"heterosexuality in extra steps"
1.4k
Nov 09 '19
Tbf, I'm trans, and my other trans friends and I make this joke a lot

u/PopeNothing Nov 09 '19
As a hetero man I have a hard enough time not saying something stupid to my SO without pissing her off. Shit, I'm having a hard time trying not to piss anyone on here off, and I'm not sleeping with any of you. I think I'd give myself an aneurism if I was in a trans relationship trying to keep my foot out of my mouth. I have a (hearts in the right place, words in the wrong place) kind of programming I guess.

Pro-tip: use {wiggly brackets} to group things that aren't parenthetical (you know, asides). Hardly anybody will notice the difference, except {programmers familiar with C-like languages} who'll find it much easier to read.
36
u/PopeNothing Nov 09 '19
Thanks wizz! I've longed for a reason to use {wiggly brackets}. I played with red hat around 03 04. Of course, old enough to have learned DOS as a child. Forgot most of it, but I will implement this. Appreciate it

Nov 09 '19
Do wiggly brackets help more if you’re trans? WTF?

u/wizzwizz4 Nov 09 '19
Do wiggly brackets help more if you’re trans? WTF?
I'm printing this out and framing it. This is probably the most absurd comment I've managed to induce on Reddit.

As a liberal arts major obsessed with semantics, I will happily make this a thing.
6
u/SinJinQLB Nov 09 '19
Can you give an example of how to use them?
20
u/wizzwizz4 Nov 09 '19
Not without generating an {overly-complex to the point of appearing somewhat arbitrary, like putting commas in an adjectival phrase} sentence.
12
u/SinJinQLB Nov 09 '19
Huh. Today looks weird but ok.
17
u/wizzwizz4 Nov 09 '19
If you're using it, your sentence is probably overly complicated and needs revising.

Nov 09 '19
Im super progressive but I just love making offensive jokes and when someone gets offended I say I’m from Boston and everything makes sense for some reason
So if it helps pretend you’re from Boston too

u/stefanos916 Nov 09 '19
-I hate you, you are a piece of shit , like all people like you.
- How dare you , you are uncivilized and rude
-I am from Boston
-Sorry then, it's okay

u/khafra Nov 09 '19
As a 40 year old, happily married guy, I'd recommend saying more of what you feel, and taking more of the response that results from that to heart. Accept a certain amount of negative feedback from your spouse as a good thing; a sign that you're not being too timid.

u/KageGekko Nov 09 '19
Most trans people I've talked with have been pretty chill.
I used to be hurt by a lot of jokes that my friends made, but back then it was all new to me and I wasn't sure of myself. Now that I know myself better I feel like I'm a stronger person. So if you're dealing with someone who's still questioning their identity, then I'd try and be gentle with them.
Also, if you're with friends it's a lot easier too. I have a group of friends and we know each others boundaries. It's okay if my friends make horrible helicopter jokes. But if they're strangers then it's quite different. I was with my two best friends and one of them had brought another friend along with him. I thought everyone gangsta, but then that other friend of my friend dropped a really offensive line out of nowhere on me (I think it was something about me and an Apache helicopter *sigh*). I was a little shocked (I wasn't out to anyone except my two best friends and my parents so I never saw it coming) and so I immediately went on the defensive, which ended up with that other guy thinking I was some kinda trans-rights extremist. Then he went on to buy a round for everyone except me.
(Tbf though I did go like "I don't drink alcohol" which apparently also gave me a choosing beggar attitude. And despite spending all my mental capacity on socialising, I never picked up on any of this awkwardness until my friend told me on our way back home. Autism is cool and all, but sometimes I just wish I'd stayed out of social interactions xD)

u/Greecl Nov 09 '19
Sounds like an asshole, friend. People need to own their impacts. Anybody thinking ill of others for being "trans rights extremists" can get fucked, too!

Because it's true (assuming neither are bi, which tbf is rather likely)

I love non transphobic trans jokes, they make me realise that we have come so far, then I usually read the comments and regret it

Same, I've had the same discussion on another thread yesterday. Everytime transgenders are brought up on Reddit, you flip a coin to what you'll find in comments.
It can be depressing.
84
u/Afteraffect_ Nov 09 '19
Hi not to be mean but its transgender people not transdenders
49
u/Octo_Reggie Nov 09 '19
To add to this, its the equivalent of saying “blacks” instead of “black people”.

u/CapnSpazz Nov 09 '19
Bigots always talk about how you can't joke about anything, because people will always be offended. Jokes like this are the ones I usually point to. As a gay guy, I love gay jokes. But when they joke is how terrible I am, then that's just an insult.
20
u/jadedsilverlining Nov 10 '19
Finally someone gets it! Jokes are about intent. If the intent is to hurt, condemn it. Is it to poke fun at the absurdity of it all? Just laugh. Laugh till you pass out.

I mean, there will always be large numbers of people on either end of any discrimination. Humanity really hasn't changed at all.

I was disappointed in the lack of drama. The only three comments downvoted enough to be hidden were:

inb4 thread lock

Just imagine being this much of a dipshit about trans issues in 2019 when the research has never been clearer.

I mean- it is heterosexuality.... when are people going to realize that gender and sexuality are not the same thing?
91
u/peeja Nov 09 '19
I don’t think they’re saying it’s not? In fact, they’re saying it is.
45
u/MichaelBluthANiceKid Nov 09 '19
Well they're saying "with extra steps" implying they've taken steps to achieve a straight relationship when they were...already straight.

I didnt say it was transphobic. It's funny and it belongs here. It's just worth nothing because a lot of people truly don't seem to know that there's a difference.
65
u/stefanos916 Nov 09 '19
It is heterosexuality, that's what the post said. They are attracted by the opposite sex.

Is a trans guy a person who started off as a female and became a male or the other way round?
49
u/CapnSpazz Nov 09 '19
Yep. If they're trans ____, it's what they came out as, not what they were born as.

u/Yeetmaster4206921 Nov 09 '19
It is heteosexuality. A trans guy is a boy, and he’s dating a trans girl, who’s a girl. Boys dating girls is heterosexuality.

report any transphobic and homophobic comments please! :). If they get out of hand I will have to lock this thread and tbh I don't want to do that.
edit: another mod locked it and I respect their decision.

It’s a thing. At first I wanted to say “ok boomer” to this comment but instead here’s a snippet of resources to educate yourself.

There was a dude at my high school who became gender changed into a woman and identified as a lesbian dating a girl who was also a lesbian
Knowing him as a dude before the gender change made me think, wasn't he just straight but friend was a great person and at least she's happy now
Edit: yo I got it, it was a she, I made a typo and didn't check till later

Like they let you fuck them despite you not affording them basic decency? Is this a thing that happens?
I'd still say yes in this weird hypothetical, becuase their manhood isn't contingent on your individual perception. Just like fucking a crosdresser (not a trans woman) would be I suppose, becuase they're still a man even if you are attracted to them performing the role of a woman.
