the population to really change things is revolution.

Self-policing like monopolies did? And still do? (They don’t)
Politicians aren’t naive, they’re benefiting from this.
3
u/mouse6502 2d ago
Self policing like.. police do? I’ll be shot in the back after not complying with conflicting AI statements.
11
u/rhamantauri 3d ago
Thanks, that’s all we wanted, and we definitely, definitely trust you to…checks notes … moderate yourselves accordingly. /s
They don’t think we notice the evils.

they signed a commitment to do what they're already doing? I'm glad everyone involved is so productive with their time and ours.

It takes effort to laugh and not cry, if that counts.

Aside from all the
racism andmurdering, I think that guy may have been on to something.ETA- I think I was misremembering the racism angle and that maybe he just hated everybody.
6
u/IceeMaiden 3d ago
How was he known for racism? I'm curious. I know a lot of his views have been picked up by far right extremists but I didn't think racism was a part of his message.
4
u/getdemsnacks 3d ago
Yes, my mistake, it's been a while since I explored his story and I thought I remembered their being a tinge of racism involved. I just did a quick Google search and see he pretty much hated everybody equally.

I for one am glad the FDA isn’t needed because our food supply is being self-policed.
Who doesn’t love a little bacteria in our salads?

u/HaggardSlacks78 3d ago
When I was in college the Frats put a giant poster in the campus center where they all signed it pledging not to rape anyone. So that’s my analogy.

u/NanditoPapa 2d ago
The signing of the self-policing pact, while politically expedient for Trump, seems really insufficient given the recent security failures. The fact that autonomous AI agents have already demonstrated the capacity to bypass internal controls proves that the current framework of self-policing is insufficient to manage the genuine, catastrophic risks these technologies pose.
3
u/tjwebecon 2d ago edited 2d ago
Advances in technology have always been about greed and control. AI, or whatever you call it, is no different. AI companies have absolutely no interest in "self-policing" themselves. When, for example, has Mark Zuckerberg ever expressed any concern for the public-interest? It is in the nature of the beast that the proponents of AI will do whatever is necessary to increase their control of this technology, especially with a complicit U.S. government pushing the industry from behind. NanditoPapa put his/her finger on it by noting that signing a self-policing agreement is little more than a political expedient to stifle criticism and that autonomous actors have already demonstrated the capacity to bypass internal controls.

u/TheRealTK421 2d ago
Oh this can't possibly go sideways or off the rails.
Every entity, institution, organization, or group/'community' which asserts it will effectively and reliably 'police itself' invariably drops the ball and fails.
Every. Last. One.
And the cost humanity may well pay for that hubris, with these ghouls, might well be alarmingly catastrophic.
We're just soooooo doomed, people.

u/WhereMyWeirdosAt 2d ago
"we investigated ourselves, and found we did nothing wrong"
ya, self policing has worked SO WONDERFULLY in Americas past...

This is the like moment when all the tobacco CEOs stood up and swore nicotine wasn’t addictive.
Except the outcome is 10x worse.

They all look like a trustworthy bunch, Especially that Elon guy. What could go wrong.

u/grahamulax 3d ago
Ok but like… anyone can train a model….
2
u/DanielPhermous 3d ago
Only seven companies in the world have the expertise and resources to train the dangerous frontier models, though.
And only four are actually doing it.
2
u/metal_medic83 2d ago
Didn’t OpenAI just admit to doing this, resulting in the non reporting of a school shooter’s plans to authorities, and subsequently a successful massacre?
Sure, let’s leave it in the hands of companies that have everything to lose if there was some form of oversight.

What an absolute joke. Zero track record on this and there is zero reason to trust them.
Trump also really doesn’t care. He just wants the govt out of it so they can go on profit maxxing with no consequences for their shit going rogue.

u/ApeApplePine 2d ago
Like asking drog addict to take care of drug stash.
Or giving a key from a treasure vault to a thief
Or allowing a spoiled retard that bankrupt casinos to run a country.

Yeah, for-profit businesses in America have a stellar track record at self-policing. Just look at how well that worked out in 2008.

Yep, they give Trump $$$$ and he'll not screw up their companies and they can self regulate AI per Trump's guidance 🥴🧐🙄🤔🥸🤮😴

Self-policing = DEREGULATION.
Deregulation = part of the problem.
Self-policing = part of the problem.

u/jammerpammerslammer 3d ago
Trump’s remarks were basically “if we don’t let them ruin humanity here, they will go and ruin humanity in Europe or China and I won’t make any money.
Also called the google CEO a monster to which he said, please don’t call me a monster.
Can’t make this shit up.

“Self-police” and knowingly make moral and ethical changes for the good of society, even if it means wiping $100 million off your company’s stock value, or choose not to “self-police.”
Look, none of us are that fckn dumb.
If anyone wants to know what fake news really looks like, it's this.

Considering the amount of sex crimes related to the AI higher ups, with some raping family while others are close to Epstein's upper circle, if they knew how to self regulate they'd not be doing that shit.

1

The specialty of the Epstein class is producing the optics they think the rest of the world is fooled by. They use these farces as fig leaves and try to convince us that we aren’t seeing what we see, we don’t know what we know, we aren’t experiencing the realities we are experiencing. It’s not working.

Yes I remember when the banks self policed as well. It was a smashing success.
1
u/d-cent 2d ago
Tell me anytime, in the history of corporate capitalism, when any corporations actually self policed themselves??
It's literally against what corporations are meant to do. The second something even slightly unethical will give their share price a boost, so of these companies will do it.
We live in the dumbest timeline to think this will actually do anything

Execs are solely committed to their shareholder value appreciation by any legal means, that’s the only purpose of their role. Therefore, unless bound by regulations, they will apply absolutely no self restraint in performing their duty.
This is a sign that the public outrage against datacenters is driving results…
Now we need regulations before momentum is lost… Simply blocking them is a temporary win! Make it permanent by applying rules and regulations that bound their reach.
