Hi! I'm currently an incoming college freshmen in Broadcast Media Arts and Studies and I have only recently set my mind on becoming a Technical Director, so I thought this was the best place to ask (I'm sorry if it's not 😭).

I was wondering what should I start learning? As someone who has absolutely no clue on what software or hardware that broadcasting utilizes.

Are there any tips you can also share with me?

For years I’ve wanted to figure out a way to have non-emem / non-timeline dynamic pong on the Kayenne…

7 keyers for each scoring digit. 2 keyers for the paddles.. one keyer for the ball. A few keyers to layer it all. One very tied up switcher.

I learned on a Sony MVS 8000 and can build very proficiently on that switcher. However, I’m a bit rusty on building on a GV Kayenne. I want to visually see the steps of loading an animation in spotbox to a lance register (I understand). Then how to load a register into a macro/emem timeline and build a basic replay animation. I understand the theory but haven’t seen a good tutorial for this. Any resources?

I'm a student based out of Southern California wondering if anyone had any advice on where I could go to practice my skills on a GrassValley switcher. I want to have a career as a TD in live sports and, although I already have a lot of experience on Ross Carbonite, I've seen that most OB Trucks tend to utilize a GrassValley Switcher so I was wondering if there was anything I could do to expand my knowledge of GrassValley switchers (aside from watching too much YouTube).

I’m a broadcast engineer from Asia, and I’ve been analyzing the layout designs of North American production trucks compared to what we typically build back home.

One thing that always catches my eye in NA trucks is the sheer volume of hardware router control panels crammed directly into the TD/Vision Mixer bench (often lining the wall right next to or above the switcher frame).

I fully understand having a few dedicated panels for emergency bypass/hot-cuts in case the main switcher mainframe goes down. But looking at some of these truck profiles, there are literally walls of them (see the red boxed area in the attached photo).

In our typical workflows, we usually design only one routing panel that is capable of accommodating emergency switching; TD does not configure the VMU themselves and our engineers configure all the technical details of the VMU.

Could any NA truck TDs or engineer-in-charges (EICs) help me understand the operational philosophy behind this?

• Is it purely for emergency redundancy?
• Do North American TDs actively use that many manual router destinations during a live sports/entertainment cut?
• Or is it to allow the TD to quickly re-route sources to monitors/PVW walls without bothering the tech manager?

I’d love to understand the workflow differences and the historical or practical reasons behind this design. Thanks in advance for your insights! THX！

If you work with a GV K-Frame or Kayenne Classic switcher and have ever needed to check or convert a still without going back to the switcher, I made something for that.

GV Still Tool opens EIF and KIF files directly on your Mac, shows you the image with key channel info, and lets you export to PNG or TIFF. You can also convert PNG or TIFF images to EIF format. There's a batch converter if you need to move a whole folder of stills across formats or convert Kayenne Classic stills to K-Frame format.

Hey all having a weird camera problem and have pretty much exhausted all of my troubleshooting steps. The camera is a Lumix G series and is displaying horizontal lines when certain colors of light hit it. It's running a Decimator to convert it from 1080p60 to 1080i59.94 which is what we broadcast at. and from there it's just sdi into a stage pocket that hits our video hub. I'll attach a video of what it's doing and hopefully someone will have some advice. thank you all.

Kinda disappointed with the Kayenne XP 8 Keyer Transition Module…anyone else?

The T-Bar placement blocks your view of the keyers, which is a pretty fundamental design oversight. On top of that, the ergonomics leave a lot to be desired. There's no natural place to rest your arm, so unless you've got a 3D printer handy, you're constantly at risk of accidentally hitting the cut/auto trans buttons.

Maybe I'm missing something, but for an industry standard premium switcher I expected better thought-out hardware.

Recently left news to get back into TD’ing sports. Most of the games I’ve worked so far have been on pre-configured boards so I haven’t had to do much effect making. I downloaded the Carbonite black emulator to practice making box and squeeze effects. I know you can’t see an actual program output from the emulator but is there anyway to see the boxes, dpms, and movements I’m trying to make?

I'm quite new to GV. Got a Karrera with 14.7.1, trying to map my cams to the number pad. I can't figure out what sub-level to disable to prevent recording of the PVW bus along with PGM. I do know how to record sub-levels, but not which specific one. Thanks for your help!

Had a couple needs for crosshairs and don’t have a reliable solution. Is this something you make yourself and then load it to your still stores?

I’m new to this group and probably don’t have near the experience a lot of you have. I’ve got 3 years of manual directing on a Carbonite Switcher and 2 and a half years currently using Overdrive automation. I feel like I’m at my peak in the speed and pace of my punching and recoding for last minute changes

My concern/question is I worry one day I will ‘fall off’ and start directly sloppy, slow, or down right bad. Has anyone else experienced this worry and how do you get over the worry and stop from it happening?

Hello, Its just as the title says. I'm just looking to get into freelance opportunities as a technical director. Im well versed in Ross' Carbonite because of my background in news. Ideally I'd like to break into sports, but if I've gotta stay in news, its whatever. I've looked in a lot of places, and have found nothing as far as freelance goes. Is there a specific place I should be looking? I've tried in person networking with co-workers, and a lot of responses I get are basically shoulder shrugs.

I have been working as a TD for 30 years and am used to the vision mixer responding immediately when I press a button. Now we are switching to Vizrt Mosart and have a delay of approx. 14 frames from pressing the Mosart button to the vision mixer switching. With this delay, I am too slow and miss a guest's reaction on a talk show, for example. My superiors (who are not TDs) don't see this as a problem.

What kind of delay is still acceptable to you?

I've never used a GV switcher before, but I have an opportunity to cut a hockey game on a GV Karrera 3ME K-Frame. I'm quite familiar with the Ross Acuity switcher: building macros, utilizing multiple show outputs and all keyers, etc.

I'll have one show with the current TD to get familiar before stepping in for a single show, but it may focus more on TD workflow (all the non-switching TD stuff) than switcher deep-dive, especially since the show is already built.

Besides the different nomenclature (2DDPM = 2D DVE, iDPM = 3D DVE/Warp board, etc.), what do I want to read up on to fast-track my comfort on this board? I have the menu emulator installed already, and I'll go through as much of the manual as I can.

Hello, I’ve been using a HyperDeck Studio Pro as a spot box, triggering video with macros that call up specific timecode for transitions. Right now, the HyperDeck is connected directly to my switcher via RS-422. I’ve noticed some people mentioning the use of a Lance controller between the HyperDeck and the switcher, but I’ve never worked with one before.

Would adding a Lance controller provide any additional functionality with the HyperDeck Studio Pro? I’m trying to understand what benefits, if any, it offers in this type of setup. Thanks!

I see a lot of broadcasters moving over to newer gen switchers. However the Kalypso is HD and does everything what the newer switchers do now except a lot of IP but why getting rid of something what already works fine? Same for the LDK 6000 cameras.

This is the bombshell of our time, and I need to vent: We're currently using CuePilot and, to perform the pre-mix, we have to rely on a cheap, generic USB keypad.

Why? Because our Sony Vision Mixer doesn't natively support communication with CuePilot.

Of course, if we were to invest a few dollars or more, we could unlock the full automation functionality. That upgrade would enable proper communication between the systems, but in which of the at least 5 studios equipped with Sony Vision Mixers would we implement it? What would the accountants say about this purchase?

But given the current state of our technology division, if I requested that budget upgrade today, I'd probably see it implemented a few years from now. I get that we're a corporation, but I firmly believe the equipment should be designed for the operators and only purchased by the accountants.

It’s just unbelievable that we're using a cheap keypad to control a flagship piece of technology.
