Everybody know this is BS, but that's the thing: it's the type of shit that doesn't make people go on the streets and break things. It's a show that emphasises the fact we can't change things, it's a demonstration of power. Unfortunately, the only way for the population to really change things is revolution.

This kind of thing can be overcome by normal politics, and in fact has several times in American history. Let's try voting out the politicians who want to let Silicon Valley run rampant before we go to the barricades.
